Dzinziruk vs. Gonzalez
September 1, 2012 – Puerto Rican slugger, Jonathan “Mantequilla” González (15-0 1, 13 KOs) got a twelve round draw in his strongest test of his career, against former Jr. middleweight World Boxing Organization (WBO) champion, Sergiy “Razor” Dzinziruk (37-1-1, 23 KOs) of the Ukraine, in a meeting that was held in Verona, New York, at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino.
The Judges’ scorecards were 117-111 for González, 115-113 for Dzinziruk and 114-114.
“The fight ended up as a draw, but we feel that we won, and I will continue working harder to keep looking for my dream to become a world champion for my people of Puerto Rico” said Gonzalez, the undefeated, 23 years old fighter from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
At the end of the fight, González had the edge in power shots, 131 to 100.
The co-feature bout was scheduled to take place at 154 pounds and the WBC Continental Americas championship would be on the line but Gonzalez weighed in at 162 pounds and because of missing weight, the fight would only go on if Gonzalez weighed in at 166 pounds on Saturday morning. By Dwight Chittenden: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) made it look easy tonight in halting Poland’s Grzegorz Proksa (28-2, 21 KO’s) in a a 5th round knockout at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino, in Verona, New York. Golovkin knocked the badly overmatched Proksa down three times before the brutal slaughter was ended in the 5th round with Proksa knocked face down on the canvas.
Golovkin put Proksa down in the 1st, 4th and the last time in the 5th. You could tell that the end was near in the 4th round when Golovkin knocked Proksa down with a powerful right hand to the head. Although Proksa was also knocked down in the 1st, but this time he was really hurt and he took punishment for the remainder of the round.
In the 5th round, Golovkin came out like a shark smelling blood in the water, ignoring Proksa’s futile attempts to fight him off with wild shots, Golovkin got Proksa near the ropes and badly hurt him with a big right hand. Proksa, now staggering, was helpless as Golovkin added the finishing shots to the head to put him down face first on the canvas. Proksa gamely got to his feet but he was badly dazed and the referee did the right thing by calling a halt to the fight at 1:11 of the round. Continue reading
VERONA, NY (SEPTEMBER 1, 2012)—Undefeated Puerto Rican Jr. Middleweight Jonathan Gonzalez made his mandated second day weigh-in and his HBO televised co-feature with former World Boxing Organization (WBO) Jr. Middleweight champion Sergei Dzinziruk will go on as scheduled tonight at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino.
The bout was scheduled to take place at 154 pounds and the World Boxing Council (WBC) Continental Americas championship would be on the line but Gonzalez weighed in at 162 pounds and because of missing weight, the fight would only go on if Gonzalez weighed in at 166 pounds.
Gonzalez checked in at 165.2 pounds and the fight will go on as scheduled and will be televised Live on HBO beginning at 9:45 Eastern / Pacific. Continue reading
