And btw, yes, EVERYONE still expects Floyd “to trade” with Canelo on fight night. It’s called boxing.

I had to respond to this on Boxing is not trading that just fighting Boxing is the are of hitting and not being hit. So, there are no perfect boxers out there, but Floyd, Pernell, and Pep came pretty close.

Mayweather is a 147lber who could fight at the 140 level if he cuts down. Canelo is a 154 lber who comes in near the 170lb limit. why would mayweather fight this guy at a 154 lbs. It wouldn’t make sense. And, canelo is still going to come in at a near 168lbs so mayweather has no advantage. U guys are already making excuses if mayweather wins. I say if because I am a huge mayweather fan, but this time I truly believe thsi will be the passing of the torch. Canelo is no slouch, he’s big, he looks as if he punches hard, and i think he is a lot faster hand speed than people give him credit for, so by no means is this a cake walk for either of them. Good luck to both men!

Ellerbe did not say “axed”! Once I watched the video and heard that he pronounced the word properly, I knew that it was a desperately bias article that lost any credit that I may have given it. Pathetic.

Def the most boring article I have ever read. Well partially read. Couldn’t even get through it. I actually fell asleep.

If you ask me, if Canelo wins, it’s not an upset. He just have the enough tools to dismantle Floyd. BUT BUT BUT FMJ is too skilled too, i still see FMJ going the distance bia SD and with a rematch.

I will watch the fight the following weekend. Whats the difference.

Floyd….the catchweight KING…….pac has nothing on him as far as that is concerned. Floyd takes the cake, bar none. Remember all you Floyd jock riders…’s a catchweight fight whether it’s Floyd adjusting his weight or Floyd making his opponent adjust to a different weight. This Floyd dude…what an A-hole!!!!

TOO BAD haters, He shouldnt have signed the contract if he could not make the weight. Hell, I hope Canelo take the penalty, come in at 154, so I can watch Mayweather still win the fight. LOL

Had Ward, who is just as big a whiny hypocrite as Floyd, conceded just one or two pounds in weight at the negotiating table he could’ve picked up all Chad’s belts.

But, you know…

”Problem is Floyd doesn’t get tired so, and we’ve seen Canelo fade in fights before. And having to take off that extra two pounds is.. You know, people think it’s just two pounds but when you already struggling to make ’54 that extra two pounds is a lot. And
he’s going to put on a lot of weight but he’s not going to be able to put on the right kind of weight just in 24 hours. So he’s gonna feel the fact that he’s, you know, stripped his body, cutting his muscles to get to 152”

“I would never want to put a fighter in a position where he’s not comfortable. I want a guy when he’s at his best. If he’s at his best at 154 and he’s strong and he’s solid, then that’s the fight we’re fighting at. I walk around at 150, but at the end of the day – skills pay the bills…. Give me the guys where they are comfortable at their weight so there are no excuses.”

Te Tumbo, Pac came up the traditional catch-weight style of challenging bigger guys but once established there, he fought these bigger guys without catchweights such as Mosley and Clottey.

Floyd has been ranked and champion at jr middle for a while now

“When Floyd beats him on Sept. 14, he’ll still be a jr. middleweight. Even if he outweighs Mayweather by as much as 20 lbs.”

Of course when Floyd wins, Canelo size won’t be so important to you, will it mbuyisell? After all what will you have to moan about then?

Posted August 30, 2013 11:47 am

I want to make something clear:

I pointed out that Ellerbe said “axed” because I expected that certain people would call me out and jump on my back for what they perceived as a typographical error, and for no other reason. I was quoting statements made by Leonard Ellerbe so I wanted to make sure I quoted him correctly. Unfortunately I still made an error: I forgot to mention that Ellerbe also said “…on the record.”

Some of you guys, like mbuyisell and happyboy and nameless, gripe and whine just to gripe and whine. They also attack me just to do it and look for every opportunity to do so. Because they don’t have anything better to say or do And true to form, happyboy pops up out of nowhere with his derogatory one liner, mbuyisell flings his ignorant “crap” around the room. I expect nameless to appear any moment to remind me that he thinks I’m a know-it-all and an a-hole.

Point facts, you can drivel and whine all you want but it is what it is. The fact is that Alvarez fights fights as a jr. middleweight. Call it anything else you like. He’s a jr. middleweight champion too. When Floyd beats him on Sept. 14, he’ll still be a jr. middleweight. Even if he outweighs Mayweather by as much as 20 lbs.

