Which one would beat the other is debatable now and it was then. Cuevas may have fought better opposition really with Espada, Weston, Ranzany, Gray and Shields. Randy made a good showing against Laonard(Who he beat in the amateurs). He looked like he could have gone the distance with Hearns if he hadn’t have gotten that cut which caused the stoppage in a late round, I think the 11th or 12th, and that was a while after the Cuevas fight. I think Cuevas was starting to slide downwards by that time.

All right Pepino. This guy seems to have been a nobody until he won the title, shouldn’t have even been rated with his resume. But I guess the WBA appreciated a champion of Mexico. After getting rated he got beat by Andy Price and apparently was still eligible for a title shot. Angel espada was watching the bout and said ” That’s the guy I want to fight next!” . A big misjudgement as he lost the title to Cuevas and again in two rematches during Pepino’s 4 year reign.
