Groves v Jack Possibly On Mayweather Undercard

After he upset Anthony Dirrell to take the WBC 168 lb strap out in Chicago recently, it was clear Sweden’s Money Team member and new champion Badou Jack would be facing mandatory challenger George Groves (who had stepped aside to allow Jack to face Dirrell) in his very next outing.

When Groves’ promoter Sauerland Event announced that a deal had been reached between concerned parties faster than expected back in May, it became apparent that the Brit would be traveling Stateside, though an exact date and venue are still to be confirmed.

However, in a chat with fighthype.com, “The Ripper” has spoken out to suggest the contest could indeed be on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather’s final fight in September, which means the MGM Grand and Vegas.

A pretty logical step when you think about it.

He said;

“I think (Groves fight) is going to be in September on Floyd’s undercard.”

This is great news for Groves in terms of profile, irrespective of who Floyd himself chooses to face on the penciled in Sep 12th date. A Floyd PPV will still do fantastic numbers. And despite his poor run of form as of late, one has to think Groves has a better and more winnable fight in front of him now than had he faced Dirrell and not stepped aside anyway?

It’s also sure to be one in the eye for old rival Carl Froch if the fight is in Vegas.

It was always his dream to go out in a big fight there. He never would have imagined in a million years that when he knocked out Groves at Wembley, that his younger super middleweight rival would be boxing there before him!!

Such is life, eh?

At least Froch has got an MBE.
