Wladimir started as a pro in 1996 so there was plenty of time for a fight between the two. And why should he pull a revenge act against Lennox when Vitali was promised an rematch and then was all over the place to make Lennox fight him and not rush into retirement. that said after the loss to Sanders Wlad must have been in a very bad bad state mentally, he got a new trainer and had to inprove his defense and so, but no one knows if he would have taken the offer to fight Lennox.

Jury is still out on Wilder. Take him into round 7 and he will fold.
Plus he does not like to be hit and has a China Chin. He is going to be starched soon. No ticky, no washy, but starchy yes.

Leon Spinks? Terry Norris? Ray Leonard? John Ruiz? Buster Douglas? you might as well have rounded off this list with Gatti and Julian Jackson. they also had some memorable KO wins v. less-vulnerable competition. the common denominator between all of these fighters is that none are consensus ATGs. not even leonard who didn’t even crack the 40-fight threshold but did set a record for pouty, post-loss retirementS. anyway, i have no idea how praise of these fighters is supposed to balance your rabid criticism of consensus ATGs Ali, Hagler, and Robinson but i’m certain you have a sage and clever rationale that doesN’T justify your praise or condemnation of any of the previously-named fighters.

TARK, in the case of Leon Spinks, Terry Norris, SRL etc. it is back-handed praise in order for you to tear into the likes of Hagler and Ali like a Hyena on a carcass. You seem to smell blood and go for the kill, without regard for anyone’s reputation or circumstances.

TARK, at long last you are naming guys pre 95 that you rate! But I will pull your card on Terry Norris, as you always prefix Norris’ name with china-chinned. Please do not deny this. I have read several posts where you berate Norris, who possibly fought the most title fights at Lt Middle.

Plus Ezzard Charles… He beat Archie Moore 3 times without a loss and was one of the greatest LHW’s of all time… Right up until about his 3rd fight with Joe Walcott… The early symptoms of ALS—which eventually took Charles’ life a young age—took it’s toll on Charles and he lost to an aging Walcott who he beat twice earlier.. The Charles of the late 40’s was one of the best ever.

Anonymous says…, “No TARK, I was talking about old school fighters in general. There is not ONE fighter who fought before 1995 that you have ever given praise to.”

I sure as Hell gave praise to Ralph Jones — for coming off 5 straight losses to beat the living trash out of Sugar Ray Robinson.

I sure as Hell gave praise to Leon Spinks, who had only 6 pro wins but beat the Hell out of Muhammad Ali anyway.

I sure as Hell gave praise to Mike McCallum.. MM was so good Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, and Duran ducked him forever.

I sure as Hell gave praise to Terry Norris. Terrible Terry boxed the ears off Sugar Ray Leonard and mopped the floor with him.

I sure as Hell gave praise to Sugar Ray Leonard. Not that many welterweights from his time could come off a 3-year-layoff with no warm-up fights — and box Marv Hagler’s face off the way he did.

I give praise to Lennox Lewis… He scared the bejabbers out of Riddick Bowe, who trashed his title belt rather than get KO’d by Lewis..

I sure as Hell give praise to John Ruiz.. He floored a prime Holyfield and beat him.

I also give praise to Riddick Bowe.. He took a ton of punches to his wide open face — but still managed to beat the crap out of little Holyfeild twice.

I sure as Hell give credit to Buster Douglas.. He was knocked out several times, so he was a 42-1 underdog — but he still manged to give Mike Tyson a boxing lesson for 10 rounds before Knocking TFO of him, ending the embarrassingly one-sided affair.

Plus I always gave praise to Eder Jofre… Salvador Sanchez… Jack Johnson… Joe Louis… Carlos Monzon… Rodrigo Valdez… Gene Tunney… and many other ATG’s who were among the GOAT.

Tark, had Mike Tyson landed the uppercut on Wilder that he deposited on Douglas, Wilder would be sleeping. As it was Douglas barely got up from that wicked uppercut. Some say he was on cocaine and that is why he was able to get up. Dunno, BUT, the jury is still out on this guy Deon Wilder. We might call him Slappy Wilder after this. Slappy Birdlegs Wilder.

