Mccall – best chin I can think of – Eubank and Vitali also top rate.

Anonymous : is there really a thing such as a headbutt contest in Canada ? that sounds sick.

Posted November 28, 2012 7:54 pm

Chuvalo had a granite chin as well as an iron jaw. Even after he retired from boxing he won several consecutive annual head butting contests in Canada despite going against much younger guys, many of which were knocked senseless after sampling Chuvalo’s potent headbutts.

I dont understand……. why foreman …. the only man who landed punches agains foreman… was ali and he knocked foreman out foreman did not have a tough jaw

Posted November 28, 2012 6:31 pm

I think the question to be asked is who has the best p4p chin, it all good and well to be a middlweight and take a godd shot from big hitting middleweights but its another thing entirely to be a natural middleweight and move up and take shots from heavyweights, for that I nominate James Toney as no.1 p4p chin

what i meant to say was vitaly was not phased in round 6 and vitaly had all the momentum. vitaly utterly dominated ring generalship the whole fight every round. the dog walking job vitaly put on lennox, the announcers, the tape everything speaks for itself here. after watching vitaly with two good and both fighters fresh in round one and two and vitalys utter domination and then vitalys continued domination through the fight 66% of which he fought with one eye. i dont know guys but i do know one thing. after watching that bout i surmised vitaly was the better the fighter. to me vitaly is the GOAT. i think the tape and everything that happened after the fight just proves who the better man is. vitaly learned after that fight to keep everyone in his range. the rematch youwouldve seen lennox get the beating corrie sanders got. and that was one of the worst beatings i ever seen a man take in the ring. it was so bad larry merchant cried at ringside.

Posted November 28, 2012 2:33 pm

Swedish boxing fan-bahahhahaha! Lennox was outlanded everyround that includes the last 2. Mometum NEVER swung into lennox’s favor in that fight despite vitaly having 50% vision. Watch the fight like u say below. Learn how to watch tape . Nobody, no announcer or analyst thought lennox was gonna win. They called lennox defensless in that fight. Said lennox was hurt multiple times. Said one more big shot from vitaly and lennox was out. None of this was said about vitaly ever. But you can dream up whatever you want. Your obviously not basing this on fight tape. Would you like to disect the rounds together? Go to youtube get a clip of what u are talking about. Nobody holds on for dear life like lennox lewis did in round 2 and then outlands his opponent. Doesn’t make sense. If vitaly was holding on for dear life how was he outlanding lennox? Lol

Posted November 28, 2012 1:19 pm

lewis was the better boxer… but you cant not say lewis won that fight lewis was ready tho go that fight ….vitaly would knock him down in de seven or 8 round

Posted November 28, 2012 12:30 pm

Wach stays on his feet against Vitali and all of a sudden he has one of the greatest chins of all time. lol. Tark you realy are a moron. Wach was out on his feet against Tye Fields. You think every guy who doesnt go down against your man VK is a legend of the sport. Show some flippin neutrality for once. Or just shut up

Posted November 28, 2012 12:13 pm

The best chins ever were Vitali Klitschko, Mariusz Wach, Ike Ibeabuchi, and Oliver McCall. All hit with smashing shots, but never dropped. Chuvalo couldn’t take it as much. He started flagging early in his Foreman and Frazier fights and the referee jumped in and saved him because he obviously didn’t want be in there. He did have that GOAT chin. Chuvalo was also dropped and hurt in a sparring session with 195-pound Amos Johnson.

Posted November 28, 2012 11:34 am

What the Hell does the Chuvalo-Quarry fight have to do with anything? Chuvalo sucked up punishment from a terribly out of shape Quarry, much like he didn’t against Ali. Quarry had slightly more punching power than Ali, but was a very small heavyweight. Quarry was winning easily but was clearly exhausted. He started taking punishment, and wanted out. Quarry went down and got up immediately, took a knee again, and stayed down ‘til 10—and immediately got up. He pulled a Joe Walcott, who got up at 10 a couple times and then argued with the referee. “Why’d you stop it?” … “Because I counted you out you quitting SOB. Quit pretending you wanted to fight.”

