Rick – you cant be serious right? First of all the fight should have been stopped in the 7th round. Also you say that Cintrton got robbed, but as far as I can remember event though Martinez fought poorly, every one felt he won. would you post links were they claim Cintron got robbed so we can read this.

let’s see(?): following his loss and one-year suspension to Shane, Margarito collected one warm-up win, which resulted in his TX Showdown v. Pacquiao* at a catchweight. what “every fight” and “massive beatings” are you referring too? or is your memory overlapping eras and getting timelines all fk’d-up once again?

swamp gas

there is merit in virtually every comment, and THAT’s why this is a good fight. The
questions will probably be answered decisively. A boring techincial match ending in a SD or
Draw may leave it unclear, but chances are a clear winner will emerge, and Chavez will either raise or fall dramatically. may the best man win.

Rick

I mean the fight that went 12 rounds and they robbed Cintron!

Posted September 14, 2012 6:44 am

ImJustSayin

Agree totally and that is going to be his down fall. He thinks his chin can take anything, it can just not ALL DAY LONG.

Posted September 14, 2012 6:06 am

ImJustSayin

You mean the fight that Cintron actually got Koed in teh 7th and claimed he got head butted. Yeah I remember that fight.

Posted September 14, 2012 6:05 am

ImJustSayin

Jr is game and does have a good chin, but Martinez is just a class ahead. And I think that the belief of having a good chin is what Roach and Jr are betting on. Note that all of Roachs fighets are either expected to be able to take shots or make you miss (ala Toney). Thats why Khan has been problematic ( cant take shots and cant slip shots). But Martinez is going to PUNISH this kid. I really feel sorry for him in some way because he is way over his head. His only hope is plodding away trying to corner Martinez and pound him. He will take 3 shots to give one all night and will get cleaned out. I just hope the dont let this kid take too much punishment just because he is the son of the great one. I hope they dont see it as a shame to allow him to quit, because Martinez is going to hut this kid bad. Roach talks about setting traps. Cmon Freddie, we are talking about Jr. he has never fought that way and he wont fight that way.

Rick

Does anyone remember the draw Martinez had with Cintron? Not a very impressive fight for Martinez!

PRIMO

We all know Martinez is going to run but the guy has done so much trash talking that if he wants to “honor” the sport, as he claims, he’s going to need to back up his trash. I think his over the top trash talking should make him stand and trade if he has the balls. At that point Chavez’ constant pressure will begin to take effect unless he feels Chavez’ power and turns into a ballerina. Bottom line I see Chavez vs. Taylor reincarnated, although I believe Taylor had waaaaay more heart than Martinez. We’ll see if Martinez steps into the ring with a tutu ready to dance or a pair of trunks.

The Mad Scientist

I guess the majority of these cats will be tuning in to the Chavez/Martinez fight not to watch a competitive fight but in hopes of witnessing Chavez Jr taking a brutal beating because most of them already convinced themselves Chavez isn’t and never will be any good to become a celebrated champion unless he cheats..whatta bunch of sore losers sad mofo’s you are..so if Chavez Jr wins he still gets no respect or props from all the insecure whiners..instead they’ll reach into their bag of excuses and pull out their conspiracy theories to downplay a possible Jr victory if the fight don’t unfold like they would like..”WAR CHAVEZ JR!”

olly

martinez hits chavez jr clean once and it is lights out ,chavez jr is a bit to proud of his chin!!!!

danny

martinez by decision . chavez is still a work in progress if he wants to be

WTF?

Biggest upsets of the year were Josesito vs Ortiz and Danny Garcia KO’ing Khan.. and none of those guys out weighed their opponents by 20+lbs..

Actually, “strength” can, has, and does win fights. A fighter who has a stronger mental makeup, greater physical strength, and greater durability, heart, and courage can beat a fighter who has greater skills simply by wearing down his opponent.