I don’t understand people saying that Scott was not warmed up? He spent 90 seconds running round the ring, like he was auditioning for Dancing With The Stars.
Heck, the reason he couldn’t get up after that long hook was because he was knackered from all the running he did!!!

No TARK, I was talking about old school fighters in general. There is not ONE fighter who fought before 1995 that you have ever given praise to. You have torn all their achievements down, but now you say Wlad at 39 is getting old, when you can’t see that fighters regularly fought umpteen times a year in the times of SRR, who you have trashed like a spoilt child. If Wlad loses to Fury he will be a laughing stock. Plain and simple. But, good try, you getting in his age, when in all your other posts you call out Hagler for losing to SRL at 32, despite him being in his 66th pro fight and undergone countless wars to get there. Wlad has seldom been tested in his entire career, so there will hardly be any wear and tear on him and we have moved on more than 30 years since the days of Hagler, where improvements in all areas of sports mean that a man can go on like Wlad to late 30s and into their 40s like Vitali at Heavy.
You know I was talking about the lighter weights.
There has never been any period in boxing where my Heavyweights fought hundreds of times in their careers so don’t be a smart 8ss TARK.
So, in your words with Wlad fighting am and pro 100s of times, Joe come he couldn’t cope with Corey Sanders, how come he couldn’t cope with Lamon Brewster or Ross Purrity, STOPPED by all three and yet you dare to pour scorn on SRR?
you’re a joker TARK.

“He was pushed down and never really down on the floor.. He was squatting the whole time the count was on.. He was clearly up on his feet before the count of ten, which was never even uttered.”

Actually Tark, Chisora hit Scott with an looping overhand right and as Scott dropped to the canvas, he got tangled up with Chisora on the way. All Derek did was pull himself out of the tangle, hitting Scott with a right to the body as he did so. But down is down, and Scott took a knee and stayed there until the ref counted to “nine”, then Scott stood up. No idea why the ref stopped the fight though. Just the way Scott stood up–fast and strong–it was clear that he was ready to fight on.

Hmmm, maybe the ref could only count to nine. Maybe it was because it was a British ref?

….”Many with over 100 and sometimes 200 fights could be spent by the time they were 30-34.”

WOW… That’s GREAT!!! What Heavyweight Champion was that????

Posted March 18, 2014 9:01 am

TARK

Oh WOW… Multiple times a month… That’s how Joe Frazier racked up 30-some pro fights.

Wladimir has MORE professional AND amateur fights than Ali, Frazier, Marciano, Louis, Lewis, Liston, Patterson, etc… He won the Olympic Heavyweight Gold Medal, and beat two (2) Olympic Heavyweight Champions. He would have beaten 4 if the lazy Audley Harrison and Lennox Lewis fought him.

Vitali had 47 pro fights, 210 amateur fights, and 36 pro Kick-Boxing matches.. That’s almost 300 fights. Freakin’ amazing.

Oh, dear! TARK has given himself an OUT, now with Wlad. TARK writes Wlad will be 39 by the time he faces Wilder, but he can’t bring himself to admit that fighters of the old school era and even 30 years ago, who fought multiple times a month, many with over 100 and sometimes 200 fights could be spent by the time they were 30-34. Today, being 40 years old is more like being 30 years old. Compare photos of sportsmen in their 30s today to those in the 70s and 80s. It’s crystal clear TARK.
No OUTS, no excuses and stop hedging your bets.

Posted March 18, 2014 6:32 am

Deontay’s next fight will probably be very tough… Stiverne will be the champ. He’s a very serious dude who knows Deontay has never really been hit hard since his amateur days.

If Deontay gets past Stiverne, Wladimir will be 39 before their fight happens. That will certainly be a mitigating factor in how that fight plays out. Age slows everyone.

Scott got starched with a hook to the temple, it did not look like a hard shot, I mean was I seeing things? I watched the fight, if Wilder hits that hard then his next fights are gonna be easy paydays.

TARK

Idiot Ernie wrote.., “The two times Scott fought anyone with a name he was stopped.”

