Pulev does not have anywhere near close to the power Wlad has. He will not KO/tko Thompson period, let alone 9,10,or 11 round. The only thing Pulev can prove is the validity of his chin. Thompson was mixing it up the whole fight with Wlad both times. Wlad has KO’d most less than 10-11 rounds when they ran the whole time. Thompson is real and he doesn’t run. He’s not a fighter that gets worn out inside the distance and Pulev has only 1/4 Wlad’s power.

Contender #45

Thompson needs a KO to win in Germany and thats what he is gonna get. Pulev has bad experiences of southpaws. Lost most of his fight as an amateur against southpaws. Check Pulev vs Walker. Pulev´s face was a total mess after that fight and he was winning almost every round. Pulev has No KO power. No killer instinct. Thomson by TKO in late rounds.

Posted August 23, 2013 8:17 am

The longer it goes the weaker TT gets. Look at the two Wlad fights, KO’s in the later rounds. Pulev takes TT in round 9 or 10. TKO

Pulev will have no doubt studied Thompsons fights as well. He will need to improve and become comfortable fighting inside is going to be something that he knows he will have to do to win by dec. or stoppage. If his instinct is to back out and stay outside I just don’t see him having a possibility of pulling it off.

Posted August 22, 2013 10:49 pm

I don’t think he was slowing down because of age in te second fight. I think he knew he was fighting a glass jaw and he knew his opportunity would come. And if need be he could just go and do it. He was not stressing getting to him because he knew and had the confidence. Did you see him smiling in the ring before the fight and even as tey were fighting? He wasn’t just having a good day, he knew what the outcome was going to be. I’m sure he’s been a big fan of Pulev fights and has studied him well and will know how to expend himself and his energy when the time comes.

Kid Blast

Hmm. Are you saying Tony is a ROBO–it?

Posted August 22, 2013 7:02 pm

@Kib Blast

you maybe right but the longer it goes the slower the tiger becomes. He was so slow in the second Price fight and I think this will be key advantage to Pulev, who is very fast for a HW of his size.

Pulev will eventually club him into submission but he lacks clean KO power. However, if he can hurt TT early, he can win by quick mugging because that’s when Tony is most vulnerable. The longer it goes, the stronger TT might get.

I`ll take a Pulev UD.

I like Thompson, he is a good underrated guy, but he was living off chances Price was throwing at him.

A measured Pulev I think will just keep edging him out and build a clean lead, but not end in a KO since Thompson is canny enough to survive if he wants.

Tony’s wife set for a double hip replacement after this one. Thompson by UD.

Posted August 21, 2013 10:36 pm

Pratt the Barbarian

I see Kubrat with a TKO in round 9 over TT. Or 10, because Kubrat is going to wear out the old man. Pulev punches hard enough to TKO TT. TT will feel all 41 years old at the end of this one. Pulev moves on to face Wlad for a Title shot, but he will not be able to best the Champ, Wlad.

Thompsons wife will need a new hip if he wins.

As for AP — In all KP is a slight cut above AP I would say.
AP has good skills and brings an impressive amateur resume that includes an Olympic Gold medal. But he’s not a huge hitter, he lacks conditioning and he lacks good head movement.
Against MH he repeatedly ducked VERY low to avoid blows, that was pretty annoying.

Posted August 21, 2013 3:54 pm

TT will when by late TKO Tony will take him to deep and drown him…

I respectfully disagree. If TT wins, then only by UD.

Right now, pulev is jack of all trades, but master to none. OK power, but not great. Good jab, but not great. Good footwork, but not great. Sure he can enhance every aspect in the near future, but as he is ight now, we wont even touch Wlad.

Posted August 21, 2013 10:31 am

KP is a solid fighter with good skills. He’s smart, he has heart, good hand speed, a great jab, good stamina, he’s always in shape.
His performance against the two top 20 HW’s AD and AU was quite impressive! I like his aggressively style.
And what I really love about KP is his coolness in the ring — this guy is so confident and cool! I must admit though that I cannot be really objective when it comes to KP, I’ve a weakness for him.
But TT is a great boxer and very hard to fight.

Neil (Pomy)

Pulev’s power is OK too (dont believe some of the posters below), his chin seems good, and he can box a bit. Pulev has been looking quite impressive.

