By the way – Dawson is clearly nothing special, even a bit slow. Dawson has fought an old Ward in Hopkins, without shining. What on earth makes you think that Dawson can handle Ward in Oakland, in drained condition. The only reason for this fight = Ward is Dawsons only money fight. Remember I recognize Ward as a fine technical amateur style boxer.

Posted August 16, 2012 9:05 am

Kessler had the following strenght taken away from him in the Ward Oaklan lie.
He had to travel
He had to live with a referee allowing headbutting and holding
He had to live with the judges
I am outright saying that Ward would have been disqualified had the fight taking place in europe.
The difference is huge -did you see all the cuts on Kesslers face after the fight?
So Kessler comes in to the fight after traveling -finding himself in a fight where he is headbutted clearly and his opponent holds on to him for dear life. Well guess what = Dawson will experience exactly the same.

All in the 40 & over club…Stop it. Chad hasn’t even reached 30 yet.

Posted August 15, 2012 9:04 pm

I don’t think the weight will affect Dawson. He’s still young and it’s a little easier going from 175 to 168 than it is for smaller guys to drop a division. I myself was a very, very trim 170+ and I dropped as low as 159 without much problem, and I’m much older than Dawson. I think Dawson wanted this fight bad, wants to prove he’s the best, and will come in hungry. I think Ward is going to have his hands full.

Posted August 15, 2012 8:32 pm

MK – I have to ask, if Ward was successful in putting some sort of mental jinx or handicap on Kessler, isn’t that Kessler’s fault?

Posted August 15, 2012 3:34 pm

The WAY I see it; Dawson OFFERED to go down to 168lbs and fight Ward. If he had a MANAGER of any salt, that guy wouldn’t have let Dawson say that, they would’ve offered a ‘catch weight’ and Ward would’ve accepted it. Dawson coming into a fight WEAK with Ward IN Oakland is HIS OWN DOING, not WARD’S!

Posted August 15, 2012 9:11 am

Do remember that the Ward vs Dawson fight is exactly the same fight as:
Ward against Kessler -Ward against Green -Ward against Froch – Ward against Abraham. Concerning Abraham decide for yourself if he is not the perfect example of a boxer (limited skills, but insane ko power) whose own promoter and trainer took away all his strenghts. King Abraham was considered heavy favourite to win the super 6 after the JT ko. Now he is up against Stieglitz -a weak fighter in the big picture.
I continue to stretch the message that if Ward travels to europe -win or lose, he will be recognized as a fine fighter. Europe is the only money opportunity for Ward in the future, so think about, why Ward will never travel to europe.

Posted August 15, 2012 8:01 am

The strongest strategy in boxing for promoters -is taking away opponents strenghts.
Make your opponent go up or down in weight.
Make your opponent travel.
Meet your opponent when he is at his weakest.
Understand the worst weaknesses of your opponent.
This is how Andre Ward fights, but do remember that Ward did nothing in pro boxing before he cheated his way to Kesslers belt -using a concept called the big lie in psychology.
Yes Kessler was distracted enough on many levels and very obviously in the Ward Oakland fight -from there on Ward was suddenly seen as the second coming -eventhough he has never fought a topfighter in his best condition. This is why people don’t recognize Andre Ward. Now again we will see the same fight, with Ward in topshape, against a fighter who will show up as weak as never before. Ward by wide decison clearly, but so what?

Ward by decision.

Ok, how ’bout great match up because it’s a logical fight to be made and excellent challenge for both fighters? And I’ll defend great match up with the fight itself because while neither has delivered, what you would call, a fan-friendly fight, I think their styles will match up well, as do their records — two hungry, young, undefeated/near undefeated fighters. They both have something to prove and I think both will go out of their way to deliver. Did I say it’s a great matchup… why yes, I did.

Posted August 14, 2012 8:19 pm

“Old geezers” — Johnson, Tarver and Hopkins? When Dawson beat them they were all forces to be reckoned with. Yes, Dawson didn’t do well against Pascal, but it could have been just an off night or maybe Pascal a style problem for Chad. Either way, don’t count Dawson out — dropping down to 168 to make this fight shows he’s very hungry. Ward is going to have a tough night.

