Floyd Beats Golovkin Says His Father But Not Fighting “No Damn Giant”

Since he beat Manny Pacquiao 10 days ago, the calls for Floyd Mayweather to face all manner of opponents next have ignited social media – suggestions from the likely to the frankly ridiculous and everything in between.

Wladimir Klitschko at a catch-weight anyone??

All joking aside, on my “highly unlikely” list is the shout for a 154lb contest with big-hitting Kazakh Gennady Golovkin.

Golovkin’s oft vocal trainer Abel Sanchez has mentioned it previously as has Golovkin himself – saying it would be a dream fight for him – and he’d be prepared to boil down to take it.

The social media speculation has not got unnoticed by Floyd’s father, who speaking to the media recently said of the potential contest and the weight/size issues it presents;

“If triple G can make weight then that would be different but we’re not fit to be fighting no damn giant. I’m a tell you this right here. If he come down at 154 by the time he eat (following re-hydration) and fight that night?? But if he 170-180 (fight night) you just don’t know, man….”

Of the fact many are tipping Golovkin, especially because of weight differentials, Snr said;

“They’re saying that Floyd won’t beat him, but I’m just telling you because – (they say) the guys punches are too big and strong man, ya know? Floyd probably – all he be doing is taking a lot of punches – it’d be a struggle but I see Floyd beats him. Ain’t nobody can beat him. (Floyd)”

Well there you have it. It’s not a fight the fans are going to see, yet it is a fun talking point if anything else. Floyd has once again re-asserted his last fight is September and speculation continues as to whether or not he fights on and breaks Marciano’s 49-0 record.

I can’t see him not doing that. Not after all this “best ever” talk that has once again gathered frenetic pace. Yet for the time being his focus is on September and finding a suitable opponent.

Golovkin’s remains on Saturday night, when he steps in with light-punching southpaw Willie Monroe Jr.

Yet one thing is for sure.

GGG will stay at 160 to clean up and will almost certainly never cross paths with Floyd Mayweather in the ring….
