Mayweather Looking Forward To September

This week saw his first sit down with the media since the Manny Pacquiao fight and Floyd Mayweather Jr has insisted that he is looking forward to his penciled in September 12th date – the final fight of his contract with broadcaster Showtime and 49th pro outing in all – however the future Hall of Famer confirmed via fighthubtv that finding and announcing an opponent is sure to take some time.

Not the news Britain’s Amir Khan wanted to hear, I’m sure!

Mayweather, who it’s widely expected will indeed box on to reach that record-breaking 50-0, mastered the art of self-promotion a long time ago.

Already delivering his sales pitch regarding the fight date, he said;

“I’ll look forward to fighting in September. Hopefully we’ll get a solid competitor. I’m pretty sure we will have a solid competitor – everything takes time. We’ll see.”

It’s pretty apparent Floyd doesn’t want any part of Gennady Golovkin, with the middleweight knockout artist – by Floyd’s own admission – a jump too far in terms of weight – though the Kazakh has insisted he would come down to 154 lb for the fight.

It would also seem a Miguel Cotto rematch is out of the question with the Puerto Rican expected to face Mexican starlet Canelo Alvarez around the same time.

After half jokingly suggesting Andre Berto, it seems there are few options left for Mayweather that will do big the big PPV numbers he so loves.

Obviously Amir Khan is desperate for the call and IBF 147 lb champ Kell Brook is still in the frame despite him being rumoured to be fighting Brandon Rios – also around the same time.

Obviously you have guys like Keith Thurman or Tim Bradley as possibilities too – and everyone has their own individual preferences as to who Floyd should fight next.

Is it possible he would ever fight “Little Bro” or Porter himself?

The Pacquiao rematch is even mooted to be on the horizon for next year and fight 50.

The truth is – nobody knows yet what the next move will be – not even the man himself.

Asked for a hint, Floyd said;

“We don’t know yet. We have to take time but we’ll see.”

The world awaits the announcement.
