Real boxing fan(not bandwagoner)

are you people really this stupid? te title of this thread is “fighter of the year” not “best fight of the year” or who was the “most well matched fight” or “toughest challenge” with that being said fighter of the year has to be a fighter who fights the best or defends his titles against the best now if a fighter fights another champion regardless of his decline or not or where hes ranked if he is a champion from another organization then he has to have respect they earned it! so that being said out of all fighters being mentioned which FIGHTER fought and won against the best and yes quantity will favor over a one hit wonder!

Bakie Longta

If we are talking of the whole year best fighter, Donaire is clearly the one.

Posted December 30, 2012 1:14 pm

Right…. Danny Garcia is the fighter of the year. Marquez won and lost.

I will never put Froch on the list he beat a bum in Bute who we all saw look amateurish in his last fight. That says a lot about Ward not Froch when Carl couldn’t even win more than a single round against Ward. Donarie never duked it out with the front runners. Mares and Marques it should be one of them simple. Garcia beat an ol’ Morales what the f… does that prove? Khan’s KO was for real. Vilora deserves mention too.

Great article James. Viva Marquez!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted December 27, 2012 8:45 pm

Froch had two very good stoppage wins this year-he killed the undefeated Bute where he was an underdog and then killed Macks . In my opinion Mack is kinda where all Donaire’s oppenents were maybe or just a lil bit less this year. Mares beat Moreno who is alot better than anyone Donaire fought this year. I think Moreno is a better win than those 4 BS fights Donaire was in this year. Last but not least Marquez not just beating Pacman but knocking him out cold is also better than those four fights that no die hard fan wanted to see Donaire in. I like Donaire and I love how he post his test results online for the fans to see-I really like Donaire I just think the fans would see much better fights with him if he was with Goldenboy-thats who he needs to be with to get those fights cause Top Rank has issues with GB and we’re not going to see them. Once again I like Donaire but I think Froch, Marques and Mares fought much better comp than he did this year.

Posted December 27, 2012 11:06 am

I think Mares off of his one fight this year did better than those 4 very forgetable fights Donaire was in. All Donaire has is Top Rank selling bull crap fights to the fans and y’all buy the bull everytime. Donaire, like Mayweather hardly ever give the fans what they want. With Mayweather the fans only wanted one fight but instead he gave us lil Marquez, washed up Shane, DQ Ortiz and Cotto. Donaire has strayed from Darchinyan rematches even after the dude had became the man again and now he has Mares and Rigo yet he fights 4 fights no one gives a damn about but his clsoe fam & friends yet he should get fighter of the year. I would go with Froch over him-Froch, Mares and Marquez has done better than Donaire has this year-Donaire has the quanity, but they have the quality

…go to you tube and search “Pacquiao style” video…funny stuff!!

Posted December 27, 2012 1:28 am

such a joke that people say donaire should be fighter of the year.

donaire didnt fight the two best in his division (mares and rigondeux).

he fought an over the hill arce who was cashing out before retirement. he fought a joke of a champion in matthebula and looked terrible. he fought nishioka who was cashing out before retirement. and he fought vazquez jr. who is nothing special.

donaire is the next top rank / hbo media hype.

let donaire beat mares and rigo in one year and then he can fight them. until then, just because he is active fighting bums and over the hill, shot fighters it doesnt mean anything.

Posted December 26, 2012 1:51 pm

Sorry but you forgot Amir Khan who has been randomly blood tested every year he’s been a professional. Drugs is the biggest issue in boxing and only Donaire and Khan have done the right thing by voluntarily being randomly blood tested – I wish there were more fighters like these two guys.

MNboxingFAN – Sean

Donaire gets Fighter of the Year. Marquez will get Knock Out of the Year and possibly Round of the Year.

Posted December 26, 2012 12:31 pm

as long as a man keeps throwing hard punches with bad intentions, it can’t be considered a lucky punch…as a matter of fact there are no lucky punches in boxing, it’s just carelessness on the opponents part, you get careless and get tagged…it’s not luck.

Posted December 26, 2012 12:21 pm

donaire surely the fighter of the year, marquez fighter of the month.

Posted December 26, 2012 10:49 am

What lucky punch?? He set that up pefectly and got full power on that right hand… Guess this dude is NOT a fan of picture perfect KO’s??? My how guys standards change depending on who got knocked out!