Glazkov has a name.. He’s the undefeated Olympian who just wasted Tomasz Adamek.. Glazkov caught Scott with maybe 20 good punches in 10 rounds, so that “draw” was really generous considering he was outpunched 2 to 1.

Chisora has a name.. Scott wasn’t stopped there either.. Scott was up 4 rounds to 1 according to the Brittish commentators. He was pushed down and never really down on the floor.. He was squatting the whole time the count was on.. He was clearly up on his feet before the count of ten, which was never even uttered.

Scott fought three names so far… Wilder only three names total if you include busted ass Audley Harrison.

Scott was never the right type of boxer to “test” Wilder…….even though some thought that Scott was good enough to put Wilder through his paces……I was never of that opinion. – TK

Ring General

Piss off Harry, the fight wasnt fixed. Malik was clearly hurt from the temple shot.

Posted March 17, 2014 4:43 pm

Harry

You people will fall for anything. Actually, if you slow the fight right down and zoom in on Wilder’s face you can clearly see him saying to Scott “left hook, right hand, okay?”. That’s when Scott winks and nods, and seems to mutter “yeah okay, but not too hard, okay, just like we agreed?”. Wilder then winks back at him with a knowing grin just before he throws the punches.

If you didn’t see all that I don’t know whether you’re blind or just retarted.

The only genuine KO I’ve ever seen, that I can be sure was 100% real, was when Mayweather KO’d Big Show with those brass knuckles. Now THAT was a REAL fight!

Moreover, I PREDICTED it, because I AM the greatest fight prophet EVER born!

Posted March 17, 2014 4:32 pm

KL

Tark……..I was quoting Harry about his view that the Haye vs Harrison fight was fixed!!!

Posted March 17, 2014 4:06 pm

KL

TARK, we don’t always agree…….but I’m of the same opinion on you about Wilder.
Many aren’t giving Wilder any credit, and seem very quick to jump on the “it’s a fix” bandwagon.
I don’t happen to think it was fixed, in fact even before the fight I fought that Scott would fold pretty quickly, and this was purely on the basis of his last fight with Chisora……. Scot got caught by a glancing blow from Chisora and whilst I think the ref should have given the chance to continue Scott did look as if he was hurt.
So logic to me said if Scott can get hurt by a glancing blow off a smaller guy who has moderate but not huge punching power then he won’t last too long when hit by Wilder…… physically a much bigger man than Chisora.
The other thing about Scott like Boystov is that he seems to lack any fire or ambition to be heavyweight champ.
Something that Tyson Fury seems to have, a bit of fire and determination.
If it had been Tyson Fury in their with Wilder, and Fury was felled by a similar left to the ear you could bet your bottom dollar that Fury would have used every sinew in his body to get to his feet again……..with Scott……it was more like…..I can’t be bothered, I’ll get beat anyway even if I do get up”.
Scott was never the right type of boxer to “test” Wilder…….even though some thought that Scott was good enough to put Wilder through his paces……I was never of that opinion.
Wilder won’t get any credit from some until he beats Stiverne
& then Wlad………but even then I can see that some will claim that Stiverne was never that good or that Wlad has aged quickly overnight.
Even if someone takes Wilder beyond 8 rounds, Wilder will get criticized by some that he couldn’t KO the opponent much faster.
I would be curious to know from the Wilder critics who exactly Wilder should face and beat before they drop their cries of “fraud” or “I’m not convinced”
would beating Fury do it……or perhaps Pulev or Povetkin?

Posted March 17, 2014 4:04 pm

Die Siener

The Wilder fight was a tank job. The analysts looked like total twits once it had been shown in slow mo a few times. Scott took a dive and one wonders how many of the other 30 victims took dives. Wilder remains an enigma and he has been matched very skillfully.

Posted March 17, 2014 3:57 pm

TARK

OK… When you quote somebody use quotation marks… That way everyone knows right away it’s not you talking.

Posted March 17, 2014 3:53 pm

TARK

KL…, Give me a break man.. Haye is 10 times the boxer and puncher Harrison was.. That was a much bigger mismatch than Haye-Chisora by 10,000,000 miles.