John Titor you said “Dawson beat Hopkins, who beat Jones, who beat Ruiz, who beat Holyfield, who beat Tyson, who beat Holmes, who beat Muhammad f ALI!!! What ever kind of crack you are smoking, yeah … you should stop. It is warping your mind huge time”

Your the one who needs to stop smoking crack! Dawson beat a faded Hopkins who had to wait until Jones was faded to beat him, who beat Ruiz that was not quite as good as the guy that beat Holyfield….stop there for goodness sakes, how can you use that as a example, pure and simple unless Dawson can show the skills he did against Tarver who always comes to fight, I do not know how long Tarver has been on steroids but Chad fought well against him, unless he can do that Ward while he may be boring is also the best 168lb out there will dismantle Chad.

Posted August 14, 2012 12:35 pm

Ward has to stop ducking The Ghost!

Posted August 14, 2012 7:45 am

Great match up?? No, not really. It’s an INTERESTING match-up but it WON’T be a great fight. Ward has recently defeated the better competition. Dawson won’t be facing another “old timer” this time. He looked gassed in a low output/slow non-action fight vs Bhops. Chad might come out ot the gate a bit faster than usual and try to bring it to Ward and force the fight in the early stages. But… Ward will ultimately take over, time Dawson’s jab with rights, get low to get off occasional combos to the body and then head, hold a bit…. enough to win. Dawson’s arms or longer, Ward’s hands will be faster. Dawson might be the stronger fighter in the beginning, Ward will be the stronger fighter down the stretch.

Posted August 14, 2012 7:25 am

Ward by tko! Yes i am calling it now.

Posted August 14, 2012 7:02 am

Basically since 2008, Bad Chad has fought old timers like, Glen Johnson twice,Antonio Tarver twice, and B-Hop twice and he has not looked good beating these old geezers and it showed in the Pascal loss when he finally fought a young boxer. Fighting all of that old competition really hurt Chad. And it`s going to hurt him against Andre Ward.

Posted August 14, 2012 6:58 am

Another thing, when the Super 6 was first announced, everbody thought it was such a great tournament, but after Ward cruised thru it, I hear a lot of people saying Ward hasn’t fought anyone. Give it a break and give Ward his props!

Posted August 14, 2012 2:19 am

It will be a competitive fight with many close rounds, but Ward will probably win 8-9 rounds with a better work rate and cleaner punches landed. Dawson is underestimating Ward because of the size difference, but when the fight progresses, he will discover the intricate puzzle that is Andre Ward. Ward by 117-111 decision.

Dead SEA-Your Boxing acumen remains POOR and ESB changing THIS site won’t change it. I’m sorry. Once you become BRAIN dead there’s nothing that can be done. You’re a lost cause. Such a pity. Your posts are only read for comedy. Your Boxing knowledge is NON existant.

Posted August 14, 2012 1:46 am

ESB has almost killed itself. Same thing happened to Montgomery Ward and Kmart. When you refuse to adapt and give the customer/user what they want then you commit suicide and go out of business. Thats why Apple is successful, they adapt to what the user wants… Bring the old comments section back and you may be resuscitated we DO NOT like the new format…. If not RIP to YOU. GOOD luck to you on your decision.

Andre Ward gets his wins in his back yard but bores me.
Chad Dawson once looked promising, but after watching Pascal make him look like an amatuer,
Dawson was exposed. He looked terrible, totally confused, out of it.
Chad trying to drop to 168 will drain him, slow him, defeat him.
Chad will be gassed and taken apart more round after round.
Andre will carry him until Chad quits on the stool.

Posted August 14, 2012 1:40 am

Well in Ward’s last fight Froch was holding just as much as Ward was. Watch it again. And the only fighter that complained about headbutts was Kessler. Froch didn’t, Green didn’t, Abraham didn’t. Maybe Kessler was the only one it affected because his head movement sucks. If Ward was really pulling a Victor Ortiz every fight. DOn’t you think more people would complain? But I’m using logic of course. You’re just talking outta your ass.

Posted August 14, 2012 1:11 am

@ocelot – I agree w your assessment of this fight. Is it just me, or does this new format at ESB feel doomed?

Posted August 14, 2012 12:30 am

M. Mendoza

Ward will pull out a win but it won’t be his signature fight unless he gets to do lots and lots of holding and then some more holding again like every five seconds or so. Just when that gets a little unnerving, Ward will do a little headbutting which will really take Dawson out of his element.

