Matthysse vs. Provodnikov fight looking good for March 28th

Matthysse vs. Provodnikov fight looking good for March 28th

In a recent interview Oscar De La Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions, promised fans that the much anticipated bout between former world title challenger Lucas Matthysse and former WBC light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov would be taking place for March 28th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. In the sport where a lot of fights get missed it is good to hear a guarantee of the fight taking place from the promoter.

This is a fight many in boxing are looking forward to due to the fact that each of the combatants mentioned are amongst the best in the business at what they do. Each man has the skill set to cut off the ring and land on their opponents, although this is the type of fight where neither man will have to look far to find each other.

De La Hoya working on Matthysse vs. Provodnikov bout

If Oscar De La Hoya gets his way, boxing fans may soon be seeing a fight between Lucas Matthysse and Ruslan Provodnikov taking place this year. De La Hoya is reportedly working hard to try and put the fight together. It’s a doable fight due to Provodnikov not being promoted by Golden Boy rival Top Rank, and a situation where the Russian fighter needing a win badly after his loss to Chris Algieri last year.

Provodnikov lost his WBO light welterweight title in that fight to Algieri, and he’s done much since then other than beat a 40-year-old Jose Luis Castillo recently.

Broner gets big UD win over Taylor; Matthysse wants to stop Ortiz, but Referee beats him to it

YouTube video
Adrien “Problem” Broner 29-1 (22KO), comfortable in his Cincinnati, OH backyard, took a while to soften up Emmanuel Taylor 18-3 (12KO). The Problem child pulled away in the last quarter, topping off things for his fans by dropping Taylor with a hard left uppercut in the last round at the U.S. Bank Arena. Broner got what he wanted, a big win over a tough opponent. In a way, Taylor got what he wanted too. He proved his critics wrong by putting on a better showing than they thought possible.

Taylor’s early aggression kept the fight close. He prevented Broner from using his jab. Broner was limited to his “check hooks”, most of which missed or were blocked. Broner and Taylor both landed good body shots, but Broner’s had more mustard on them. Showtime announcer Paulie Malignaggi remarked on the quality of the action, stressing both men were technically sound and demonstrating a lot of skill. The fouls and dirty tactics were held to a minimum, and referee Randy Jarvis held a relatively easy time of it. There were a few warnings here and there for use of the elbow and occasional holding.

In an anticlimactic ending to a bout that had the promise of a war, Matthysse (36-3, 34 KOs) landed a short left hook to the body that sent Ortiz to a knee to catch his breath. The Mexican spit out his mouthpiece and appeared to be working the count until the final split seconds. But referee Benji Esteves halted the contest at the count of 10 despite the fact that Ortiz was on his feet and proceeding to stand up straight.

Lucas Matthysse faces John Molina on Thurman-Diaz card on April 26th

Lucas Matthysse faces John Molina on Thurman-Diaz card on April 26th

Lucas Matthysse (34-3, 32 KO’s) will be taking a tune-up/stay busy fight against lightweight slugger John Molina (27-3, 22 KO’s) on the Keith Thurman vs. Julio Diaz fight card on Showtime at the StubHub Center, in Carson, California, USA. The Matthysse-Molina fight should provide entertainment for boxing fans anxious to see straight slugging, even if the fight does prove to be a mismatch.

Hopefully, the Molina doesn’t fold in one round like he did against Antonio DeMarco in 2012. Matthysse is a bigger puncher than DeMarco, so it’s quite possible we could see Molina drop for the 10 count early in the fight. In that case, hopefully Golden Boy Promotions and Golden Promotions learn from the experience that they can’t match Matthysse against lightweights and expect the fights to be entertaining.

Matthysse: I’m going to take the title back!

matthysse84Lucas Matthysse (34-3, 32 KO’s) isn’t going to let his recent defeat at the hands of WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia get in the way of his continuing to progress to win a world title fight. For Matthysse, he sees this as a bump in the road.

Matthysse’s going to be getting back in the gym and he wants to fight in April or May of this year. He could be trained by Robert Garcia in Oxnard, California. This would enable Matthysse to train side by side with Marcos Maidana. They both come from Argentina. Robert Garcia has done a great job with Maidana’s career and improved his defense as well as his offense. It would be interesting to see what Garcia could do with Matthysse to make him a little more finesse oriented.