Lennox Lewis had not a steady chin in his career but still even in his worst shape of career and unpreperd he took Vitali Klitschko’s very best shots he have ever throwed and never went down. Also Lewis was coming back strongly and in 5th and 6th round, Vitali was the one eating the hard shots (several rocket uppercuts) and in the end of the 6th round he was just seconds from going down but held on for his dare life at Lewis. Vitali had more stamina that night for sure but he was ready to go down and thats the truth. Watch the fight over and over again and the result is that Lewis would have stoped Vitali that night any way.

Jack Dempsey – Its true what you says. But then again, Holmes, Byrd and Frazier all had good chins (sure not the best ones) but I still must give them big credit for being able to take big punches and not give up but like you said, not the best ones.

Bears ,,,Sal.O,, is correct you have no idea of the fight game ,,you think that Ron Lyle would just step in and swing wild at Foreman ,,what are you crazy ..that is call suicide ,, he had to set him up,, in them days they believe in the jab ,,you probably never even seen the fight .

Posted November 28, 2012 12:26 am

Bears,, if you think that the heavyweights from the 70’s were not that good then you should try watching more boxing ,,because you absolutely know nothing about the fight game ..did you not see the boxing Lyle did to hurt Foreman ,,he would step in with the jab then follow with a right ,,they both got to swing wild when they both were hurt and instead of giving up like Tyson or Wladimir they both kept throwing bombs …

Posted November 28, 2012 12:20 am

Lyle, shavers, and foreman were not very good boxers just good tough brute force strikers. Cosell called foreman vs lyle and said “this fight is void of any talent, their just swinging away” them guyshad good power in their era. But their small to todays standards. They were flight footed, wide open, and swung from the rafters. They would be getting blasted this day and age. I’m not one of these guys that thinks the 60s and 70s were the most talented fighters at heavy. Not by a long shot. Juxtapose those guys into the 90s and the klitschko era and they get smoked by the contenders, not just the champs

To Decker ..fighters now a days are bigger and faster and more athletic then fighters from the past ,,But!! that does not mean they are better ,,Certainly they are not more durable ,,you dont have fighters like Basilio or Lamotta or Marciano or Walcott type of fighters that were hard to keep down ,,fighters now a days have very thin skin ,may be its evolution or what ? Look at Wladimir ,every time he gets hit hard he wants to drop,,look at Jorge Linares his skin is like a wet tissue paper ,,look at Andre Berto all muscle but he cant take a punch …

I dont get it all the experts have “Ali ” as one of the top 10 fighters with the strongest jaw and have ” Ali” as perhaps the greatest fighter of all time ..yet on these blogs some people think different ..they have the Klitschkos or Lewis or Tyson as the best ,,yet who in the hell have the Klitschkos fought that were consider great ..Besides Lewis ..Tyson never beat a great fighter just a great light heavy weight Spinks …

Posted November 27, 2012 10:20 pm

Jack Dempsey “..who else in boxing has face so many great punchers .other then ” Ali ” ..”

Answer: top current HWs. Current/recent HWs are bigger and better than ever, with true world comp. This is obvious except to fans living in the past !

Of course Vitali was hurt by the uppercut Lewis threw ,,did you not see the way Vitali walk back to his corner , he wobble back to hie corner ,,I did have Vitali winning the fight but he certainly got hurt ,,,

Posted November 27, 2012 10:12 pm

Jack Dempsey

To Bears one is saying Vitali cant take a punch ,,But we really dont know ..we know he is very durable and has a good chin ,,but he is hard to hit ,,,Good for him ,,,but what great punchers has he fought besides Sanders ,,,Look at Roy Jones he looked indestructible ,till he got caught by Tarvar ..What if Ernie Shavers would have tag Vitali right on the chin what would you think would have happen ,,,

Yes !! ” Ali ” got knock down by Henry Cooper ..But “Ali ” was only 20 yrs old at that time and Cooper threw the hook of his life time ..who else in boxing has face so many great punchers .other then ” Ali ” ..