Neil (Pomy)

Pulev by late stoppage. Thompson did great against Price and I under-estimated him both times when he fought him …. but I have seen Pulev a few times now and I am impressed. Price was still an untested prospect when Thompson exposed him …. Pulev has been tested and rightly belongs in the top 10. It is a good match up and I respect Thompson …. but it is Pulev for me. Pulev is one of the best contenders out there at heavyweight.

Posted August 21, 2013 9:49 am

Just took Thompson at the fantastic odds of 4/1!! European bookmakers always seem to underestimate him!!!

Povetkin vs Pulev…who wins??

Posted August 21, 2013 8:17 am

Pulev is more like Chagaev than Povetkin. Tiger by UD

Posted August 21, 2013 8:12 am

Joseph Herron

He’s very much like Povetkin…minus the power. Sasha has a much better punch and is also a better combination puncher than Pulev.

But they are both athletic Heavyweights and both have very fast hands.

I don’t know if it’s because of the work he did with Teddy Atlas, but Povetkin also fights better on the inside. Pulev doesn’t seem to be able to let his hands go on the inside, he merely elects to tie up his opponents. This is going to be a real problem when he faces Thompson.

Because of Pulev’s undefeated mentality, i see the fight going more rounds but eventually looking like Thompson/Harris. Sugar Moe had faster hands than Thompson and very good technical skills, but couldn’t deal with Thompson’s steady pressure and ability to fight on the inside.

Anyone who hasn’t seen that fight should watch it and check out the style match up…closely resembles this one on Saturday.

Posted August 21, 2013 8:04 am

That brings up another point. The hype of Povetkin slays me. I watched Eddie Chambers slap the pi$$ outta him over 12 and grind his face up. He’s gonna get demo’d by Wlad.

Posted August 21, 2013 7:00 am

kubrat pulev tko in 6 rds…thompsons gonna eat sum serious jab

Posted August 21, 2013 3:16 am

Joseph Herron

i have to agree with Dionysus on this one…I like Thompson in this fight by KO in about the 8th or 9th round.

Most people who face Tony think he’s a left handed fighter. While he fights out of the southpaw stance, his power is in his right hook…it’s a punch that most of Tony’s opponents just don’t see coming from that odd angle.

Where the separation will take place in this fight, will be when Pulev goes in to clinch Tony. Like most European fighters who have a deep amateur pedigree but limited professional resume, Pulev doesn’t fight on the inside proficiently.

What makes Thompson so deceptively effective, is that he has the size and reach to work well on the outside, but can also shorten up his punches to fight proficiently on the inside.

This will be the difference in the fight.

Tony also doesn’t load up on his punches and throws in combination, unlike most heavyweight fighters. Pulev isn’t an exceptionally busy fighter.

If Pulev had power, I might actually favor the very relaxed and confident, undefeated fighter. But the talented Bulgarian just doesn’t have the crack in his shot to keep Thompson off of him.

Thompson TKO 9 over Pulev

Posted August 21, 2013 2:47 am

one and two

Pulev will take this and will dominate. Also i have seen pulev throw some nice right hands. He is a good around fighter, because in this article it spunds like he only has a jab

Posted August 21, 2013 2:34 am

Just one more point… Pulev beat Walker by decision in 12. Walker has 11 losses , 7 by KO. Adamek KO’d Walker, Banks KO’d Walker, Manuel Quezeda KO’d Walker, and TJ wilson Ko’d Walker in the first round. So I don’t think Pulev is bringing the proverbial “boomstick” to the ring. No KO from Pulev happening in this one.

Posted August 21, 2013 1:33 am

I can see either guy getting decked in this one but I have to take Thompson with a decision win.

Posted August 21, 2013 1:23 am

Pratt, I don’t understand what significance Vitali Klitschko has in this? Neither guy has fought him. Are you merely talking about age? If so, Tony seems to have done well recently and overall with the exception being Wlad. Wlad is pretty untouchable for everyone. Also, it’s fair to say that Pulev’s chin is better than that of Price. However, I don’t know that Pulev punches as hard and i would actually doubt it.

UD for pulev is he has the stuff or if he is a hype job UD or KO for Thompson. Either was it is a great test for a fight with Wlad. It’s basically the best of Europe vs the best of the USA. Great fight.

Posted August 20, 2013 11:00 pm

………………………….PULEV TKO over THOMPSON………………………….

Posted August 20, 2013 10:56 pm

Kubrat the Bulgarian will win this one. He is going to out work the old 41 year old. At 41 Thompson is not any way near the 40 of Vitali, so Pulev is going to work him and pummel him. And Pulev is no way close to Price at all. Pulev can take a punch and Pulev punches hard enough to TKO Tony!! Pulev wins….

