Little known Krzystof Glowacki pulled off a stunning upset in New Jersey last night, knocking out long reigning WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck in the 11th round of a thoroughly entertaining scrap, sending the large Polish contingent in attendance at the Prudential Center absolutely wild.
Glowacki was flat on his back in the 6th after a solid left hook, and after rising to his feet looked as if he might get waved off, but he showed a lion hearted grit and determination to take the fight back to the German based champion, ably weathering the crisis.
Huck had been hoping to make history by achieving the most Cruiserweight title defences in the divisions history, though after disaster struck in the 11th, he now will remain tied at 13 with Sheffield’s former 200lb boss Johnny Nelson.
To make matters worse, heavy betting favourite Huck, who had boxed only once away from home previously, and was fighting for the first time in a year since leaving long-time promoters Sauerland, was ahead on the cards at the time of the knockout.
“Huck had pulled ahead and he is a beastly strong guy but this Glowacki did not stop coming,” said Lou DiBella, Huck’s American promoter afterwards. “He was like the Undertaker. He was dead on the canvas and got up and went and got Huck. That was a great fight.
“It was a Huck performance until that last shot. That was great TV. This is the entertainment business and that was entertainment.”
Huck was also without long time trainer Ulli Wegner, whom he also split from, and was working with American trainer Don House for the very first time.
After the fight his former promoters, Kalle and Nisse Sauerland sympathetically tweeted;
“Just simply feel sorry for @MarcoHuck – 1 year out, boxing on enemy territory on the undercard and now this……. wrong people, wrong trainer.”
A painful way to learn that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence….
