Saul Alvarez vs. Josesito Lopez news

(Photo credit: Ester Lin/Showtime) LAS VEGAS (Sept. 12, 2012) –- Emmy award-winning broadcaster Brian Kenny, the longtime anchor of ESPN’s SportsCenter and ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights and current anchor and host on MLB Network, and World Boxing Association (WBA) Welterweight World Champion Paulie Malignaggi have been added to the broadcast team for this Saturday’s four-fight SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas (SHOWTIME, 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT).

The 22-year-old, red-headed Alvarez’s fights have garnered higher TV ratings in his home country than the national soccer team. Canelo vs. Lopez: “A for Effort”

(Photo credit: Ester Lin/Showtime) By Marc Livitz: Hardcore fans and the so-called purists alike may feel themselves a bit torn this upcoming Saturday evening. Contrary to popular American belief is the fact that Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day. There’s always been a reason why the weekend which most closely precedes or follows the sixteenth of September is a hot date for the sweet science and the old lady will be wearing her finest pearls this weekend.

Sadly and to the disappointment of many of her loyal and regular suitors, she’s in a bit of a huff over the idea that a few knuckleheads have intentionally thrown some mud upon her nicest dress. The cleaning bill once again has inexplicably been chucked in the direction of the fans.

One of the biggest sins of the sponsor and spawn is to put the paying customer in a corner. The old goat has been in a face-off with the younger brood for a long while, as we all know. Of course, there are and continue to be stumbling blocks to the fights which we all want to enjoy. The one placed before us was however arguably avoidable. It’s still in the nature of people, particularly men, to go ahead as planned without clear regard to the consequences of their actions. Continue reading

Saul Alvarez ready for Josesito Lopez on Saturday

Oscar De La Hoya

Thank you very much to all the media, everyone, participating. We are getting closer to Knockout Kings. We are very, very excited and thrilled that everyone is coming together and making this event one of the most publicized, one of the most promoted events in boxing history.

September 15 is a very special day and a very special weekend for all the Mexicans and Mexicans across the world. We wanted to make sure we back it with a tremendous, tremendous card on September 15th. But at the same time, we wanted to make sure that the whole world knows that live on Showtime Championship Boxing, live from the MGM, there will be big time boxing in Las Vegas.

We obviously know it is headlined by Canelo Alvarez versus Josesito Lopez. The semi main event is Jhonny Gonzalez versus Daniel Ponce De Leon, which will be a 12 rounder for the WBC featherweight world title. Also, it’s a pleasure to also have Marcos Maidana versus Jesus Soto Karass, which should be a barnburner. That’ll be a 12 rounder for the WBA intercontinental welterweight title, and Leo Santa Cruz versus Eric Morel, which is a12 round bantamweight world championship fight.

This is a card that makes me especially proud. These are the types of cards that we dream about watching for free, and especially live from an A-class venue like the MGM. We are extremely happy to announce that we already have more than 12,000 tickets sold. They’re selling fast and we’re expecting a complete sell out. Continue reading