No need to fix that fight.. Harrison should have gone out in the first round.. The only reason he didn’t was Haye bet a huge amount of money on himself to KO Harrison in the 3rd round.. Audley tried like Hell to get through the 3rd.

And that’s a legal bet… Although it shouldn’t be… You should never allowed to bet on your own fights, even if you bet on yourself… With that caliber opponent, you can pretty much pick the round you’re going to knock him out in — and it’s going to be a non-event fight up until then.

Posted March 17, 2014 3:46 pm

KL

I very strongly suspect that e.g. Haye-Harrison was fixed too (on the replay you can even see Haye nodding to Audley and saying “now” before he lands the shots which finished it), but I suppose at least you can say Harrison took a few hard punches.- Harry.

Harry you crack me up….. sure there are probably a number of “fixed” matches…….just as their are fixed player incidences in team sports especially with the advent of spread betting…………BUT those that claim that on the replay they can see evidence of Haye saying “now” proves it was a fix is laughable!
If boxers and promoters are going to “fix” fights you can be sure as hell that they have already worked out what is going to happen WITHOUT resorting to saying “NOW” or resorting to winking!
Harry even if Haye says “Now”………..how can you be sure Haye isn’t saying “NOW I got you”?
Sorry Harry your evidence of fix is wafer thin at best.

Posted March 17, 2014 3:37 pm

TARK

OK… We know some people aren’t going to give Wilder credit for anything until he takes somebody into the 8th round and smashes the Hell out of him.

Scott was supposed to go some rounds, but he got caught with a freakish shot in the temple, with the index knuckle.

Liakhovich was supposed to be able to give Wilder some rounds, but he was caught with a freak right hook above the ear and went spazmodic… Wilder looks for the KO… That is all he knows.

So far… But that will change.

Deontay still needs to get his baptism, and it’s coming. Some people have no patience and are quick to dismiss any new heavyweight talent — mostly because it happens to be 2014 instead of 1975… But then, Larry Holmes got more negative brick-bats thrown at him in the mid to late 1970’s than any boxer I’ve ever seen in my life.

Three opponents who either held the Heavyweight Championship, fought for the Heavyweight Champioinship, or were beating somebody who fought for the Heavyweight Championship after 5 rounds—who Deontay Wilder KO’d within 90 seconds, were: Sergei Liakhovich… Audley Harrison… and Malik Scott.

OK… That’s not an impressive list yet.

The list is growing… It’s not that impressive right now. Give Wilder at least 5 more fights before you call him a washout..

Wladimir, Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis, Mercer, McCall, and about anybody else you can name, suffered embarrassing losses… So if Deontay loses a fight, don’t write him off.

Perhaps Scott could have a career selling popcorn, wearing that brown paper bag he had on at the weigh in? He’d have to remember to take it often regularly though: all that weight on his head could easily discombobulate him.

Man! Scottie is such a softie, I thought the fight would have lasted a bit longer.

Clap-clap-clap! Great win Deontay Wilder, great win. I mean a nice KO and getting the right to fight Stiverne or Chris Arreola for the WBC world title belt BUT winning the right by stopping Malic Scott was not an great achivement.

From the beginning there was never any positive respons to this but now its done and we move forward, still this doesen’t prove much to fans and critics.

Yeah Harry that Lewis combo on Rahman was a thing of beauty, that right hand was just nasty.

“Doubt the fight was fixed. The Left Hook landed right on the temple.”

He got *tapped* on the temple. There was no real power in that shot. It was thrown just to set up the right hand, which mainly landed on the glove.

If that’s all it takes to KO him, he’d better be careful walking through doorways in case he bumps the side of his head on the door frame.

It was a lucky punch, Scott didn’t see it lol

“Gutless Scott. But not Wilders fault.”

If it weren’t for the fact that they’re good friends, and supposedly regularly spar together, I might agree. But what happened, together with these facts (and the fact that Wilders paid no attention to whether or not Scott would get back to his feet) suggests to me they were in on it together, and that it was indeed fixed.