Posted December 26, 2012 8:55 am

Why Marquez? Because of one lucky punch? Gimme a break…
My choices would be Leo Santa Cruz and Brandon Rios–they fought real fights!

The Greatest

Nonito Donaire is the only boxer on the planet taking random blood and drug testing with VADA, 365 days a year in order to prove he’s a clean athlete. That, along with his in-ring performances, make him Fighter of the Year by a country mile in the steroid-ridden sport of boxing.

terror tim

Like Marquez and won a little change on his knockout but Pac had been slowing down big time. His other fight was one that one one expected him to do anything but dominant. I hesitate to give it to Donaire because he hasn’t made the fights [yes plural] we want to see. How can you be fighter of the year by not making at least one of them? Hopefully he is fighter of the year in 2013. Ward only fought once, sorry have to do more whether it was his fault or not. Froch had a great victory but Mack isn’t really a fight and he falls under Ward who’s victory was more impressive. Guerrero had a good year but was it better than Vilora or Danny Garcia? I don’t think so. I think for me its Vilora. Little guys don’t get the respect but his fights where great and he unified.

Posted December 25, 2012 4:53 pm

,,,Marquez…hands down!!

Posted December 25, 2012 4:34 pm

1. Ward
2. Mares
3. Vilora
4. Marquez
5. Froch

Posted December 25, 2012 2:40 pm

marquez guererro and froch for me. specially froch what a comeback year

Posted December 25, 2012 1:05 pm

Donaire is an AWESOME fighter but he was pretty much expected to prevail in all his contests… Its cool that he fought 4x but the name Manny Pacquiao is that of a modern day boxing LEGEND no matter what his silly detractors say, 4 lineal Championships and wins in a SOLID 7 weight classes, taking out Cotto, Barrera, Morales, ODH, Clottey, Hatton and points wins over Marquez…. The win that Marquez produced over this fighter was EPIC and a historic derailment…. JMM is the man of the hour, at the age of 39 years old… Donaire has years to claim gather accolades…. The old man deserves this

Posted December 25, 2012 9:31 am

Juan Manuel Marquez is the runaway fighter of the year NO ONE has had a bigger win over the past 5 years… He defeated an ATG who was younger via highlight reel KO.. He had to endure some TOUGH shots to get that win and it took him 8 years… Marquez name should be in the dictionary under more than one word, ie persistence, determination, BALLS, GUTS, GRIT…. No one produced a victory of this magnitude JMM deserves the nod…

Posted December 25, 2012 9:25 am

Marquez by a mile, so what if he only had two fights this year, Muhammad Ali was fighter of the year in 1978 and had just two fights, one of which he lost, to Leon Spinks before regaining it in the rematch.

Posted December 25, 2012 7:56 am

the true 122 champ

tell he fight abner mares who i think faught the very best in the division only 2 missing is donaire and rigidoux on his hit list, those guys dont compare, to a moreno, agbeko, perez, and darchynian but donaire did knock out the last one.

Posted December 25, 2012 7:12 am

Marquez had the most impressive WIN SO he’s the Fighter of the Year. I had Ward with his knockout of Dawson until Marquez just Topped him.

Posted December 25, 2012 2:15 am

I would have Mares and Ward ahead of Donaire. I just think their opposition was better. Garcia, Bronner and Froch also had great years. Bronner broke out into the elite level, Froch keeps putting his money where his mouth is and Gracía could be another Mares: they don’t seem to have any one thing that stands out, but in the meantime they beat anybody you put in from of them. Finally, if they had a “rookie of the year” I’d give it to that kid Santa Cruz.

Posted December 25, 2012 1:02 am

Once again Donaire is not the fighter of the year. All his fights where fights he had a slim to no chance of losing and slim left town many moons ago. All his fights where show case fights in which he didn’t look good in any of them but one and that was against Arce. Even his fight against the Japanese guy that wasn’t throwing many punches, Donaire did not look great in. He is not the fighter of the year. I could go with Marquez because of the KO.

Marquez is the obvious choice.

Alberto Medina (@MexPhoneBooth)

I agree with numbers 1 and 2. Danny Garcia is not in the same class as JMM and the Filipino Flash. His upset win over Khan was a “lucky” punch. I don’t think Danny will hold the strao for long. His father, and rightfully so, is his best fan and most outspoken fan. In truth, the young man has many weaknesses and will be exposed in the coming year. Adrian Bronner, on the other hand, is my pick for number 3. He is the heir apparent to “Money” Mayweather as maestro of the Sweet Science.

