Richard Towers Looks To Prove The Doubters Wrong

Hatton-20Day-202_1760RICHARD TOWERS is determined to prove a point to British fight fans when he faces Australia’s Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne in Hull on Saturday night.

The giant Yorkshireman encountered some criticism after his June 2012 victory over awkward Frenchman Gregory Tony and has been out of the ring since.

During that time, Browne has boxed four times and turned himself into something of a fans’ favourite.

But Towers isn’t letting the doubters get to him and is relishing being the underdog for the first time in his career.

“People are overlooking me, but they don’t understand boxing,” he said.

“I’ve had a lot of criticism since the Gregory Tony fight, but I’m not in boxing to just keep fans happy, I’m in boxing to provide a solid future to my family Continue reading

Lucas Browne reckons he can be the new Mike Tyson

Aussie power-puncher Lucas Browne reckons he can be the new Mike Tyson

As a boy, Browne watched Tyson blast his way to the world heavyweight championship – and the former cage fighter is enjoying a similarly explosive ring career.

Of his 17 wins, 15 have been by knock out and Browne aims his power punches at Richard Towers in a hotly-anticipated clash of unbeaten heavyweights in Hull on Saturday night.

The winner gets a crack at the Commonwealth belt, currently worn by David Price, and Browne is planning a Tysonesque performance as he closes in on his target to be the first Aussie to hold the title since Dave Smith was dethroned in 1917.

“I grew up watching Tyson,” said the 34 year-old from Perth. Continue reading

Ricky Hatton: Richard Towers and Lucas Browne will steal the show

Ricky Hatton says Richard Towers and Lucas Browne’s Heavyweight battle will be a showstopper at the Hull Ice Arena on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports.

Towers and Browne clash in an eliminator for the Commonwealth title, and as promoter of both men, ‘The Hitman’ knows exactly what to expect with the stakes so high – and that’s fireworks.

“It’s a great fight, a great clash of styles,” said Hatton. “Being the promoter of both, it’s a little bit upsetting to see them fighting each other. They’re two of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet, but there’s nothing nice about the way they fight.

“This is great opportunity for them both. Lucas has a WBC ranking of 15th, which is a scalp Richard will be after. If you get to 15th in the world, things open up so it’s a big, big fight and it’s going to be very interesting. Continue reading
