Lol Brother Turbo-Hamster. By the way did you know that the late great Larry Merchant is a vulture enthusiast too. He’s been very generous with his wallet too. Just thought I’d share that with you.

Many thanks for your generosity.
We are planning on marching in DC soon, protesting the profiling going on over the (google: Vultures Swarm N.C. Neighborhood) fiasco. It an extremely unfair situation started by a coalition of haters. “Victory for Vultures” is our motto and are accepting donations, but our application for tax exemption is being held up by the IRS for some reason…

No problem Brother. Here have 250,000 of my own personal points completely gratis. Gonzo is always willing to lend out helping hand to those in need, especially to tier 2 posters and those who have been so gracious with their patronage and lending their support to help spread vulture awareness.

You’re a very lucky man to have a cabin in a place like that, would I be correct in assuming that’s it’s situated in vulture domain?

250,000 ESB ranking points for Brother Ernie.

Brother Gonzo, It’s a little embarassing but I would like to cash in say twenty thousand points or so. We are putting a new roof on our family cabin in Flagstaff and could use the extra bucks at this time. Your consideration is greatly appreciated, Brother Ernie

I SEE GOOD — I’ve got no time for playing Where’s Waldo, so it makes no difference to me who you are. If you are a spotted turtle once a week hiding in some Where’s Waldo comic “as seen on TV”, all the power to you. Just keep posting and stay a fan. Too many boxing fans are getting curious about what skills are used in MMA and as a result boxing is losing fans because MMA ain’t the hollow sport diehard boxing fans think it is. We need to recognize that it’s OK to be a fan of baseball and basketball — both ball sports with different skill sets. And likewise, it’s OK to be a boxing fan and MMA fan – both combat sports with different skills. But with that said, the trajectory for boxing continues to be deeper and deeper into a “who cares?” cesspool. So here’s to stinking like crap because I’m a diehard boxing fan. And…Tell me who you are if you like, but I’m not good at playing the part of an organ grinder’s pet on a leash with tin cup in hand looking for a handout from people I don’t know. I just don’t care enough to be that curious. Peace to you and keep on posting.

International Vulture Awareness Day

We’re going BIG this year!

Vultures are an ecologically vital group of birds that face a range of threats in many areas that they occur. Populations of many species are under pressure and some species are facing extinction.

The International Vulture Awareness Day has grown from Vulture Awareness Days run by the Birds of Prey Programme in South Africa and the Hawk Conservancy Trust in England, who decided to work together and expand the initiative into an international event.

It is now recognised that a co-ordinated international day will publicise the conservation of vultures to a wider audience and highlight the important work being carried out by the world’s vulture conservationists.

On 7th September 2013, the aim is for each participating organisation to carry out their own activities that highlight vulture conservation and awareness. This website, established in July 2009, provides a central place for all participants to outline these activities and see the extent of vulture conservation across the world

It’s not a friends list Bother Adrian (although I do consider all tier 2 posters friends). That’s the tiers of the ESB ranking system and one can only work their way up through each tier on merit. Obviously there’s only one top tier poster on here (myself), but working your way up to becoming a tier 2 poster is also a very notable achievement too and it’s certainly no easy feat. A tier 2 poster has to have amassed at least 5,000,000 ESB ranking points and have penned at least 50 posts Gonzo deems of Gonzo-esque standard.

And yes, International Vulture Awareness Day is indeed just around the corner. I’m amped up beyond words, as indeed I’m sure no doubt you are too. I know for a fact that Brother Ernie and Brother Turbo-Hamster are literally chomping at the bit and are besides themselves with excitement about this.

Canelo is STRONG with SKILLS and GOOD Defence. Whats FLOYD going to do . Hes fighting a guy that can PUNCH and is YOUNG and STRONG , Good SKILLS. All I mention FLOYD beats his past opponents because they didnt have ANY of these SKILLS. And the FIGHTERS that ONCE did have SKILLS are TO OLD TIRED AND WORN OUT. Yes FLOYD is GOOD He sure is BUT BETTER AT CHERRYPICKING than ANY OTHER BOXER IN HISTORY. hand pick is hand pick.. Floyd didnt FOOL Larry Merchant thats for sure

You’re the guy who said Jan Zaveck was a good boxer and would beat Andre Berto… Then you interviewed your expert trainer friend and he perdicted Berto would beat Guerrero..

Then you interviewed your expert friend again and he wouldn’t make a prediction on Cotto-Trout..

I got all 3 of those fights right on your story treads… So if you think I don’t know what I’m talking about, that’s OK..

You have ZERO knowledge about Boxing, and are batting ZERO.

MANY MANY in this INDUSTRY have been kill or in wheel chairs. I went as FAR as grade 8. I make $100.00 @hour I dont get paid that for being good looking or educated. BECAUSE I AM NOT. I have had EVERY BONE in my body BROKEN on time or another over the past 37 years. I CHOOSE this PROFESSION because what am I going to do WORK at Mac Donalds with my education??? Anyways I DONT like the USA most Canadians feel the same. HOLLYWOOD came to me I did NOT want to go to the USA. I have NEVER watch 1 f$cking episode. But I do LIKE the MONEY I get PAID. Beats risking my life for $100.00@hour. thats for sure. The SHOW and the PRODUCERS are from Burbank I would NOT go to the opening in L.A because I have issues with your country. As in LIFE all good things come LATE. I wish I would of gotten this break when I was YOUNGER. at my age WHO cares.

i usually don’t plug the show this much…anyone who knows me realizes this. I did on this occassion because someone on this thread kept calling me out and I wanted to put a stop to it.

