Kell Brook : Gavin Gets Nowhere Near My Belt

Unbeaten IBF 147lb champion Kell Brook (34-0, 23ko) today worked out for the media ahead of Saturday’s clash with Frankie Gavin that features on the big Matchroom Sport triple world title PPV card from London’s O2.

The confident Sheffield man, who destroyed mandatory challenger Jo Jo Dan back in February has predicted an early finish to the fight, tweeting recently that he doesn’t expect things to go beyond the first 9 minutes.

Today he spoke to Kugan Cassius of iFLtv to discuss the fight – once more dismissing the chances of the Birmingham man – who, while not fulfilling his potential thus far in the paid ranks – is still Britain’s only world amateur champion.

From the tone of his comments, one could certainly mistake Brooks confidence for complacency. When the possibility of Gavin becoming the new champion was broached, the Wincobank man was clear;

“Let me tell you something now. Frankie Gavin is getting nowhere near that belt. He can see it, he can look at it, I might even let him touch it. But he’s not gonna own it. That’s my belt – it’s took me a long time to get that belt and there’s no way “Funtime” Frankie is taking that off me.”

Is there a danger he is overlooking Gavin and keeping an eye on the division’s bigger names? He insists not and that he is fully motivated and taking this fight seriously, he said;

“I’m excited. I’ve got the momentum of the Jo Jo Dan fight – I’ve been back in the gym straight away. I told Eddie (Hearn) that I wanted to be fighting as soon as possible. He came up with the Frankie Gavin fight and it’s an exciting fight for me.”

“Frankie Gavin has wanted the fight for a long time and he’s got it. You know 2 Brits fighting for a world title – I think that’s exciting on it’s own but he’s desperately wanted the fight and he’s seen things in me that makes him believe he can beat me. That he can win.”

“I’m not looking past him – he’s a very good, classy boxer and I know that he’s up for this fight – there’s no pressure on him with the performance.”

“Yet I’ve trained very hard and I’m taking him very seriously.”
