Gonzalez defeats Arce

We may have seen the end of 35-year-old Jorge Arce (64-8, 49 KOs) last Saturday night in his 11th round knockout loss to WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (57-8, 48 KOs) at the Centro de Usos Multiples, Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico. Arce was knocked down three times in the fight.

The referee stopped the fight in the 11th with Arce still on his feet but no longer even making an effort to fight back. Arce was moving in circles and looking like he was just wanted to survive until the final belt.

Gonzalez fought like he was taking it easy on Arce for most of the fight. Rarely did Gonzalez step it up, and each time he did, Arce wound up on the canvas.

By Bill Phanco, Photo: Chris Farina – Top Tank — In a dreadful mismatch, WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-1, 20 KO’s) totally annihilated a smaller and older Jorge Arce (61-7-2, 46 KO’s) in stopping him in the 3rd round in front of a large crowd at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Arce was down three times in the fight and put out of his misery with a hard left hook in the 3rd round that knocked him out.

Arce, 33, was down once in the 1st round and another two times in the 3rd round.In an interview after the fight. Arce said he was retiring. He made a reported $800,000 for the fight.

The first knockdown occurred in the 1st round when Donaire bumped into Arce, sending him to the canvas. The referee blew the call and scored it as a knockdown. Arce did very little in the round and just looked like he was afraid to get hit.

In the 2nd, Arce came out a lot more aggressive and was immediately dropped by a right hand from Donaire. After the knockdown, Arce was a little more aggressive as the took the fight to Donaire, but the action was still largely controlled by Donaire with his left hook, jabs and occasional rights.

By Rob Smith: Boxing fans will be happy to know that WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (30-1, 19 KO’s) is finally stepping it up for his next fight and facing someone still relevant in WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares and WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux. Donaire said he wants to fight one of those guys next.

Arce, 5’4”, is a huge underdog in this fight and few boxing fans believe him capable of beating the faster, stronger, taller and younger Donaire. If Arce is going to win it’s going to be a huge upset because he doesn’t look capable of pulling it off.

by Steve Lopez– Photo: Chris Farina – Top Rank- The stage is set for Saturday’s Jr. Featherweight showdown between highly favorite WBO Champion Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire and Jorge “Travieso” Arce. Wednesday marked the final press conference where fighters addressed the members of the media and to reinforce what to expect in their performances. The co-featured bout will feature Cuba’s up and coming rising star Guillermo Rigondeaux against Thailand’s Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym.

To show boxing’s global presence with fighters and fans, Wednesday’s conference featured a rather interesting mix of fighter backgrounds: Mexico, Cuba, Thailand and the Philippines. It was no surprise that each fighter, with the exception of Donaire, required a translator to get their points across. I had the privilege to attend the conference and captured some visuals and quotes from each fighter:

By Steve Lopez: As the Pacquio-Marquez IV aftermath begins to slowly fade, we have another fight that will portray that Philippines-Mexico rivalry. The two Filipino and Mexican fighters are set to take the center stage this December 15, 2012 in Houston, TX: WBO Jr. Feather Champion Nonito Donaire and challenger Jorge Arce.

On Tuesday, both fighters were scheduled to take part in media/public workouts to begin the fight week festivities. Although neither fighter partook on mitt work or shadow boxing to say the least, both were open to answer many questions from the media. I had the privilege to be part of the workout, capture visuals and ‘Q & A’ transcripts from the day.

Wednesday will be the official Final Press Conference. Coverage and visuals will be provided as well.

By Bill Phanco: WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (30-1, 19 KO’s) faces Jorge Arce (61-6-2, 46 KO’s) in a fight on Saturday night on December 15th at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. The fight will be televised by HBO, and it’s bout that a lot of Donaire’s Filipino fans and Arce’s Mexican fans are really interested in seeing. Arce’s fans think he has a real chance of winning this fight, but neutral boxing fans aren’t giving Arce much of any chance at all.

They see him as a small fighter whose best weight was light flyweight now fighting well above his best weight in going after better paydays at super bantamweight. Arce is kind of like Vic Darchinyan in that respect. Both Darchinyan and Arce were dominant at flyweight but now aren’t the same fighters after moving up to super bantamweight.

Donaire has got the height, reach, youth, and speed and power advantage over Arce. The only thing that Arce has going for him is experience and heart. Can that get him past a fighter as good as Donaire on Saturday? I’d say probably not. Theirs is a chance but it’s probably very slight.

At the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, four division world champion and current WBO/Ring Super Bantamweight Champion Nonito Donaire will defend his titles against one of the Lone Star State’s favorite fighters, “El Travieso” Jorge Arce on December 15 th .

Although most fight fans and boxing scribes would prefer to see the Filipino fighter enter the ring pitted against current 122 pound WBA title holder Guillermo Rigondeaux, they should expect to see the two time Olympic Gold Medalist make an appearance on the fight card, if not in the co-main event of the evening.

But why would the boxing world be treated to Arce vs. Donaire before the critically acclaimed unification bout between Nonito and Rigo?

The relentless aggression of “El Travieso” paired with the athletic counter punching style of “The Filipino Flash” will more than likely be a very entertaining style match up and an overall more enticing event to the casual fight fan.
