Khan injures both hands in win over Molina

By Bill Phanco: Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) may have looked like he was enjoying himself in dominating an over-matched Carlos Molina (17-1, 7 KO’s) last Saturday night in bludgeoning him into a 10th round stoppage win, but Khan ended up fracturing both hands in doing so.

Earlier today, photos of both of Khan’s badly swollen up hands were revealed, and it looks like he really injured them. It’s unclear to what extent the fractures are. Whatever the case, Khan isn’t expected back in the ring until April for a possible fight against Josesito Lopez.

It’s not hard to guess why Khan hurt his hands in this fight. First off, this really wasn’t much of a fight. Molina was a small guy with short arms that couldn’t reach the 5’10” Khan, and he was really easy to hit. It was like Khan was pounding away at some hapless sparring partner for 10 rounds, and that led to Khan landing a lot of shots that obviously led to his hand injuries.

You can’t blame Golden Boy for finding an easy mark for Khan, because they kind of were forced to do it because Khan lost his last two fights before the Molina bout, and it would have been insane to put him in with a live body that had an actual of beating him. However, Khan’s trainer Virgil Hunter needed to do a better job of having Khan keep his offense under wraps a little more because Khan was throwing a lot of punches and it really wasn’t the kind of fight that boxing fans were expecting from him. He was supposed to be fighting in an under controlled manner, but Khan looked almost the same as he normally does.

Khan’s fights are going to likely last longer now that he’s fight slightly different before by not throwing quite as many flurries. However, he really needs to work on his defense because Khan was there to be hit all night long by Molina, and if this had been Danny Garcia or Lucas Matthysse, I think Khan would have been knocked out.
