Latest Prizefighter tournament line-up complete: James Toney enjoys star status

IMG_47921Fight fans can expect an interesting, hopefully exciting, latest instalment of the popular “Prizefighter” tournament on November 14th. Set to go out, as usual, live on Sky Sports, the latest tournament is another international heavyweights edition, with a Team USA Vs. Team UK element added for further intrigue.

The full eight-man line-up has been confirmed by Matchroom Sports as follows:

James Toney (USA)
Jason Gavern (USA)
Brian Minto (USA)
Damian “Bolo” Wills (USA) – (stepping in for Sherman “Tank” Williams, who pulled out for some reason)

Larry Olubamiwo (UK)
Michael Sprott (UK) – (stepping in for an injured Sam Sexton)
Matt Legg (UK)
Tom Little (UK)

Former multi-weight world ruler Toney is the obvious big name of the tournament, but fans can’t be sure whether or not a 45-year-old version of “Lights Out” will be able to roll back the years and outclass his rivals. Toney, who will be a guest on tonight’s Ringside show on Sky Sports, says he will win the tournament and use the victory to propel himself into yet another world title shot; this one at heavyweight.

In terms of the UK team, the ultra-experienced Sprott looks to have a decent shot at winning the trophy. Sprott has fought in two previous instalments of Prizefighter: winning the trophy in 2010 and falling at the quarter-final stage in 2011. As with Toney, a lot will depend on how much Sprott has left in the tank.

Minto looks another good bet as far as the eventual winner goes, while Wills, also boxing for Team USA, has some good world class experience he can put to good use.

Still, the beauty of Prizefighter is anyone can win on any given night. As we’ve seen before, the odds have a tendency to be thrown right out of the window once the first fight gets underway.
