Golovkin: Wants Cotto & All The Belts At 160

‘Catchweight King’ seems to be a more appropriate phrase to describe lineal 160lb champion and WBC middleweight boss Miguel Cotto these days, with the fans almost unanimous in their recognition of Kazakh wrecking machine Gennady Golovkin as the division’s numero uno and top name.

Despite being in attendance to watch Cotto destroy Geale last night, Golovkin -the Puerto Rican’s mandatory challenger – appears to again being given the cold shoulder by Miguel and Freddie Roach as they look towards an all but confirmed super fight with Canelo Alvarez later this year.

ThaBoxingVoice.com caught up with GGG after the action yesterday to discuss the Cotto situation and performance, as well as his own immediate future.

Ever the humble and likable personality, Golovkin said in his accented English;

“The performance was very nice, very good. First of all congratulations to Miguel and Miguel’s team like Freddie and the team, all family. Congratulations, he look amazing today.”

With Cotto admitting to Max Kellerman in ring last night that he isn’t a true middleweight, Golovkin was asked his opinion about what many of the fans already believe – That Cotto should vacate the title and stop clinging to it if he will not face the Kazakh or any other fighter at the sanctioned 160lb limit – no catchweight BS and tipping the scales to his advantage.

Ever the professional, Golovkin said tactfully;

“Right now he is champion that’s seen as middleweight. It doesn’t matter how many pounds he weigh in you know? He’s great champion. My goal is all the belts in middleweight division and I want fight with him.”

“I respect Miguel, I respect everybody, he is great champion, a great champion. (But) I want that fight for everybody.”

It’s no secret that Golovkin is one of the most avoided, yet still very active fighters out there – the most recent person to link themselves to him for a share of the limelight, being “The Ego” Carl Froch, who still hasn’t indulged us regarding whether he’ll take the fight against him or not. (Bet your house he won’t)

Asked about who he sees in his immediate future, GGG said;

“For me it doesn’t matter, seriously. It doesn’t matter who. I’m ready.”

And it’s that attitude, coupled with his knockout power and willingness to put on “big drama shows” for us fans that makes us tune in fight after fight – whomever is in the opposing corner.

Miguel should be ashamed of himself. Golovkin can only beat who will step up to fight him and all the fans know who the diva is here – not that it matters to Miguel it would seem. He will vacate his belt if and when the WBC enforce the mandatory. He already has as good as said so.

That’s boxing, huh?
