Former light heavyweight world title challenger Andrzej Fonfara (26-3, 15 KOs) defeated Doudou Ngumbu (33-6, 12 KOs) by a workmanlike 10 round unanimous decision tonight in a fight that was a tougher than it should have been for Fonfara at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. Fonfara was hit cleanly by a lot of Ngumbu’s best power shots in the fight.

The defense definitely wasn’t there tonight for the 6’2” Fonfara, but he was still able to outwork Ngumbu to win by the scores of 98-92, 97-93 and 97-93. The 98-92 score was a way off from the fight that actually took place in the ring. Ngumbu did a lot better than that score.

Ngumbu was hurt in the 5th round from a left hand from Fonfara. In the 10th, Fonfara had his way with a tired Ngumbu in nailing him with a lot of hard power shots.

The win showed how far away Fonfara is from the other top light heavyweights in the division. You’d have to favor Bernard Hopkins, Sergey Kovalev, Lucian Bute, Artur Beterbiev, Jean Pascal, Jurgen Brähmer, Eleider Alvarez and of course Adonis Stevenson over Fonfara.

In the co-feature bout, WBO bantamweight champion Tomoki Kameda (31-0, 19 KOs) beat Alejandro Hernandez (28-11-2, 15 KOs) by a 12 round split decision. Kameda threw a lot more punches than Hernandez in the first three quarters of the fight. However, Kameda then faded badly in the last quarter of the fight and was outworked. The judges scored the fight 115-113 and 115-113 for Kameda and 115-113 for Hernandez.

This was not the type of performance that Kameda was looking for if he wants to become a star in the United States. He threw a lot of punches, but he lacked punching power and it wasn’t a great fight to watch due to his lack of power.

Super featherweight contender Javier Fortuna (26-0-1, 19 KOs) beat Abner Cotto (18-3, 8 KOs) by a 5th round knockout. Fortunate dropped Cotto with a left to the head. The fight was then stopped at 1:12 of the round.

Cotto knocked Fortuna down with two punches to the back of the head in the 3rd. The referee ruled that it was a legitimate knockdown, but he then took a point away from Cotto for the punches. It was very strange.

At the end of the 4th round, Cotto was hit by a shot after the bell that sent Cotto to the canvas. The referee then took a point away from Fortunate for the late hit.