Posted December 24, 2012 10:31 pm

Fight of the Year is Mike Alvarado vs Bam Bam Rios. KO of the Year is Marquez/Pac. Round of the Year is Round 12 Martinez/Chavez Jr. It’s a tough call for Fighter of the Year between Donaire, Broner and Garcia. Upset of the Year is Bradley/Pac. Mismatch of the Year is Lopez/Alvarez. Robbery of the Year is Adamek over Chambers.
Comeback Fighter of the Year is Malinaggi. Just some of my opinions. There was someone who got robbed worse than Chambers, but I can’t think of them at the moment.
THE ROBBERY OF 2012 WAS Tavoris Cloud vs Gabriel Campillo ..nO doubt ….

Nonito Donaire no question. Anyone who says Marquez is just a newb.

No way should donaire be fighter of the year. He fought subpar comp, on top of that he should not be the Ring Championship holder. To earn that belt he beat the japanese dude whom hadn’t fought in 15 months. I just saw recently someone who had not fought in 9 or 10 months get dropped down in the rankings for not fighting, so how in the heck did he keeps his rankings for 15 months with out fighting anybody. Mares would deserve it, even Marquez could get it just for the KO since he was the underdog again and the way it was delivered.

Posted December 24, 2012 5:35 pm

The Mad Scientist

Abner Mares beat better comp than Nonito in 2012..Agbeko, Morel and Moreno.

Posted December 24, 2012 5:27 pm

The Greatest

No, because any other wins next year will come against over the hill and/or weight drained and/or one dimensional opposition like all of his wins above 135pounds.

Posted December 24, 2012 5:26 pm

This writer has it backwards. How the hell people are picking Marquez fighter of the year only fighting twice and the first fight being an unknown sparring session? Who knows. The way I see it, Marquez gets KO of the year, Nonito gets fighter of the year based on his strong opposition and the fact that he fought that excellent opposition FOUR times!

Posted December 24, 2012 4:32 pm

The Mad Scientist

Alvarado vs Rios was a great fight between to young action fighters who are evenly matched but Pac/Marq are two P4P all time great fighters who are considered highly skilled going at each other in high profile other fight can compete with Pac vs Marq for fight of the year neither,,Marquez takes all the awards with one punch.

Posted December 24, 2012 4:12 pm

I have to say marquez accomplishment should make him fighter of the yr he koed a alltime great pacquia .now if pacquia comes back next yr and koes marquez will he be fighter of the yr?

Posted December 24, 2012 4:06 pm

Marquez with out a shadow of a doubt credit to Donaire for keeping busy but needs to step up class of aponants to be FOTY.

Marquez by far. Unfortunarely, Donaire continues to fight no-hopers. Garcia did well but the second fight with Morales didn’t make sense. After beating Khan, he should have tried to make a fight with Matthysse or Judah.

Posted December 24, 2012 1:31 pm

FOTY was Alvarado vs Rios.

Posted December 24, 2012 1:28 pm

pactards r idiots

Pacquiao should be fighter of the year, his face destroyed jmm’s Gloves…

Posted December 24, 2012 1:20 pm

The Mad Scientist

Marquez takes this award without a doubt..the boxing world don’t care about Donaire’s 4 fights this year or Carl Froch’s vitory over an untested Lucian Bute or Danny Garcia’s ko’s over old Morales and A mere Con..Pac/Marq was a high profile fight between two greats who performed at an elite level in a mega fight, nuff said!

Posted December 24, 2012 12:58 pm

Marquez with out a doubt! The man is a living legend with his ticket stamped for a sure hall of famer!

Posted December 24, 2012 12:11 pm

The Greatest

Amir Khan. He was dominating Garcia with his speed, power and granite chin before being prematurely stopped whilst employing the ‘rope-a-dope’ technique. He then came back from the worst robbery in boxing history to outclass the hardest hitting light welterweight of all time in Carlos Molina before busting him up and stopping him late. Not the Fighter of the Year, he’s the Fighter of the Century without a shadow of a doubt.

David Haye! Ok, just kidding. Marquez achieved quite a bit, and so did Carl Froch, too. True fighters, those two!
Merry x-mas to all @ ESB!

Marquez and garcia both took dangerous fights in which they were the underdogs, scoring unexpectedly brutal knockouts over top competition. They deserve fighter of the year more than anyone
