Eubank Jr Wants To Fight Golovkin

After he wouldn’t vacate his WBA (interim) 160lb title – thus ensuring negotiations for the rematch with WBO mandatory Billy Joe Saunders broke down recently – it would appear that Brighton’s Chris Eubank Jr is to ultimately stay on the WBA route according to promoter Frank Warren – a road which leads to all things triple G.

Warren spoke to iFLtv for their ‘Cassius & Helder’ show to talk about the former super-middleweight legend’s son – and what the plans for the team ultimately are. Asked if chasing down Golovkin’s WBA (sup) is the ultimate aim – a route blocked by WBA (reg) Danny Jacobs – Warren said;

“They say they do. I mean Chris has made it very clear that he wants to fight Golovkin – I think it’s much too soon but – what do I know? At the end of the day he will fight in July. I was trying to get him out in June but time has run away from us again because of all this messing around (negotiating for Saunders 2) so the July date is when he’ll be out.”

“And it won’t be against Golovkin, that’s for sure!”

You get the distinct impression that Warren is frustrated at what he perceives as the tedium and frustration of dealing with the notoriously flamboyant Eubank Snr, who is guiding every minute detail of his son’s career in a managerial regard.

Asked if proceedings have left a bad taste in the mouth, Frank was clear of his position;

“For me it’s just irritating and it’s stupid – because there’s no sense to it – you know, one minute there was talk of vacating the WBA title and fighting for the British title – which I talked him out of. But then, when you want to push that WBA side – to park that one up – to get this big fight (BJS) on – that become a real point and a real issue for them.”

“I don’t agree with them – but we are where we are. We’ve expended so much energy and time on this and it’s become boring. And it’s become ridiculous.”

Saunder’s was risking his WBO world title challenge to Ireland’s Andy Lee by fighting Eubank Jr again now – win or lose. He will now fight in a warm-up before a big showdown with Lee is made for September.

With the likes of Danny Jacobs, Saunders, Lemieux, N’Dam and Eubank all there or there abouts at world level at 160lb – there are certainly exciting fights ahead for the division regardless.