Don Quixote

lt’s a well written article. What you should do is take a night course in English to see if that helps. I would doubt it will, as you’d need more than that….

TARK

This author writes.., “Many thought Manny was foolish in trying to beat a monster like the unusually large welterweight Margarito, fully expecting Antonio to pound him into oblivion.” … “Many” did NOT “fully expect” that. A few people who don’t know Boxing might have had such thoughts but Pac was a huge favorite. Anyone who saw what happened to Cheato in every fight since he’s been without his plaster casts knew he was in for another massive beating such as Mosley gave him.

1-2

Watched the Andy Lee fight again and he still has the amateur style of scoring for points and never loading up. Jr didnt respect his punching power and had at least 15 lbs on him and could walk Lee down. I doubt this will happen with Martinez. I see Jr chasing Martinez and get tagged by hard shots and get frustrated. Should be an easy UD or late stoppage for Martinez.

Posted September 13, 2012 9:54 pm

old guy

Look out for Chavez uppercuts on the inside- brutal. That is, if he can corner Martinez long enough…….

Posted September 13, 2012 9:26 pm

old guy

I think Martinez is in real trouble in this one. He better get on his bike and look for in and out stings.

Posted September 13, 2012 9:14 pm

UJelly?

Would be very surprised if Jr could KO Martinez in any round, to be honest. The guy doesn’t have a great deal of pop in his punches so it’d have to be on attrition if anything… and if that was the case it’d more likely be a stoppage with Martinez exhausted on his feet (or not coming out of his corner in some round). Though even that would surprise me coz Martinez isn’t exactly lacking in stamina.

te tumbo

i’ve analyzed the list of Martinez opponents on previous threads and reached the same conclusion: Big F’n Deal. the highlights remain defeating Pavlik in the throes of substance abuse, K’ingTFO of Williams (who was overrated by the same guys who are overrating Martinez today) and Losing to Margarito. this doesn’t make Martinez an ATG. in fact,, defeating Jr. wont either. conversely, Jr. has top-5-P4P status to gain by defeating Martinez and his timing couldn’t be better. Jr. by KO any round . . . unless Martinez runs for his life during the final rounds.

Ghetto Thug

Martinez first round kayo over Williams??

Martinez has the better stamina…that is CLEAR!! Chavez couldn’t stop a fading Rubio who was there to be hit, and just when you think Martinez is “fading”, he comes back strong and scores KO’s. Chavez is NOT a “boxer”, he’s a pressure fighter who relies on his pure strength to overwhelm his opponents…but then again, look at his opponents were..Lee? he’s a string bean who’s been worn down by FAR lesser fighters (McEwan had him out on his feet), Manfredo? He’s been overwhelmed by EVERYONE, even a faded Jeff Lacy. Who else? Zbik hung in there and he wasn’t worthy of fighting Martinez, but was good enough for Chavez. Don’t get me wrong, Chavez is coming to fight, but Martinez is just a whole different animal than what Chavez is used to fighting. I believe ALL Chavez has is “strength”, but “strength” doesn’t win fights, SKILLS does.

IMO, all the “KO” talk is trash. i think Martinez is too smart to be completely deluded by his own hype and Jr. is just playing along to get along. they’re both capable but to simply come out Bombing from the opening bell doesn’t seem likely. Jr. needs to start out by mastering his range and making Martinez flinch and pay every time he comes within range. afterwards, he gradually ups the pressure and dominating the middle rounds. Jr. has to make Martinez pay. in damage or stamina. preferably Both. unlike previous opponents, Jr. is forewarned by plenty of video footage featuring Martinez’s fight-game. he should be harder to hit and/or prepared with stinging counters. i’m expecting a pretty good scrap and if Jr. prevails, it will be the biggest upset of the year.

Walter Van Geel

Although Chavez jr. has made a lot of headway in the past 2 years, he is not in Martinez’s class and will be soundly beaten, probably even stopped.
