Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN (PBC on ESPN) presented by Corona Extra will feature live coverage on ESPN and WatchESPN on Saturday, August 1 from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center of two 12-round fights: a welterweight bout between undefeated Junior Welterweight champion Danny “Swift” García (30-0, 17 KOs) and Brooklyn’s Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KOs); and a middleweight bout between Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs (29-1, 26 KOs) and Sergio “Latin Snake” Mora (28-3-2, 9 KOs).
Danny Garcia makes his welterweight debut this Saturday against Paulie Malignaggi in New York on the PBC on ESPN card in a non-title fight that has been heavily criticised by many fans as meaningless.
Given Garcia’s recent questionable performances against Mauricio Herrera and Lamont Peterson either side of last years Rod Salka mismatch, many question why he is fighting a light-hitting 34 year old who has been inactive 15 months and is coming off a brutal beatdown at the hands of Shawn Porter last April. Saturday night sees the debut of Danny Garcia at welterweight, when he fights Paulie Malignaggi on the PBC on ESPN card from the Barclays Centre, Brooklyn, NY.
Garcia has come under fire from some quarters for his victories over both Mauricio Herrera and Lamont Peterson either side of last year’s awful Rod Salka mismatch, with some fans on social media renaming the Philly fighter Danny “Gift” Garcia in lieu of him controversially getting the nod on those occasions.
Ahead of Saturday’s fight with Malignaggi, Garcia has spoken to ESPN.com to say he is feeling stronger at the weight and has no concerns regarding his 34 year old opponent, who is boxing for the first time since being destroyed in 4 rounds by Shawn Porter 15 months ago. Continue reading
He is more comfortable behind the comms mic these days, and hasn’t been in a boxing ring since the four round beatdown in April last year at the hands of Shawn Porter, but Brooklyn’s Paulie Malignaggi returns on August 1st in a 12 round non-title bout against Danny Garcia on a PBC on ESPN card, and has said via fighthubtv that he has the bit back between his teeth again.
Malignaggi was due to box on the Khan/Algieri undercard back in May against the unheralded Danny O’Connor but withdrew through injury and now takes on the far tougher task of Garcia – who himself has been criticised for recent performances against Lamont Peterson and Mauricio Herrera – and is debuting at 147 lbs. A light heavyweight contest between Brooklyn’s own “Notorious” Travis Peterkin (15-0,7 KOs) and fellow undefeated prospect Lenin Castillo (12-0, 7 KOs) highlights a full night of undercard action at Barclays Center on Saturday, August 1. Continue reading
Sugar Shane Mosley thinks former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KOs) will come out on top in his fight next month against unbeaten Danny Garcia (30-0, 17 KOs) on August 1st at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Garcia, 27, is the favorite to win the fight though based on his superior punching power, youth and the fact that he’s unbeaten. Garcia has beaten some tough fighters recently in Lamont Peterson and Lucas Matthysse, both of which would likely be favored to beat Malignaggi if they were to fight.
The only way Mosley is going to be correct with his prediction of Malignaggi beating Garcia is if Malignaggi is able to develop his punching power enough to hurt Garcia. I don’t think that’s possible though. Malignaggi has never been a big puncher even when he fought in the 140 pound division. At 34, he’s probably not going to be any stronger than he was in the past.
