Fort Washington, MD — Light Welterweight Mike “Yes Indeed” Reed (7-0, 5 KOs) of Waldorf, M.D. stopped Jorge Marquez (4-2, 2 KOs) of Phoenix in the fifth round of their featured bout on Keystone Boxing’s “Friday Night Fights” card at Rosecroft Raceway. Reed, 21, a decorated amateur with a National Golden Gloves Championship to his credit, put all of his boxing skills on display against Marquez who, prior to this match-up, had never been stopped in his professional career.
Offensively, Reed had everything working for him, alternating between fast combinations to the head and body of Marquez and powerful digs to his opponent’s midsection that appeared to befuddle the challenger in the early going.
Marquez finally succumbed to Reed’s southpaw attack when the rising DMV prospect landed a hard shot to Marquez’s left ear in the fifth round which caused the Phoenix-based fighter to walk towards his corner. Marquez then signaled to the referee that he was unable to continue and the bout was waived off.
“It felt really good to get the stoppage like that in front of the home crowd,” an elated Reed said. “The key was the straight left hand and the body work tonight. I haven’t been in the ring since October, so it was nice to get back in the ring and get the victory. I will take the next 2 or 3 days off to enjoy it and rest my body up, and then we’ll see what’s next.”
The TKO victory extends Reed’s unbeaten streak to seven fights. In addition, Reed indicated that a fight against fellow undefeated light welterweight, Maurice “Mighty Mo” Hooker (12-0-2, 9 KOs), is something that he would be interested in sometime down the line.
Keystone Boxing Card Recap
Super Middleweight: P.J. Cajigas (1-3-1), of Franklin Park, I.L., knocked out Dimitrius Nolan (0-1), of District Heights, M.D., in the first round of their four-round bout.
Middleweight: Immanuwel Aleem (7-3, 3 KOs), of Richmond, V.A., beat Timothy Hall (7-16, 4 KOs), by unanimous decision (60-54, 59-55 [twice]) in six rounds.
Junior Middleweights: Larry Recio (3-0, 2 KOs), of Landover, M.D., knocked out Malcolm Green (0-1), of Wilmington, N.C., in 44 seconds of the first round of their four-round match.
Jarrett Hurd (11-0, 7 KOs), of Accokee, M.D., won a controversial split decision (59-55, 58-56, 55-59) versus Chris Chatman (11-3-1, 5 KOs), of Chicago, in their six-round co-feature bout.
Super Bantamweights: Marq Johns (1-0-1, 1 KO), of Philadelphia, won by TKO against Carlos Alcala (0-4), of Chicago, in the second round of their four-round tilt. The win was controversial, however, as many in attendance thought the stoppage was premature as Alcala was never knocked down or out on his feet. In fact, Alcala was returning fire in response to Johns’ flurries before the referee abruptly stepped in and waived off the fight.
Marcus Bates (2-0-1, 2 KOs) and Stephon McIntyre (2-2-2), of Atlanta, G.A., fought to a highly competitive and close split-draw. The scorecards were 38-37 (McIntyre), 38-38 (twice).
Other News & Notes
American heavyweight Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell (26-2-1, 19 KOs) was in attendance and hinted at a possible return in late March (2014). However, no specific date or opponent was mentioned by Mitchell.
