Guerrero has bulked up for Berto fight: Will it help him?
By Brian Wade: WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (30-1-1, 18 KO’s) has bulked up since his last bout last July and he’s considerably bigger as he goes into his fight with Andre Berto (28-1, 22 KO’s) on Saturday night at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, Ontario, California, USA.
Guerrero now looks like a legitimate welterweight, and judging by how much size he’s put on recently he could probably easily make 154 if he wanted to. However, just because Guerrero was able to bulk up by doing a lot of pushups doesn’t mean he’s going to be bigger puncher and he’s going to have to be for him to compete with Berto.
Guerrero didn’t look strong in his fight against Selcuk Aydin last July, and it looked like he shooting with blanks in that fight. Guerrero won the fight by outworking Aydin, but big part of Guerrero’s success in that fight was due to Aydin’s low workrate and crude boxing skills.
Guerrero still barely beat Aydin, as the fight was close at the end due to Guerrero tiring out in the last four rounds. On Saturday night, Guerrero likely won’t be able to count on Berto fighting only in brief spurts like Adyin. Berto is going to throw a lot of fast, powerful punches and he’s going to make it awfully tough on Guerrero to try and hang with him.
If Guerrero fails in this fight he still plans on sticking it out at welterweight, because he says it would be too hard for him to drop all the muscle that he’s put on in order to go back down to lightweight, which is where he was fighting before he bulked up to fight Aydin. Guerrero has also mentioned possibly moving up to 154, but you have to wonder if Guerrero doesn’t have the power to beat the top fighters at 147 how would he be able to succeed at 154?