Like i said before, Ward beats Dawson ya dig

Posted August 13, 2012 11:01 pm

Andre Ward is horrible to watch. In my 30 years of watching boxing, ive never seen a guy noted as one of the best without beating anyone worth a dirty shoe. Wow, he is rated by ring mag as one of the top 10 in the world. What a Joke. This fighter cant Knock out poobutt fighters like bika and green, Ward cant hurt a fighter who stands directly in front of him, Ward only fights at home, Im tryin hard to see what it is about ward that is worth a anything. Well lets hope that he can do something with Dawson who will be the first real fighter he will face worth a darn. Wards record is full of beaten fighters way before him, also how the heck to you become one of the best with out no knock outs or one super fight. JOKE

Posted August 13, 2012 10:35 pm

Ward has to get inside where Dawson is fairly helpless and put him off his game round after round. It won’t be pretty. But it will be effective and enough to get Ward the decision. Also, Ward has the most underrated jab in the sport. If he can get that working, in spite of the reach disadvantage, the night is over for Dawson. That said, Dawson has tons of talent and is doubtless preparing for just such an attack from Ward. If he can use his own jab, reach and height, he can keep Ward on the defensive. Ward can’t jump in like Pascal – he doesn’t have the power to back it up. If Dawson can successfully fight from range, Ward will eat jabs and left hands repeatedly, potentially losing the fight (assuming he doesn’t get an Oakland decision). Ultimately, one, if not The, best match-up pending in boxing.

Posted August 13, 2012 10:16 pm

Very interesting fight. Great match up! Ward should win, but I have a strange feeling Dawson brings his A+ game, more experience against top fighters, and his much longer reach, and wins a squeaker. Dawson earns a close split decision, and Ward demands an immediate rematch.

Posted August 13, 2012 9:31 pm

I agree. Plus, Ward’s speed will be too much for Dawson, who Deep Sea seems to forget lost to GASPS! Jean Pascal.

Ur kidding,p4p? Maby pernell vs chavez but buddy? Buddy. Was a good fighter butnever p4p

Posted August 13, 2012 9:03 pm

Ward wins this fight by using his jab and straight right hand. Ward has to slowly break Dawson down . Work his way inside and control distance. I like Dawson but he doesn’t have the killer instinct. He seems content on cruising threw rounds.

Posted August 13, 2012 8:50 pm

This will be a very tactical fight. Ward will go to Dawson’s body often with the jab. Ward will test Dawson’s endurance. I see a close tough fight but with ward winning a decision.

Posted August 13, 2012 8:44 pm

Andre Ward is who I predict will win this contest. Chad Dawson isn’t in a good position; having to come DOWN in weight. It’s bad enough, when a guy is moving up in weight. Factor in Ward’s spectacular elimination of the opposition in his weight class and Andre’s confidence should be enough to make the night miserable for Chad Dawson. Ward by decision.

Posted August 13, 2012 8:35 pm

The Prince

True boxing fans love fights like this. This fight might be similar to the Whitaker Vs. Mcgirt fights which decided the number one P4P; whitaker won both fights. I see Ward being the better technical fighter, so I see him winning. However, like Mcgirt, Dawson has a really good chance.

Ward fans, do you want to know how it plays out.,,,,,,,,, Ward runs, pitter pats his shots all night, Ward not going to hurt anyone, not going to KO anyone, its going to be the bore tour. Dawson needs a KO to win in Ozkland regardless how well he does. Ward is nobody special and has a resume of poor opposition listed , bums if you will. yea yea I here you,, abe bika miranda green are bums, kessler and froch are b-rated euros, that sums up Ward’s resume. It would be different if he KOed bika, KOed mirnda, KOed green and hurt froch and kessler, but the tale of the story is that ward fights at home to protect himself from the same politics that won him Kessler. Ward sux

Posted August 13, 2012 7:53 pm

I hope Ward wins, but this should be a close competive fight. Unfortunately, it’ll probably a little boring as well…as in no KO’s, no knockdowns, or either fighter being in any real trouble.

Posted August 13, 2012 6:14 pm

mosrt important fight of the year!! winner goes to #2 p4p.

Posted August 13, 2012 5:17 pm

How will it play out? Ward by lopsided, uneventful decision. Dawson had trouble handling the 40 and over trio of Hopkins, Johnson, and Tarver. Ward has fought and more decisively beaten the better competition. Dawson has not shown at any point in his career that he could handle a gifted fighter with the skill set of Ward. Sorry guys, but save your PPV money, this one won’t be worth it.

Dawson has the advantage in power and size, but Ward will negate that with clever tactics. It’ll be more of a chess match than a fight though.

Posted August 13, 2012 3:40 pm

Dawson doesnt have the composure to handle adversity. Ward will put this claim to the test IMO. I think they will be talking about Ward as a top P4P very soon.

Posted August 13, 2012 3:29 pm

I Agree… Ward wins wide decision… some figuring out in the beginning but takes an obvious lead by the middle rounds and wins easily
