Joey Hernandez beats Winchester and demands to fight Canelo, Molina By Prince Dornu-Leiku – Joey Hernandez claimed a unanimous victory over Jamie Winchester last Friday and immediately declared the big ambition of stepping up for a match-up against WBC 154-pound champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Southpaw Hernandez, claimed a 97-91, 97-91, 96-92 verdict on the judges’ scorecards to improve his record to 23-1-1 (13 KOs) but the man nicknamed Twinkle Fingers, is calling for bigger names and bigger fights on bigger promotions to showcase his world title credentials.

“I felt I won 9 rounds strong and decisive, and landed a lot of power shots. After reviewing the tapes, I feel I could have thrown the jab a little more and couple more combinations but I showed the type of fighter that I am,” Hernandez told East Side Boxing post fight.

He continued: “I’m happy I got the rounds, I felt great in condition and it really paid to have an 8 week camp with Evangelista Cotto. I landed 176 power shots to the head and body, I take my hat off to him (Winchester) in the balls department. I plan not to balloon up and get back quickly. I know my name is in the mix for top fights, I’m just too charismatic and too exciting to stay off national television.”

Pacquiao thinks Hatton is making a mistake in coming back

By Michael Collins: 34-year-old Ricky Hatton will be coming back this Saturday night to face Vyacheslav Senchenko in a scheduled 12 round bout in Manchester, England. Hatton’s former conqueror Manny Pacquiao doesn’t understand why Hatton is coming back after being out of the ring for 3 1/2 years.

Pacquiao picks Cotto to beat Trout

By Rob Smith: For what it’s worth, Manny Pacquiao sees Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO’s) as coming out on top against WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (25-0, 14 KO’s) on December 1st at Madison Square Garden, in New York. Pacquiao knows Cotto pretty well from having trounced him in a 12th round knockout back in 2009.

However, Pacquiao probably doesn’t have clue one about how good Trout is and at this point in Pacquiao’s career he would likely struggle badly and lose to a boxer/slugger like Trout. That would be a very tough fight for Pacquiao at any point in his career, especially now when he seems to have lost his ability to move and fight hard for three minutes of every round.

When asked who he thought would win the Cotto-Trout fight during Tuesday’s telephone conference with the press, Pacquiao said “I think Cotto will win the fight. Not sure by decision or knockout. Better chance for a knockout but not sure.”

It would be definitely good for Pacquiao if Cotto wins because Bob Arum has run out of big names to match him up against and he’s resorting to putting him in rematches. If Cotto loses this fight to Trout then that presumably takes away one of the biggest money fights that Pacquiao can get off the table.

Froch could end up having to face Adonis Stevenson next, not Bute

By Michael Collins: Eddie Hearn, the promoter for IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch, is hoping the International Boxing Federation will allow Froch to temporarily bypass his IBF mandatory challenger Adonis Stevenson in order to try and get a rematch with former IBF champ Lucian Bute. However, it’s unclear whether the IBF will allow Froch to skip the Stevenson bout and it’s also unknown if Bute even wants the Froch rematch right now.

Lessons should be learned – Broner stops DeMarco

By Paul Strauss: By now you know, Adrien “The Problem” Broner 25 (KO 21)-0-0 destroyed Anthony DeMarco 28 (KO 21)-3-0 Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, N.J. Over the course of the seven plus rounds the fight lasted, Tony maybe landed a handful of decent punches. The rest of the fight was all Broner. The Problem child shined in his domination of the WBC lightweight title holder, but it really was more of a gift than something earned.

Unfortunately for DeMarco, he fought a courageous but stupid fight. He gave up his height and reach advantage. He failed to establish his jab and punch in combinations. It wasn’t that Broner took it away, he simply gave it away. More over, when he moved (which wasn’t often), he moved to his left into Broner’s power. Most of the time he failed to establish any kind of range or distance beneficial to him.

He fought more like he was about 5ft tall, rather than 5″10″. He was bent over and immobile. He didn’t move from the waist, and didn’t move his head, and more often than not his gloves were not in the correct position to protect himself or to punch. He seemingly forgot a fighter must know what punching distance is for himself and that of his opponent. Tony would consistently go beyond the necessary distance he needed to land shots, and into the range of Broner’s shots.

