Braehmer decisions Gutknecht
By Jeff Sorby: EBU light heavyweight champion Eduard Gutknecht (24-2,9 KO’s) didn’t have the firepower to turn back 34-year-old former WBO light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (39-2, 30 KO’s), who beat him by a 12 round unanimous decision in a competitive fight tonight in a WBO light heavyweight title eliminator bout.
Braehmer controlled the action from the outside with his jabs, and did a good job of throwing combinations. Judges scored it 114-113, 116-111 and 117-110.
Gutknecht tried to rough Braehmer up in the first five rounds, but it didn’t have much of an effect on Braehmer. He ignored the games that Gutknecht was trying to play, and he just kept hitting him with really nice jabs. Gutknecht was numerous times in the fight to stop pulling down on Braehmer’s head, and finally the referee Randy Neumann took a point away from Gutknecht in the 9th.
Gutknecht fought well in rounds 9 through 12, and landed a lot of right hands to the head. Braehmer focused on trying to clinch on the inside to shut Gutknecht, and jab him whenever they were on the outside.
Unbeaten light heavyweight Robert Woge (11-0, 10 KO’s) stopped Hakim Zoulikha (18-4, 9 KO’s) in the 11th round. Woge knocked Zoulikha down once in the round, and then moments later, Zoulikha took a knee, causing referee Randy Neumann to stop the fight. Despite winning the fight, Woge didn’t look good, as he was hit a lot in the fight and show poor defensive skills.