“Ring General” my arse. I’d be willing to put money on it that you’ve never been in a boxing ring in your life.

If you want to be reminded of what that left hook-right hand combination looks and sounds like when it *really* lands at heavyweight, put “Lennox Lewis vs Hasim Rahman BRUTAL KO” into Youtube.

Put a sock in it Harry. The fight was not fixed

AP had never been down in his life. Got knocked down by Wlad by a similar left “swipe”. BUT he got up and fought. I feel Scott got caught by a punch he didn’t see by a big man, big puncher and QUIT right there. I think he most certainly could have gotten up but showed up beaten before the bell. No heart. We actually see this all the time but usually it doesn’t look this bad. Gutless Scott. But not Wilders fault. His next fight are reputed great chins and fighters who will fight. We will see.

Bottom line about Wilder-Scott:

Scott took a dive. Some of Tyson’s opponents (e.g. Bruce Seldon and Clifford Etienne) did the same. Whether they were paid to do it, or just took the money but had no intention of taking any punches, I don’t know, but it’s theft either way.

Both fighters should have their purses withheld and there should be an official inquiry. If you watch Wilder, you’ll see that he doesn’t even look back to check if Scott makes it back onto his feet. Given that they are friends, it seems to me that they were both in on it (i.e. it was fixed).

I very strongly suspect that e.g. Haye-Harrison was fixed too (on the replay you can even see Haye nodding to Audley and saying “now” before he lands the shots which finished it), but I suppose at least you can say Harrison took a few hard punches. Scott didn’t even do that.

But however it’s done, it’s absolutely corrupt and it should be criminal investigations into these things, just like when there’s match fixing in football. They are stealing ordinary boxing fans’ money and making a fortune for themselves (can’t remember how much Haye and Harrison both walked away with, but it was into the millions of pounds).

Absolutely disgraceful.

sounds like every time there is a heavyweight fight next day most fans are laughing wonder why.

Wow. The WWE invades boxing. Wilder and Scott was a total joke. Purses should be withheld pending an inquiry. It is physically impossible to knock someone out with a phantom punch. Another black eye for boxing without even landing a punch. Why don’t we set up a rematch with Chris Areola as the guest referee for gawd sake.

“scott vs wilder looked fixed scott never landed a single punch”

Did he even *throw* one??

He hardly received any either. I’ve been whacked round the head by my grandmother with more power.

Perhaps you yanks should do a rubbish remake of Vic and Bob (just as you make rubbish remakes of most of our comedies), with Scott playing Bob: “Vic I’ve fallen”.

Put “Vic I’ve fallen” into Youtube if you don’t know what I’m talking about. Then compare how Scott went down.

“It seems everyone missed the temple shot left hook. That’s what did it.”

Don’t talk crap, please. There was no real power in that punch, and these guys are supposed to be friends who regularly spar together.

This was Tyson-Seldon all over again, or Tyson-Etienne, only worse. Scott should have his purse stripped from him. He had no intention of fighting. What he did is theft, and those who paid to watch deserve better.

Good article. Good observations. Garcia lost that fight and there’s no two ways about it. Wilder is still a mystery. A slap of a left and a short right to the gloves and his opponent goes down and stays down! What? Regarding the decision to the Garcia fight, Paulie’s words said it all, “…it’s a shame that the judges missed a good fight.”

Kneegro Pls!

Worst dive ever….never seen a dude get knocked out by a punch to the forearm lol…..love Juanma, but I’m not so sure he’s back. Ponce looked like he could have gone on. Never heard from Herrera before, but he sure had danny’s head popping back all night with that weak ass Jab. Even the crowd seemed relieved Danny got the decision. Fact is, if you go to La Isla, you need to knockout the other guy, just ask Salido, when he was beating Juanma like a redheaded step child, but still loosing the fight in the cards. Golden Boy really messed up with putting Danny with Herrera, dude is one of them types that will make you look bad, or at least that’s what he did last nite.

Great win for Juanma, unfortunately it may give him confidence to step up and take more beatings. He seems to be showing signs of dain bramage recently, hopefully he will go out in style with this win, but I doubt it…