Broner too powerful for Burns: Will Ricky move up in weight rather than face Adrien?

By Michael Collins: Last Saturday’s 8th round destruction of WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco by Adrien Broner showed me enough feel that WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns would still little if any chance against the unbeaten Broner and that’s who Burns could end up fighting in early 2013 unless he chooses to move up in weight again. That would be a pity to see Burns move up in weight rather than face Broner.

Froch Destroys Mack; Can “The Cobra” Get Revenge Over Kessler And Ward Next?

by James Slater – Make no mistake, Carl Froch was widely, even unanimously expected to defeat Yusaf Mack last night. “The Cobra,” though, made even shorter work of his over-matched challenger than perhaps anyone predicted. Way too strong, way too powerful and way too accurate for the Philadelphian who had to drop down from light-heavyweight to get his shot at the IBF super-middleweight crown, Froch enjoyed his easiest fight in many a year.

After tough battles with the likes of Mikkel Kessler, Andre Ward and Glen Johnson, Froch was perhaps entitled to a less than arduous evening. And Froch sure enjoyed himself last night, putting on a punch-perfect display before his adoring fans in Nottingham. Dropping Mack early on in the opening round, Froch, now 30-2(22) scored with a left hook. Already it looked like the approx 9,000 fans might go home early.

Froch also dominated the 2nd, although 32-year-old Mack, now 31-5-2(17) did try his best to get into the fight. Come the 2-minute 30 second mark of the 3rd it was all over. Froch, a fine body puncher, let loose downstairs, knocking the wind out of Mack’s sails with a combination. Froch did what a great fighter is supposed to do when matched with a fighter he is expected to beat: he closed the show quickly.

Australian Boxing: Malvern Town Hall Results

By Srithar Visuasam: On Friday night, Melbourne fight fans were entertained by an eight fight card at the Malvern Town Hall, Melbourne, Australia hosted by Peter Maniatis Promotions. The card hosted three title bouts in front of a capacity crowd.

In the main event, unbeaten Michael Zerafa (8-0, 4 KOs) took on David Galvin (4-5-3, 1 KO) for the vacant WBC Asia Council Continental light middleweight title. The fight lived up to its main event billing with Zerafa entertaining the crowd with his thrilling flurries of quick punches, which always looked likely to stop the ever moving forward Galvin in his tracks.

Broner: I’m going to show off more of my skills against DeMarco

(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Rob Smith: Former WBO super middleweight champion Adrien Broner (24-0, 20 KO’s) intends on showcasing a lot more of his boxing skills in this fight compared to his previous ones when he fights for a title against WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco (28-2-1, 21 KO’s) at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Broner, 23, realizes how much more of a threat the 26-year-old DeMarco is compared to the guys that Broner’s been feasting on during his still young four-year pro career and he wants to make sure nothing goes wrong tonight.

Broner said to Yahoo Sports News “DeMarco fought good guys but he hasn’t fought me. You are going to see a totally different Adrien Broner on Saturday night. I am going to be able to show more of my skills.”

For Broner’s sake he better hope he shows more skills because if he clowns around in this fight or if he stays in 1st gear all night long like he’s looked against some of the weak opposition he’s been in with he’ll end up getting knocked out by DeMarco. This guys is powerful and he delivers his big left hand shots from the southpaw stance and that’s going to be a different experience for Broner because he hasn’t been fighting guys with power lately and he’s been facing a lot of southpaws.

Mack sees himself beating Froch tonight

By Michael Collins: Light heavyweight Yusaf Mack (31-4-2, 17 KO’s) looked good at yesterday’s weigh-in despite coming down from 175 lbs to take the fight with IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (29-2, 21 KO’s) in Nottingham, England. Most boxing fans and experts aren’t giving Mack much of a chance at winning this fight but that’s not stopping Mack from feeling he’s got what it takes to upset the 35-year-old Froch. The way Mack sees it he can win this fight if he doesn’t fade like he sometimes does by the midpoint of his fights.