JWALES, i’m incredulous that you didn’t include Punkuiao* in that list of fighters notorious for “temporarily bending the rules, overlooking dangerous situations, racketeering the rankings, redefining rules, using sneaky contracts, etc..etc.” Team Punkuiao* has sunk to unprecedented depths with all of those practice

Posted August 30, 2013 11:24 am

If the officials help one cheat by by temporarily bending the rules, overlooking dangerous situations, racketeering the rankings, redefining rules, using sneaky contracts, etc..etc.. it’s still cheating. Like I’ve said so many times, Floyd, Canelo, and Chavez Jr. are all coddled franchises and their lobbyists help them get away with things other fighters dont.

Posted August 30, 2013 11:18 am

Floyd has no problem passing up big money and never has. Again he admits that he likes easy money. Canelo knew this when Floyd let him quit his undercard agreements for the Guerrero fight, which indeed caused Floyd to have relatively low viewership. Likewise, Floyd ducked huge money against Pacman and Margarito.

flash knock down

I don’t care what is said before the contracts are signed . Canelo and his team did not have to take this fight at 154 lbs. That is Canelo’s team fault ,and now it’s a huge problem that Canelo will not be able to over come. Canelo is fighting the biggest fight of his life against the best fighter in the world, fighting him in his home town and coming in under weight. Canelo will be in trouble after the first round Floyd is going to give him a real boxing lesson. Canelo will come into the ring around 174 lbs he will be slow and will tire quickly. Let this be a lesson to all fighters find your best fighting weight and stay there. Mayweather by knockout in the 7th round.

Posted August 30, 2013 10:12 am

Hildago point facts, you can write 5 pages of crap still won’t make into a fact. Canelo should be fighting people his own size. Just like I said about Chavez the Goofball JR, perhaps he needs rehab before a fight.

Posted August 30, 2013 10:12 am

“Who F-IN CARES? Canelo bent over to give up his 154 pound belts at a catch weight of 152.”

Can’t disagree with this Old Yank. I don’t know what Canelo or his management team were thinking. Floyd has a six-fight contract with ShowTime, over a three-year-period, for big money. During that period of time Floyd is expected to perform and to bring home the bacon. So Floyd needs the big fights. A bout with Canelo is one of them, it’s a super fight.

Canelo is universally recognized as one of the best boxers in the world–in his weight division– at this time, and he’s certainly one of the biggest draws. Period. So why would they feel like they had to make the catchweight “concession” in order to make a fight with Floyd? Because Team Mayweather made them think they did–this ain’t an insult. Floyd is not only an expert inside the ring, he’s an expert outside of it and has managed to surround himself with others who are also experts in various facets of the boxing game. Nothing about Alvarez is as expert as that about Mayweather. Floyd just proved that.

All Team Canelo had to do was sit tight (Easy thing to say, but much harder to do) and refuse to budge on the weight issue. Floyd needs big fights. Not only is Alvarez a very logical opponent for Floyd, with the exception of a bout with Manny Pacquiao, I don’t think Floyd will find another opponent that has the ability to suck $$$ through the gates like Floyd does.

This fight was going to happen sooner or later. Sooner it is. But it will be at Team Canelo’s expense. For Floyd, the 152lb. catchweight requirement is the icing on the cake.

And if anyone doesn’t think the extra two pounds is important, like mbuyisell said, they’re “moronic.”

Posted August 30, 2013 9:24 am

” So it’s all good when Canelo gets to fight JWW and WW but when he has to lose a measly 2 pounds everyone cries foul. Fickle you blorry haters, that’s what you are. Most for you are just moronic. Floyd should fight someone 2 weight classes above their intended weight-bout? I don’t want this fight it’s gonna be a farce. Floyd wins by moving haters will still expect him to trade with a LHW on fight-nite Hildago you’ve passed being an idiot, there’s no help for your kind out there. Good luck.”

You deserve a response from me, Mbuyisell.

When Floyd was receiving xylocaine injections in his hands, some fans and experts cried foul. Others cried fair because the use of xylocaine was legal in Nevada. When Floyd cheated on his weight against Marquez, some fans and experts, and a lot of pundits cried foul. Others cried fair because Team Mayweather and GBP managed to get Marquez to sign a last-minute revised contract that allowed Mayweather to break weight–for a substantial monetary penalty. When Floyd defeated Victor Ortiz by KO some fans and experts cried foul claiming Mayweather won by sucker punch. Others cried fair claiming it was a legal KO because Ref Cortez had ordered the two to resume boxing (after the headbutt fiasco). Still others cried fair because they felt Victor “deserved” it. They thought it was fair payback for Ortiz’s intentional headbutt.