To Unbiased Dane .. ” Ali ” was knock down by a Frazier left hook alright ,but it was due more from a accumulation of punches after 15 rounds ,,or did you forget that they used to fight for 15 rounds ,,Frazier was a very powerful , thick leg non stop fighting machine ,,a Henry Armstrong type of fighter ,that would wear big guys down …

You rate boxer’s jaws by who they fight and react when they get hit by a power puncher ..Like” Ali ” he fought the hardest punchers ever in the history of boxing in the Heavy weights ,,, ,”,Hagler” face the hardest punchers ever in the history of boxing in the middle weights ,,, “David Tua” did have a very good chin but then he never truly fought an all time great puncher …

Posted November 27, 2012 8:17 pm

Jack Dempsey

Vitali Klitschko can’t really be rated as having an iron jaw ..because he has not face all time great punchers and because his style of fighting is not to get hit at all ..Which is good for him but bad on the ratings ,,thats why HBO does not show his fights ..non the less he is good at not getting hit ,,but when he did get hit by a good puncher he was obviously in serious trouble ..the Lewis upper cut had him in big time trouble ,,,

Posted November 27, 2012 8:05 pm

Jack Dempsey

to Swedish Boxing fan ….Joe Frazier ,,,Chris Byrd and Larry Holmes did not have all time iron jaws ,,,Frazier was a tough ,,determine ,with lots of heart and guts ,but he was drop by Bonavena twice and drop by Foreman 6 times and hurt a number of other times ,,Holmes was a great talent and determine to win type of fighter but his jaw was not made of granite ,,he was hurt very bad a number of times ,,Byrd was stop a total of 4 times ,,he survive other times by being clever and smart he was a Jimmy Young type of fighter ….

You have 2 give it to vitaly klitschko. In practically 50 pro heavy bouts and two times fighting 11 bouts a year vitaly klitschko has never even had a standing 8 count and he has never been knocked down or out. Sanders did hit vitaly flush with power shots more than once. Hbo replays these shots in slow motion. Lennox hit vitaly etc. People are saying cassius clay below. NO WAY! Clay got dropped by 180 pound cooper. Sorry but clay is low on the list

Well fighters with hard chins I think of are the obvious ones. George Foreman, Oliver McCall, Evander Holyfield, Ray Mercer, Larry Holmes, Joe Frazier, Chris Byrd (yes in a good level) , Julio Cesar Chavez, Nicolay Valuev, James Toney and many more ones to name but no out there its hard to say how it is with many of the top ones but I must say that I was big time impressed on heavyweight contender Mariusz Wach effort filled with hearth and iron against the hard hitting and dominant champion Wladimir Klitschko with Wach taking over 220 punches and still was steady to not go down to the canvas and made all 12 rounds of punishment so he is one to name for sure.

Vital’s chin is not that strong to compare him to other legendary tough jaws ,,he was drop by Sanders but thats ok ,,every one gets drop here and there ,,but he has never really face a lot of big punchers and has never really been hit that much ,,which is good for him ,,Lewis obviously hurt him bad …

Larry Holmes did not have a strong enough jaw to be rated among the best chins .. he was drop by ” Shavers ” and by “Snipes ” was hurt by “Weaver ” and hurt by ” Tim Witherspoon” and ko by Tyson ,,Larry Holmes was a great fighter but he won due to his big heart and resilience to be defeated ,,great fighter though …

Some of the toughest jaws in boxing history are Jake LaMotta ,,George Chuvalo ,, Randell “Tex” Cobb ,, Cesar Chavez Sr,, Salvador Sanchez ,he took heavy bombs from Lopez and from Gomez and from Nelson and never bother him ,,, and of course Marvin Hagler ,,he face all the top punchers and beat them ..these are just a few ,,there are more ,,,,
