Tyson Fury has come out and said that he did not watch Wilders historic match against Bermane Stiverne to capture the WBC heavyweight title, but did congratulate him on his victory. The heavyweight scene is very open now with top talents like Bryant Jennings, Tyson Fury and Alexander Povetkin ready to take over from Wladimir Klitschko as the lineal champion of the world. The interesting thing is that Tyson Fury does not seem to be caught up in the hype around the newly crowned WBC strap holder and has his sights set solely on the main man in the division, Wladimir Klitschko.
It would seem that Fury has an ideal situation in his mind where he beats Christian Hammer in February then goes on to take the set of titles away from Klitschko in their fight later in the year. He would then be in a position to carve out his own legacy as a champion facing the likes of Deontay Wilder and the five or ten other big named heavyweights that are operating at world level right now.
There would also be some interesting domestic fights which could occur if this was to be the case as by the time this set of events has taken place fighters like David Price and Anthony Joshua may be getting their careers together to the point where a title shot may be viable. In an interview with IFL TV Anthony Joshua stated he would be fighting April whether his back injury is healed or not, and seemed to be optimistic about fighting twice in that same month. These fights along with the possibility of a David Haye return at some point could lead to some interesting domestic clashes and these fighters have to be viewed as world level competitors whether a title is on the line or not.
First thing is first for the big man though and whilst Christian Hammer is viewed as a huge underdog, stranger things have happened in boxing and the threat of an upset is always there. Boxing fans have not forgotten that Fury was floored in his bout with Steve Cunningham who was more or less the same height as Hammer is. The other question is whether Fury gets his shot at Wladimir at or, Wilder may have ‘jumped the queue’ in his thrilling victory over Stiverne. Yes Fury is the WBO mandatory, but boxing can be unpredictable and fans could be waiting until 2016 to see him finally get his shot.