Same controversies have arisen and been ongoing over fighters like Canelo and Chavez Jr. Here are two guys that are naturally much bigger than most of their opponents in the weight division they fight in. Yet they continually make weight for their fights, only to end up being significantly bigger than their opponents by fight night, outweighing them by as much as 20-25 lbs. Now, some cry foul because they claim these guys are preying on “smaller” opponents and that they are fighting in a weight class that they shouldn’t be in. Some even cry “cheater!” But, it’s legal! Unless they blow some contractual agreement regarding weight, they are legally and legitimately fighting in a specific weight class. Xylocaine was legal. Floyd took advantage of that. Stepping into the ring weighing 20-25 lbs. more than their opponent is legal. Canelo and Chavez take advantage of that.

So here you are crying foul: ” Floyd should fight someone 2 weight classes above their intended weight-bout?” False. And no Floyd shouldn’t. And that’s not happening. Even if the fight was at 154, that wouldn’t be happening. Canelo legally fights as a jr. middleweight. He always has. He doesn’t use PEDs, he’s never cheated on his weight. If Floyd chooses to fight in the jr. middleweight division, he’s serving up the food on his own plate. No one is forcing it down his throat. Floyd himself claimed Cotto came into the ring weighing 168 lb. for his fight with Mayweather. That’s 18-19 pounds more than Floyd weighed on fight night. Did you have a problem with that? Did you even know that?

So. Quick recap for emotional you: Floyd will not be fighting a “LHW” on fight night. He won’t even be fighting a super middleweight. He won’t be fighting a middleweight. He’ll be fighting a jr. middleweight who has agreed to fight at a catchweight. It just so happens that this LEGAL jr. middleweight naturally rehydrates to a much heavier weight. And like Floyd he takes advantage of every asset that he has at his disposal. It’s a time-old practice in boxing.

And btw, yes, EVERYONE still expects Floyd “to trade” with Canelo on fight night. It’s called boxing.

Posted August 30, 2013 9:03 am

Any fighter that wants to can demand a catchweight if they bring enough money to the table but the difference will be the record books saying “World Champion in 5 weight divisions” or “World Champion in 5 weight divisions*”
with the ifs and buts in the small print.

Not only that but the flomos and crony capitalists are willfully forgetting that Oscar was not actually the lineal champ because he was beat by Trinidad. Not only that but he got a gift decision against lineal champ Pernell Whitiker

Posted August 30, 2013 7:26 am

Ya gotta be a hater not to see it. Floyd says he’s the true Jr. middleweight champ, has fought there twice, and has now put his Jr. middleweight title on the line yet he suddenly gets the privilege of a catchweight.

Posted August 30, 2013 7:15 am

Who F-IN CARES? Canelo bent over to give up his 154 pound belts at a catch weight of 152. A CHAMPION simply asked if they would be kind enough to use Vaseline! Indeed Ellerbe is more right than wrong no matter how you slice it!

Floyd Mayweather Senior is not part of the negotiating team that is the job of Al Haymon and Leonard Ellerbe. All this proves is the ineptitude of team Canelo. They could have had the fight at the limit of 154 pounds by standing their ground but they did not. Canelo has enogh trouble making 154 pounds a fact know to Team Mayweather. The greatest ineptitude is taking the fight now as Canelo chances would be better a year from now or later.

I agree with the last statement,if Mayweather’s team never thought that 2lb would make a difference they wouldn’t have asked for it, really though if Floyd was so great he would have fought Canelo at 154, if Floyd wins he’s left himself open for people to say he fought a drained fighter.

Posted August 30, 2013 4:27 am

Haimat how does Ellerbe lose credibility? Promoters are like lawyers whoever is paying them will be defended, how heinous the crime could be.

Posted August 30, 2013 4:21 am

Both sides are playing games if you really want to be honest about the situation. Just as this article is saying ELLERBE and Company is playing mind games; so has GBP. First off; they are the ones who had their scouters out there throwing around info that the Mayweather fightw with Guerrero didn’t sell a Million; before that they pulled Canelo off the May 4th card to try and show Floyd up. Basically they were playing a game of one way or the other Floyd; your going to give us what we want and that’s a fight with our boy Canelo. He is only getting this fight because of his fan base. It’s all about the DOLLARS at the end of the day.

Who gives a crap Canelo should be fighting Quillins, GGGs or Martinezs of this world. But hate for Floyd is so blinding that people use emotions instead of their heads. Please name 7 of Canelo previous fights and tell me in what weight were his foes suited? So it’s all good when Canelo gets to fight JWW and WW but when he has to lose a measly 2 pounds everyone cries foul. Fickle you blorry haters, that’s what you are. Most for you are just moronic. Floyd is the lineal World Champion at 147… Oscar… Mosley… Forrest… Mayorga… Spinks… Judah… Baldomir… Floyd.

