Matthysse weighed 163 lbs for Dallas Jr. fight

By Bill Phanco: WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (33-2, 31 KO’s) reportedly rehydrated up to 163 pounds for his 1st round knockout win over Mike Dallas Jr. (19-3-1, 8 KO’s) last Saturday night at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Matthysse easily beat the over-matched Dallas Jr. by taking advantage of his aggressiveness to knock him out cold late in the 1st round.

What’s interesting about the fight is the reported weigh that Matthysse came in for the bout. After making weight the day before on Friday with a weigh-in weight of 138.5, Matthysse put on 25 pounds after rehydrating to get to 163 for the fight. The funny thing is Matthysse really didn’t look that much bigger than he did for the weigh-in.

It wasn’t like with former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who looked positively sickly and skeletal when he weighs in for his fights. Matthysse didn’t look drained at all. He wasn’t thin, his face drawn, he didn’t have circles under his eyes and he didn’t look emaciated like a lot of fighters are when they have to take off massive amounts of water weight to fight.

If Matthysse really did come into the fight after putting on that much weight then it really gave him a huge advantage over Dallas Jr. because Matthysse looked really powerful with his shot he threw. He looked stronger than in his previous fight with Ajose Olusegun.

Putting on that kind of weight suggests that Matthysse isn’t long for the light welterweight division. If he’s going to be hydrating up to super middleweight, then he needs to at leave consider moving up to welterweight [147], so that he’s not putting such a huge strain on his body to take off and then put back on that kind of water weight. That’s just too much weight to be shedding if the weight is correct.