Posted August 20, 2013 10:54 pm

Thompson’s job is to see if Pulev has the tools to challenge Wlad, if he doesn’t then Thompson will have a well earned additional shot at Wlad. The best fighter wins, the best fighter fights Wlad. Wlad’s one of my faves but he fights kinda boring. Why penalize Tony Thompson though? The guy is doing well late in his career! God bless him man.

Posted August 20, 2013 10:02 pm

What is this…Fight Night Champion? You keep knocking a guy out yet somehow he keeps getting title shots?! It would be utterly ridiculous if Thompson won and Wladimir had to waste his time to keep a strap. I don’t care if Thompson gets robbed …..just let Wlad flatten someone else!

Fight Aficionado

And since folks are already making predictions mine is a UD for Pulev.

Posted August 20, 2013 7:36 pm

Fight Aficionado

If Pulev is for real he’ll win a decision. If not he’ll lose by whatever. Now that Thompson proved himself against Price he’ll either be a top echelon gatekeeper or eke out another title shot. Frankly I hope Pulev wins so we have another viable contender for Wlad. Thompson already got parked twice, so while he was game till the end I don’t want to see that again.

Posted August 20, 2013 7:35 pm

Pulev is a boxer without a big punch, Price punches one hell of a lot harder than Pulev! Tony Thompson by TKO8

Posted August 20, 2013 7:18 pm

I disagree, Pulev is too tough for Thompson. Too young and hungry for Tony. He has a chin of steel for gosh sakes he took all Freight Train could give him. He can handle the big guys and he is ambidextrous, meaning he can fight left or right at a whim. He is going to confuse Thompson and TKO him in round 9. Thompson will gas out and Pulev will rough him up. Kubrat the Bulgarian moves on to face Wladimir. Thompson will show his age of 41 in this fight, because Kubrat is going to work him in to being 42……..
KUBRAT the BULGARIAN retires Thompson.

Posted August 20, 2013 6:34 pm

Thompson has been in with Wlad 2 times and seems to get better with age. He’s taller and has a reach advantage and has more pro rounds in the bag. His inside scrap is much more beneficial as the last guy said. Pulev wants to stay outside and throw shots. Good luck to Pulev if he wants to try to fight from the outside with a reach deficit. Thompson’s chin isn’t bad and Pulev is not what I would call a banger; he’s a worker that gets workman-like wins. Thompson will win.

Posted August 20, 2013 6:08 pm

Thompson has pretty good inside game, and from what ive seen of pulev hes not one to thrive on the inside and as the author states likes to keep it at range. This could be the diffence depending on the ref. My money would be on Thompson in a close but scrappy fight.

Posted August 20, 2013 5:54 pm

As much as I like Tony, what difference will a win make for him? Would anyone even bid to stage Tony-Wlad 3 and if they did, why would 40yo Tony prove any better than 35yo Tony did? I say let the winner of this take on one of the new pretenders, Fury after Haye has destroyed him or Wilder when he one day decides to fight a real opponent.
Oh, and Pulev by middle rounds TKO while trailing on the cards is my prediction.

stuck in a moment

Pulev is -350. Big favorite. Vegas knows something here. I give Thompson no chance

Posted August 20, 2013 2:14 pm

I haven’t seen enough of Pulev to be certain of him. If he can handle TT who is a tricky opponent with considerable skills then he is due a shot at a Kbro. If he can’t get past TT then I will be left wondering what all the hype was about. Given what I understand I suspect Pulev should win but I’m kinda rooting for TT cos he is a good lad and has a record to rival anyone not named Klitchko. It fact, in Pulev, I get a whiff of a hype-job. I hope it’s a good fight and, although it won’t happen, I’d like to see the winner vs Stiverne.

Pulev. I think both men might taste the canvas at some stage, but my pick is Pulev by a late stoppage or decision. Hopefully it’s a good bout!

Posted August 20, 2013 1:21 pm

Thompson by KO. With what he could do to the next big thing (David Price) Pulev is quaking in his boots.

Posted August 20, 2013 1:12 pm

Posted August 20, 2013 12:29 pm

I see it being a somewhat technical boring fight. Both men will patiently try to land more jabs. The fight will be close but the younger fresher man should get their in the end. It is a great matchup and great test but may not be a crowd pleaser.
