Broner vs. Abril

Schaefer working on Broner’s next fight; Abril a possibility

By Jeff Sorby: With the news that WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns will be fighting on January 26th in Glasgow, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is left with Richard Abril (17-3-1, 8 KO’s) as the possible next opponent for WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) to fight on February 16th on HBO in the United States. Schaefer wanted to get Burns to take the fight in a unification bout, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen as Burns’ promoter is already talking about putting him in action on 1/26 instead of letting him fight Broner.

Abril is about as good as Burns, if not better. There’s much difference between those two fighters except that Abril is the far better fighter defensively compared to Burns and he’s got the shoulder roll defense that Floyd Mayweather Jr. uses.

Schaefer said to ESPN “I am going to convince him [Burns] him to go directly to Broner for February 16, but if Burns does not work out then maybe Richard Abril.” Continue reading
