Josh Warrington Wants Future Lee Selby Fight

If he comes through his September 5th Commonwealth title fight with Australia’s Joel Brunker (28-1, 16ko) in Leeds, then unbeaten featherweight Josh Warrington (21-0, 4ko) is eyeing a potential world title clash with new IBF champion Lee Selby in the none too distant future.

While it’s no foregone conclusion that the fanatically supported Yorkshireman will beat Brunker – whose sole blemish came against Selby last October – Warrington is confident he can indeed do the business and disagrees with Selby’s assertion that Brunker will beat him next month.

“Lee’s obviously going to say that, ” Warrington said via Sky Sports.

“He’s beaten him (Brunker) and thinks he’s a couple of leagues above me, so he’s probably going to say that. And he was at ringside for my last one and he probably thought ‘oh there’s not much here’!

“But this is adding fuel to the fire; it’s making me a little bit more determined and I am just going about business quietly. I will let my performance on September 5 do all the talking.”

Speaking of a potential world title clash with the slick Welshman – who captured his IBF strap back in May – Warrington said;

“If I got offered that (Selby fight) tomorrow I’d take it. There are a lot of people around me saying ‘slow down’ because we’ve done quite a bit in a short space of time.

“When I was only 23 I’d picked up the British, Commonwealth and European titles and a lot of my size of fighters peak around 27, 28 or 29 and I’m only 24, so I am still developing and still growing and still maturing.”

Perhaps a more realistic fight would be against Harrow’s unbeaten Mitchell Smith (13-0, 7ko), whom Warrington recently referred to as a “pound for pound di******” in a recent iFLtv interview.

Smith, recently destroyed Filipino Dennis Tubeiron inside a round in London, whom Warrington had previously gone the distance with in his last bout.

Sadly, the fight is unlikely to happen due to the rival promotional/TV allegiances between the two fighters. Smith is with Queensbury and Boxnation, Warrington, with Matchroom and Sky Sports.
