Specific attention: Mr. Robert Smith and Mr. Charles Giles.
Dear Mr. Smith and Mr. Giles
As you are fully aware my application for a British Boxing Board of Control licenses was refused, due to a small congenital arachnoid cyst, even though you had letters from Mr. Adrian Williams – Professor of Neurology, Mr. David Beale – eminent Neuro-Radiologist, Mr. Jack Phillips – Consultant Neurosurgeon and Mr. Paul L Grundy – Consultant Neurosurgeon stating that this type of cyst is not unusual and that in their opinion I am fit to box. Fight Report: York Hall, London October 4th – Retzke Crowned Champ, Impressive Victories For Prince, Weaver, Marston
Over the years I’ve been to some of the biggest and most extravagant World Championship events both in America and Europe, I’ve also attended hundreds of small hall shows and can’t deny that I get a buzz from them all, even those with dubious over matching, but I’ve never been emotionally blown away like I was on Friday night.
Why, well for a start Mark Prince’s return was a major factor for my emotional state and I’m sure it was for many others in attendance.
Mark had returned to the fray to raise awareness of, and funds for, the Kiyan Prince foundation – www.kiyan.org – which is a charitable trust that Mark had created in memory of his murdered son Kiyan, a talented footballer.
Another factor was former Big Brother star, Angel McKenzie, finally getting to challenge for a World title here in the UK, after various attempts abroad. Continue reading
For this edition of Up Close and Personal I caught up with former amateur star Iain ‘The Blessed One’ Weaver, ahead of his welcome return to York Hall, where he fights on the Dave Murphy Acourtier Events NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS mega event on Friday, October 4th.
Before we get to the interview itself, as usual here’s a little scene setting and as I’ve already covered his amateur career previously, this will be just about Ian since making the decision to turn pro.
Iain is undoubtedly one of the most talented and exciting young boxers, to have made the transition from the Team GB amateur squad to the pro ranks this year.
After losing out on a London 2012 Olympic spot, due to the weight division he campaigned in being one of those dropped that year, Iain signed with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Sport in July, just as the games were due to begin. Continue reading
Boxing is really beginning to hit the main stream media once more, first there was the Audi RS 6 Avant TV advert featuring Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham boxing BJ Flores, with Tony Weeks refereeing, now the latest video from British rapper Hi Breed features some of the action from the sensational Iain Weaver versus Damian Lawniczak bout, which took place on the Dave Murphy Acourtier Events promoted ‘Thunder & Lightning’ Event at York Hall back in April.
The timing of the release of this latest track ‘Mean’ by Hi Breed featuring Kiki Minaj, is perfectly timed as young Iain makes his second visit of the year to York Hall, in London on Friday, 4th October, where he will be in action, against a yet to be named opponent, at the Dave Murphy Acourtier Events promoted NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS mega fourteen bout show.
The video, which was the brainchild of Royal Flush Entertainment, is a four screen presentation, with one screen featuring highlights from Weaver-Lawniczak whilst the other three screens feature Hi Breed, Kiki Minaj and a bevy of beautiful young women in some very interesting scenarios. This coming Saturday one of the UK’s top amateur stars, European Silver and Commonwealth Boxing Championships Gold medalist, Iain Weaver makes his long awaited professional debut at York Hall in London.
Back in July last year Iain was on the verge of hitting the big time, pro boxing wise, promoter Eddie Hearn had convinced him to sign with his Matchroom Sport concern with the promise of debuting on his September Alexandra Palace mega event, headlined by Darren Barker’s return.
However this failed to materialize, due to the British Boxing Board of Control refusing to license him after his brain scan highlighted a cyst. Continue reading
Following a frustrating few months, outstanding Team GB star Iain Weaver finally makes his most welcome professional debut at York Hall in Bethnal Green on Saturday 27th April, on the Dave Murphy promoted Thunder & Lightning event, headlined by Dean Irish Lightning Byrne versus Jay IOW Assassin Morris International Masters Welterweight title clash.
Weaver, who was an integral part of the Team GB podium squad throughout Rob McCrackens preparations for the London 2012 Olympics, has enjoyed a highly successful amateur career, culminating in both Commonwealth Boxing Championships Gold and European Silver Medals.
Even though he had been enjoying excellent form, in the pre Olympics build up, Weaver unfortunately wasnt selected for a London 2012 slot, losing out to eventual Gold medalist Luke Campbell. Continue reading
2010 Commonwealth Boxing Championships Gold Medalist and European Silver Medalist Iain Weaver has been added to the Dave Murphy promoted ‘Thunder & Lightning’ event, headlined by Dean ‘Irish Lightning’ Byrne versus Jay ‘IOW Assassin’ Morris International Masters Welterweight title clash, at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 27th April.
Weaver, who was a pivotal member of Team GB Podium squad in the build up to the London 2012 Olympic Games, sensationally became the 2009 ABA Champion, with a 19-14 points win over Blain Younis, on his first Senior outing.
The following year Weaver won gold at the Commonwealth Boxing Championships in New Delhi.
On his way to the Gold Medal position, Weaver beat Olympic bronze medalist Bruno Julie, India’s Akhil Kumar and in the final Sri Lanka’s MDK Wanniarachchi.
With the Commonwealth Gold secured next up was the European Championships, which in 2010 were held in Moscow. Continue reading
