Cotto-Martinez: Exciting for the wrong reasons?

Cotto-Martinez: Exciting for the wrong reasons?

While negotiations are moving particularly slowly, it seems that the June 7th showdown between current Ring/WBC champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2) and The Ring No.3 Jr. Middleweight Miguel Cotto (38-4-0) is inevitable. Their managers have decided on a fight name, venue, date and even catchweight, and are likely now ironing out more details. While many fans would rather see undefeated knockout-king Gennady Golovkin face Martinez instead, this bout remains interesting to the public. The reasons for this, however, may not be the kinds that lend themselves to an actually enjoyable fight.

Some analysts, for one, remain puzzled as to how Cotto has exactly earned this fight. Having lost 2 of his last 3 weights at Jr. Middleweight (both hard fought unanimous decisions), Cotto came back with a riveting knockout early in round 3 of the largely unheralded Delvin Rodriguez. Though Cotto has held world titles in every weight class from 140 – 154 pounds and has long been considered a world class fighter, he has not convinced everyone that he can still deliver that kind of performance against a world champion level fighter. What is even more questionable about him receiving this fight, however, is that Cotto has never even fought at Middleweight, and hasn’t been a World Champion for close to two years.

Sergio Martinez targeting Gennady Golovkin after the June 7th Cotto bout

Sergio Martinez targeting Gennady Golovkin after the June 7th Cotto bout

If everything works out well for WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) with his June 7th title defense against the ambitious Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s), then Sergio wants to face WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) in a unification fight. But Sergio must get past Cotto, because a loss in that fight would make the Golovkin bout a meaningless one for him.

“I have a hard, complicated fight ahead [Miguel Cotto], but seeing how things are working, I know I’m gonna finish him. Once I KO Cotto on June 7, then I can concentrate on Golovkin,” Martinez said to Munod.

Styles Clash: Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez on June 7, 2014 at MSG

Styles Clash: Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez on June 7, 2014 at MSG

We all know that Miguel Cotto (38-4-0) is a fan of fighting at the Madison Square Garden in New York. Maybe it’s because he feels that he has a much bigger following and support there than anywhere else, or maybe it’s because out of the ten times that he had fought in New York, he came out a winner nine times.

Come June 7th, Cotto will be facing his toughest MSG opponent yet: Sergio Martinez (51-2-2).

Miguel Cotto is a fighter before a boxer, at least in the way he prefers to press the action. Never backing down and never leaving any room for anyone to question his heart, Cotto is a fan of middle ring action.

Sanchez wants Sergio Martinez and Quillin for Golovkin

golovkin78483Trainer Abel Sanchez doesn’t understand why WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) and WBO champion Peter Quillin (30-0, 22 KO’s) aren’t trying to fight his guy WBA champion Gennady Golovkin (28-0, 25 KO’s) to prove who the best guy is in the division. Sanchez feels that the excuses that Quillin and Sergio have been making for why they can’t fight Golovkin are pretty weak ones. He feels that they should be willing to step up and take the challenge against Golovkin rather than play it safe against other opponents.

“Peter Quillin stands behind the network [HBO vs. Showtime] right now,” Sanchez said to the Boxing Channel. “If he really wants to prove he’s the best, we’re willing to fight him.

Cotto must pressure Sergio Martinez, says Jones Jr.

cotto 2321While the proposed June 7th fight between Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) and WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) still hasn’t been negotiated, Roy Jones Jr. chimed in on his thoughts about the fight anyway. He sees the fight coming down to a couple of things.

If Sergio boxes Cotto, then his chances of success increase dramatically. But if Cotto is able to turn the fight into an inside war like he did in his last fight against fringe junior middleweight contender Delvin Rodriguez then that gives Cotto an excellent chance of beating the soon to be 39-year-old Sergio.

Maidana would be tough fight for Mayweather, says Sergio Martinez

maidana790If Marcos Maidana ends up being the one that faces Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his next pay-per-view bout on Showtime on May 3rd, Sergio Martinez sees Mayweather as having problems in trying to beat him. Sergio, a tough fighter from Argentina, thinks Maidana won’t be an easy out for Mayweather if he chooses to face him.

Mayweather hasn’t revealed whether he’ll face Maidana or an arguably weaker test in Amir Khan, but fans have pretty much spoken with their desire not to see Mayweather fight Khan. Maidana would be an upgrade over Khan despite the fact that Khan beat him three years ago.

Miguel Cotto: I want to go with [Sergio] Martinez

cotto75Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) told the media on Monday in Puerto Rico that he wants to fight WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) next. Cotto is targeting the 38-year-old Sergio because he wants to win his belt and capture his 4th division world title in the process.

It’s a goal that Cotto has that he wants to try and accomplish. It obviously doesn’t hurt that Cotto will get a huge payday in the fight. It’s got to be a signicant one, because he’s turning down $10 million+ offer from Golden Boy Promotions to fight former WBA/WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in March.

Arum wants Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez next year in June at Giants Stadium

YouTube video
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is interested in matching Miguel Cotto vs. WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez next year in June during the Puerto Rican weekend at the Giants Stadium, according to Dan Rafael. Martinez, 39, has already tweeted that he’s up for the fight and there’s talk that it could take place at a catch-weight of 158.

Cotto hasn’t decided yet, and he’s going to think it over and look at all the options has available to him. Whether Martinez is the best fight he can get is unclear.

If Cotto can get a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. or former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez then that would be by far the better fight than to face the arguably much less popular Martinez.

A rematch with Mayweather is something that Cotto has already said he wants, and he should be looking to stay in the running for that fight instead of moving up to middleweight to fight a bigger fighter like Sergio.

Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez: “I would love to fight Miguel Cotto”

YouTube video
Video by Carlos Sacriste – This Labor Day weekend, universally recognized Middleweight Champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez was in San Antonio, Texas, participating in the annual “People Magazine en Espanol” festival, representing HBO Latino.
While the Argentine ambassador was visiting with the thousands in attendance, the slick southpaw spoke about how he plans to fulfill his remaining two fight obligation with Home Box Office.

Co-promoter DiBella Entertainment stated publicly that Martinez will not return to the ring until spring of 2014, due to injuries suffered to his hand, shoulder, and knee. After his previous outing in Argentina, in front of almost 50,000 of his adoring fans, the 38 year old fighter stated that he wasn’t happy with the way his body responded throughout the grueling 12 round battle with previously undefeated Briton Martin Murray, and wanted to give his body adequate time to heal.

“I don’t want to fight until my body is 100%,” stated the talented boxer/puncher. “I haven’t trained since my last fight, and won’t fight until I’m all healed.”
