Cotto destroys Geale

WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) paved the way towards a possible fight against Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez by stopping an over-matched, underpowered Daniel Geale (31-4, 16 KOs) in the 4th round on Saturday night to successfully defend his World Boxing Council middleweight title in front of 12,157 fans at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Geale, 34, quit after getting knocked down twice by Cotto in the 4th. Geale looked like he could have continued after getting up from a knockdown, but he opted instead to fight another day by telling the referee Harvey Dock that he didn’t want to continue fighting. The bout was subsequently stopped at 1:27 of the round.

Cotto knocked Geale down with a body shot for the first knockdown in the 4th. Moments later, Cotto finished Geale off with a beautful left hook that landed on his chin, sending him down on his backside. Geale’s head was partially through the ropes. After struggling to his defeat, Geale calmly told the referee that he didn’t want to continue. This was similar to what Geale had done in his 3rd round knockout loss to Gennady Golovkin last year.

Canelo Alvarez could be next for Cotto unless the two fighters can’t negotiate the fight. They tried recently to put a fight together, but they weren’t able to come to an agreement. It be a pity if we see something similar to that happening again. Cotto says he has a verbal agreement with HBO and Golden Boy Promotions for a fight against Canelo. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the fight will take place. Cotto and Canelo have big egos, and there’s always a chance the fight might not get made.

You would have to feel sorry for Roc Nation Sports if Cotto doesn’t face Canelo next because they recently gave Cotto a huge 3-fight contract, and they didn’t get much for the first fight in terms of a big name or a competitive fight. This was mismatch coming in the door. Geale wasn’t someone that was expected to be competitive with Cotto. He was just a guy that was knocked out by Gennady Golovkin last year in three rounds.

It looked bad that Cotto and selected a fighter that Golovkin knocked out because there was no real reason for Cotto to have chosen him other than to try and show boxing fans the difference between the two of them. Golovkin did a far better job of stopping Geale than Cotto did. It was a lot neater and cleaner with Golovkin, and he was hit a lot less by Geale compared to Cotto.
