Amir Khan – “I Believe I Have Mayweather’s Number”

After Floyd Mayweather’s career defining fight on Saturday, it would seem that the tears of millions of Filipino’s were not yet dry when one man ringside – former 2x 140lb champion Amir Khan – spoke to BBC radio 5live to say he is the man in prime position to face BOTH Mayweather and Pacquiao next.

Khan, who faces light-punching American Chris Algieri on May 29th as part of the PBC broadcast from the Barclays Centre, New York, said;

“I’m in a position where I could fight both, but I want Mayweather.”

Khan who has desperately been chasing Floyd for 2 years or more keeps insisting he cannot fight in September because of Ramadan in July and the time he needs to recover from fasting during that period.

He knows Floyd has the one fight left in September so it would seem he is flogging a dead horse. Yet he told the Sportsweek radio show that Mayweather Promotions Leonard Ellerbe approached him after the last bell on Saturday and said; “Let’s get that fight on.”

Khan, who last boxed in December when he beat Devon Alexander in some style, said;

“Financially they know it will be a big fight and it will be an exciting fight. I think Mayweather’s team want the fight but I’ve also spoken to Manny’s team and they’ve said the same thing. They want the fight.”

“But I really believe I have Mayweather’s number and I’m ready for whatever he wants.”

What bit Amir doesn’t understand about Floyd’s final fight being in September I do not know. He said;

“I can’t do September because of Ramadan (which ends mid-July). It just depends on my schedule this year. But if we can do this year or early next year I will jump at it.”

So would a million other guys from 140-154 Amir.

Yet after watching Saturday’s masterclass, Amir, who fights with a similar “fast hands, fast feet” philosophy to Pacquiao, seems to fancy himself as the man for the job of beating Floyd. He said;

“The mistake Manny made was to drop to Mayweather’s pace. You need to stick to your own pace and that’s what a younger man could do.”

“Mayweather is a very classy fighter but he’s not a big puncher and he won’t hurt you.”

“One boxer who could get to him, throw a lot of shots and show a lot of heart, is Amir Khan.”

Referring to yourself in the 3rd person? Oh dear, Amir.

It ain’t gonna happen, son. Just give it up.