After Mosley destroyed Cheato and Floyd whipped Mosley he took care of the last pretender… Now you have Bradley-Marquez with the winner NOT to fight Floyd by popular demand… The fans what Canelo… Matthysse… Pacquiao… Garcia… and Broner… If Khan can beat Alexander they’ll want that one in the UK for 50-0

Posted August 30, 2013 2:29 am

Anyway, it just shows that I am a better manager than Al Hayman for I actually would have made Floyd about a half-billion by now and there wouldnt have been many questions about his legacy either.

And after Baldomir “actually” lost to Clottey but got a gift

Posted August 29, 2013 11:39 pm

Wait a minute he won the welter from from Baldoimir

Posted August 29, 2013 11:34 pm

That is not opinion that is fact. Oscar had the lineal championship, he lost it to Mosley who lost it to Forrest who lost it to Mayorga who lost it to Spinks who lost it to Juday who lost it to Boldomire who then last it to Floyd

Posted August 29, 2013 11:34 pm

I will say he only fought Oscar and Cotto for money but Oscar had a good record at 154 and Cotto was on a good run at 154.

Posted August 29, 2013 11:32 pm

Yeah Floyd presently has one welter title from lil Hatton and one Jr. Middle title from ol Cotto

You’re so correct JWales….Alvarez is certainly going to fight a paper champ!!

Posted August 29, 2013 11:00 pm

For some reason I thought his fight against Mosley was jr Middle but anyway he’s fighting paper champs because even you have to admit that he avoids the best at both weights. Thats fine but quit helping cronycapitalism tell the world he’s the p4p king

Yeah “look who he’s fought at 154” Hoya and Cotto because he knows the can of whoopass only last so long.

I mean Miguelcheato was allowed to weigh in “two” whole mornings before his fight against Malignaggi

Posted August 29, 2013 10:43 pm

Like I said he has only fought twice at 154 about to be 3 times. He wasn’t running from anybody at 147. He fought Oscar which helped him become the PPV king he is today, fought Cotto and doing outstanding numbers and now fighting the champion. He isn’t running from anybody. After winning this title he is going back to welter

Posted August 29, 2013 10:41 pm

Speaking of catchweight advantages, Floyd Maycheater had a good one against Marquez and still cheated by coming in heavy. Yes Oscar and Ellerbe used all the same promotional propaganda back then. In other words, no one gave a shat about Marquez.

Speaking of weight cheats, the powers that be also allowed Miguelcheato Cotto to weigh-in the “morning” before his fight against Malignaggi. That way Miguelcheato Cotto was given a lot more time to rehydrate and thus crush the face bones of Malignaggi.

Posted August 29, 2013 10:31 pm

Wrong Peeg, Floyd went from welter in 2006 to Jr middle in 2007 to welter, in 2009 to JR. Middle in 2010 to Welter in 2011 to Jr middle in 2012 to welter in 2013 and now back to catchweight jr. middle against Alvarez.

Can’t be running back and forth when he has only fought there 3 times. Not to mention look who he has fought

Boxing Machine, I don’t know who you are calling an idiot but that doesn’t really matter. However, if you will provide me with a link to the video in which Canelo is “CALLING FLOYD OUT FOR A CATCHWEIGHT OF 150lbs” I’d be more than eager to view it.

But before you look for that video please consider the following excerpt from a June 25, 2013 article on the website by Scott Christ, “Mayweather vs Canelo: Oscar De La Hoya feels catchweight will make Alvarez faster.”

Here’s the first paragraph from that article:

“Despite Canelo Alvarez openly stating that the 152-pound catchweight for his fight with Floyd Mayweather on September 14 was not his idea and something he did only as a concession to Mayweather in order to make the fight actually happen, promoter Oscar De La Hoya is hoping to spin the weight as an advantage to Alvarez, saying it will make the 23-year-old junior middleweight titlist faster.”

Oh and sometimes he just retires for a stint

Posted August 29, 2013 9:35 pm

Floyd runs back and forth from 147 to 154 on a regular basis and in order to escape the heat and actually the big money fights because his team likes “easy money”.

This isn’t news. Double talk has been going on for years in this camp. They are trying not to back track on the catch weight BS that Pac was getting flack for. Catch weight was a big part of Jr’s alleged challenge to Wright 10yrs(?) ago. Wright even agreed to the weight then the challenge was dropped. Canelo should weigh in at 154. The fight won’t be cancelled(too much $$ involved) & Canelo won’t be forced to forfeit a title as long as he is under 154. Jr’s fights are mostly about the show before the fight anyway.
