Froch May Well Return Says Trainer – Only ‘ Elite’ Fighters Can Challenge Him

168lb boss Carl Froch, recently stripped of his WBA (reg) title for inactivity, has hinted more than enough recently that the end is nigh. Promoter Eddie Hearn also waded in last week to say he too suspects we’ve seen the last of “The Cobra”, yet The Daily Star are reporting that long time trainer and Team GB Olympic boxing head coach Rob McCracken, may well think otherwise.

Provided Froch fights on for the right reasons – and not just the money – then the former fighter-turned-trainer can feasibly see a return.

He said;

“If he gets the terms that he wants to fight again then I think he will. If he doesn’t get the terms he wants to fight again – he’s very wealthy and doesn’t have any pressure on him – then he won’t”

McCracken, who knows the Nottingham fighter better than most, also warned that the motivation, desire and hunger must still be present if he is to even contemplate a ring-return. The last time Froch had a problem with motivation and preparation, he got dumped on his ass in the opening round of the first George Groves fight.

McCracken said;

“He’s got to want to fight. If he’s motivated, wants to fight somebody and beat somebody and get the rewards he deserves for all his hard work – then no problem.”

“If James DeGale beats Andre Dirrell he’ll be within his rights to start calling Carl Froch out – but until then it’s irrelevent.”

“He’s got nothing to prove. Only elite fighters like Golovkin or Ward can challenge him.”

It may well just be wishful thinking on behalf of McCracken, who last cornered Froch a year ago when he beat Groves in their rematch. Froch has personally stated in the past that when his trusted trainer tells him it’s time to call it a day, he will. Yet McCracken appears not to be doing that and leaving the decision solely to his fighter.

The fact Froch also recently announced his partner is expecting another child, sends the barometer firmly into the retirement section for me, yet it would seem from all accounts, Froch himself is still sitting firmly on the fence while he figures out what to do next.
