Canelo Blog Part 3: Tuesday, September 13

What’s the biggest difference form fighting at 154 and 160? It seems only a small difference, but what are the changes/adjustments you have to make during training camp?

“No matter what weight a fighter is competing at, it takes hard work and dedication.

“For the last six years, my body has felt best and I have been strongest as a junior middleweight. I still feel that way today.

“Boxing history is full of fighters who have stayed at the same weight for the majority of their careers – and others who have moved up.

“Marvin Hagler spent his entire career at middleweight. Roy Jones Jr. went from middleweight to heavyweight. Bernard Hopkins spent a long part of his career at middleweight and then jumped two divisions to light heavyweight.

“Do I think I will eventually move up to middleweight and perhaps beyond? I do; when my body feels it’s time.

“My promoters and trainers have always told me that as you get into your late 20s and early 30s, your body continues to change and going up in weight become more natural. Having just turned 26, I will see how I feel as I grow older.

“For the time being, I will continue to campaign at junior middleweight and am looking forward to once again regaining the championship at that weight class.

“What 2017 has in store…stay tuned.”

Looking at Mexican boxing today, you are probably one of the best fighters from that country right now. What do you have to do from now on to make sure you belong in the rich history go Mexican boxing?

“I feel like I am making my way into that pantheon. Mexican fighters have the reputation of taking on everyone and leaving everything in the ring. If you look at my record and the way I fight, I am trying to follow that model.

“Anyone who knows me understands how much my country means to me. I was born in Mexico, I live in Mexico, and I spend most of my down time in Mexico, as well. I grew up idolizing Mexican fighters of the previous generations.

“Fighting and beating Miguel Cotto and playing a role in the Mexico versus Puerto Rico rivalry was among the biggest highlights of my boxing life.

“But I also realize I am still young and have to keep working to be known as one of the all-time greats of Mexican boxing. That is a major motivation for me.

“So I will continue to do what I have done since I was 15 years old: Take my training seriously, fight the best of the best and take nothing for granted. If I am lucky enough to be considered among the all-time greats of Mexican fighters, I will be extremely grateful.

“I would also like to note that there are many other Mexican fighters – particularly with Golden Boy Promotions who are today helping to carry the torch of the past. Champions like Francisco Vargas and contenders like Antonio Orozco are helping to ensure that Mexican boxing will be here forever.”

The HBO Sports special ROAD TO CANELO/SMITH debuts Saturday, September 10 at 12:45 a.m. (ET/PT) immediately following HBO World Championship Boxing.

Canelo Blog Part 1: Tuesday, August 30 – Canelo vs Smith

Discuss what it will be like fighting at the home of “America’s Team”, the Dallas Cowboys. Why Liam Smith instead of Gennady Golovkin?

“I have always loved fighting in Texas, and the opportunity to fight in front of tens of thousands of fans at such an incredible venue is very special to me.

“When I finished my fight with James Kirkland, I told my team that I wanted to come back to Texas at least once a year, and I am a man of my word.

“As Texas borders Mexico, I expect many of my fellow countrymen to come to the fight, and I am looking forward to putting on a show.

“When I train, I only focus on one fighter, and that is the one in front of me. Liam Smith is undefeated and the WBO champion. He has knocked out many other fighters and is hungry to become a superstar.

“Like always, I am going to work extremely hard throughout training camp, get myself into the best condition possible and hopefully come out with another victory.

“As for the future, I’ll let others do the talking, but I have always said that I fear no man, and when I feel my body is ready, I will take on anyone and everyone in the division that I am fighting.

“For right now, I have only one goal, and that is to be in best physical and mental shape of my life to come in Sept. 17 and perform at the best of my ability for my fans.”