Guys, there is every reason to be on board the Deontay Wilder Express. But, I wouldn’t jump into the ring with the top fighters in the division just yet if I were GBP or Al Haymon.

In the immortal words of Tark the technical wizard, “Maybe Deontay can zip a right hand and go whizzing into a top ten fighter’s defense.” Lol!!

@Tachyon: I get a feeling you do not like the Klitschko boys! WHY???? Are they too white for you????

Posted August 11, 2013 3:09 pm

I think one of the problems is that promoters and Networks think it is more important to keep a fighter’s “0” in place in hopes of big paydays in stead of properly developing them. This goes for Wlad too. Fortunately for him Steward saw his talent was too great to just push aside after his losses when he finally stepped up. Clearly Wilder has not been ready for prime time for some time now. However, he would have learned more in some losses to better opposition and been in better position to take over today instead of being 29 and 0 with 29 KO’s. These fighters should step up more today. Promoters have to change their attitude where if you lose, then you are automatically dropped back down to the very bottom. We as fans should not be tricked by the promoters and networks that the worth of a boxer is measured by this questionable aura of an undefeated record.

USA does not have any good heavies and neither does the rest of the world Heavy is a dead division. EU have never had a good heavy other than Lewis and they follow the Klits through this weak era of Heavy boxing. As usual any heavy that looks good the klits avoid lol what a joke. Klits are transformers robots in disguise.

wilder is nothing but an untested prospect. tiger Thompson is the best yank heavy at the moment. which is a sad thought. I just hope there is a big a lump of a kid out there somewhere in the world who loves boxing and realises how pitiful the situation will be post Kbros. if that kid is hungry enough then the heavyweight division might be saved from a mediocre future.

Lol!! Tark says:

“But why do I say Wilder is a boxer-puncher?

Because he takes his time and doesn’t rush in like Lamon Brewster and start brawling.. Just because you have KO power doesn’t mean you should trade punches.

Wilder is developing a great jab and he has very good range with it. Wladimir gave him a lot of tips on the jab. He’s very generous with his knowledge of it.

You saw how Wilder threw a powerful outside straight right that put Liakhovich on the ropes… then zipped in and whipped a powerful right hook around Sergei’s guard smack in front of his left ear and just below his temple… and whipped a 3rd right to the top of the head as SL was falling to the canvas.

It was reminiscent of Joe Louis’s triple left hook as Max Baer was dropping to the canvas.. The man is not a thrower like Mac Foster.. He has a little technique going already … Again, you can only fight the guys who are willing to face you.”

Lol!! Just what I thought!! You’re just a fan who has no ability to provide any kind of technical insight!! Like I said, you’re not my equal!! I will never trade with you ever again.

I can see why Deontay Wilder will have trouble against fighters who make him move about the ring and apply pressure, but it’s obvious that you can’t.

You’re an idiot, Tark!! Listen to my show tonight, brother…and I will explain why he’ll have trouble with any fighter who is proficient at either using the entire ring like Tomasz Adamek, or applying pressure and making him use his feet like Chisora, Chris Arreola, and Bermane Stiverne.

Posted August 11, 2013 11:19 am

Ivan Danko

Wilder said that Mago was a bum and that he is ready to kill all the bums in the HW division.
i mean, Wilder seems to be out of control man, he said that he already can taste Wlad’s blood.
He promised to ko Wlad in savage fashion.
Wilder also said that he hold his own in the sparring sessions against Wlad, on the other hand, Wlad said that Wilder was his best sparring partner ever.
It seems that they made 45 brutal rounds together.
Wilder said that he was always in contention in these sparring sessions, because, he didn’t want to get expelled from the camp.
I don’t know man, Wilder said that he wants to kill both K- brothers, even his trainer was telling him to calm down, but, Wilder was screaming in the locker room like a lunatic.
I want to kill both Klitschkos! I want to kill both Klitschkos! Everyone could hear the man screaming.
Crazy man!

Posted August 11, 2013 11:18 am

Obvious typo below: days=years.

Posted August 11, 2013 10:54 am

@Jim. Agreed. If there were no Klitschkos, Thompson would be the current recognized champ and probably Haye owning some lesser belt in parallel. Thompson indeed should get his dues and more respect than he gets. The bad part is Thompson is getting old as well so his days are numbered, he himself admitted he’s sorry he started the high level boxing so late in his career.

Pulev has a tough task ahead, but if he pulls it off he’s the legitime #1 contender for Wlad. Wlad’s days are getting numbered as well in couple of days when he nears to 40-years old. So up and coming names could make the HW landscape very interesting coming days – Pulev, Fury, Haye, Wilder etc.

