Amir Khan Believes His Victory Against Collazo Might Have Scared Pacquiao Away
While the idea of an Amir Khan vs. Manny Pacquiao fight was never a realistic one, the match-up has been extensively discussed by the boxing fans in the recent past.
After defeating Brandon Rios, Pacquiao’s next opponent was nowhere to be seen. Nobody had even the slightest clue as to whom team Pacquiao was going to face next. After a short while, the online boxing community took it upon themselves to discuss the possibilities, which included Ruslan Provodnikov, Juan Manuel Marquez, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Amir Khan.
There were of course other names, but it seemed unlikely that after Pacquiao’s knockout loss to Marquez, he would want to move in the opposite direction, especially with his retirement clearly on the horizon.
In a recent interview with MancunianMatters.co.uk, Amir Khan reveled that team Khan was indeed interested in a bout against Manny Pacquiao, and had even tried to establish contact to get the ball rolling.
“I said I wanted to fight Manny Pacquiao. I offered the fight to Pacquiao’s team recently, and they didn’t take it. I got my team to speak to Bob Arum, and we got nothing back, and they went with Algieri,” stated Khan.
I must admit that it was a surprising turn of events when Manny Pacquiao vs. Chris Algieri was announced so fast after his win over Provodnikov. It felt as thought team Pacquiao was hoping that Algieri come out victorious, so they could swiftly snatch up a fight against them.
When the interview with Amir Khan arrived at his victory over Luis Collazo, Khan commented about this possibly influencing team Pacquiao from ignoring their attempts to communicate: “Maybe that scares him, I don’t know,” presumed Khan.
There could be certain factors that Freddie Roach takes into consideration when it comes to Khan, and it is entirely possible that Roach believes that it wouldn’t be the best fight for Manny. Having said that, a victory over Collazo is certainly not something that would drive Manny away from a facing him.
Khan goes on calling Algieri a “nobody,” but then quickly retracts that statement.
While most would certainly agree that there are much better fights out there for Manny Pacquiao, we all know that there are various pieces that string together a fight. Most try to find the best balance between the financial gain and the most optimal choice for a victorious result.
Manny Pacquiao vs. Chris Algieri takes place on November 22 in Macao, China. Amir Khan does not have a fight scheduled at this time.