I’d like I see bermane stiverne and Deontay wilder. Thomas Adamek and Bryant Jennings. Tony Thompson and Tyson Fury(followed by Thompson Hughie Fury). And Dereck Chisora vs Cris Arreola.

Posted August 11, 2013 8:11 am

Just my opinion—if the Klitschko brothers were not out there—the champ would be Tony Thompson. This guy does not get enough respect, yet he has done more in the division than the Wilders, Scotts, Mitchells, etc.—-He was competitive with Klitschko, but he is just a tad below that. Nothing at all wrong with that. Wlad Klitschko will go down as a top ten alltime by the time he is done. Give Thompson his dues. He has earned it in my eyes.

Posted August 11, 2013 2:46 am

Herron if you get a nationally syndicated TV show like my friend Jim Cramer, I’ll call in.. I don’t listen to the radio a lot.

But why do I say Wilder is a boxer-puncher?

He has a little technique going already … Again, you can only fight the guys who are willing to face you.

When Wlad and Vitali fight taller fighters it becomes alot more interesting. The fight with Wlad vs Wach and Pianetta wlad was forced to me more active and more aggressive. Watching the K Bros fight short fat guys or blown up cruisers is boring partly because they are so freaking good at fighting shorter guys. Put Fury or an improved wilder in against them and it will be an interesting fight.

Foodstamps and welfare killed US HW boxing

History has shown that all freaks with long KO strikes against non-competetion has failed. The women beater Wilder will fill this patteren very well.

I’ve always figured it was just haters calling klitschkos boring. These same cats call floyd mayweather exciting. Now that’s the definition of FLIP FLOPPING”

I don’t think what Wlad and Floyd do are no where near the same. I Believe that Vitali is on the same level except when watching Vitali fight his opponent have no chance the Heavy Weight out there today pose no real challenge for him. For me it tough to watch a Vitali fight, I find Wlad to be boring because of his style. People say Floyd runs but he stands on the rope ans slips punched right in front of the guy thats trying to hit him, when has Wlad every done that. Floyd drop his hand and invite punches to be thrown at him so he can counter, when has Wlad done that. Floyd went toe to toe with Mosley, when have you seen Wlad stand toe to toe with anyone. Vitali has he did with Lennox Lewis, Chris bird, Corrie Sander, and a host of other fighter. Wlad was exciting early on in his career before the KO’s but since then he’s been protecting his glass jaw.

Posted August 11, 2013 1:03 am

Wilder has a ton of potential height, reach, speed power. He can land a massive punch against inferior opponents but still needs alot more rounds under the belt with top 15 guys. He is not ready for wlad “yet”. If he faces the winner of Mitchel/Arreola then say Thompson or some else well ranked maybe. He needs at least 3 more fights with some big names and need to be tested.

Nameless, it appears your single-handedly ruining this forum IF you have power to get people banned. You seem to have nasty opinions of people that don’t share your often nonsense views. So you can say what you want, but at the same time, you want to control and judge others? DOES EVERYONE IN HERE SEE this guy’s immature temper tantrums? Play by this guy’s rules or he’s taking his ball and going home. It’s ok people, to have your own opinion, as long as it doesn’t differ from Nameless. Well, how about this… If you have power to ban folks obviously someone made a terrible choice allocating that kind of power to someone with such immaturity and only this site will reflect the collateral, not the people that you spitefully ban for your own personal enjoyment. I INVITE EVERYONE TO SCROLL ALL OF “NAMELESS'” COMMENTS & SEE HOW IMMATURE HE IS. YET, HE WILL BAN YOU IF YOU MAKE HIM MAD BY DISAGREEING. I would strongly advise against abuse of power as surely no good reviews of this forum will be generated as an outcome!

I’m going to hit the hay now, but I will be giving my complete assessment of Deontay’s performance on tomorrow night’s show.

Also, I’ll be interviewing Deontay on this Tuesday night’s edition of “The pugilist KOrner”.

If anyone wants to call in and voice their opinions concerning Wilder’s big KO, please use 718-506-1506.

The show starts at 9PM EST. My segment begins at 9:00PM, Ronnie Shields comes on at 9:30PM, and James Gogue ends the show from 10-10:30 PM EST.

Posted August 11, 2013 12:00 am

Joseph Herron

I’ve seen it prior to last night’s fight as well, Pratt.

That doesn’t mean he won’t be able to adapt over time. But without rounds against some tough fighters who will push Wilder throughout, he won’t learn a damn thing.

He needs to go rounds if he expects to compete against the division’s elite. He’s not being cultivated properly with his current level of competition.

He runs the risk of suiffering the same fate as David Price. Poor Dave went from the wading pool to the ocean by taking on Tony Thompson.

Prospects need to hire guys Bruce Trampler and Don Chargin to help cultivate their skills properly.

You still will not throw Fres up there huh James????? #5 in the world. Fought more rounds than any guy here. Better opposition than anyone here. Never KO. Never down. Beat every guy he ever fought and robbed. Still the underdog I see.

Thompson is the best today, wilder has the most potential and is still the most untested.

Posted August 10, 2013 11:42 pm

Heron, I saw Wilder eat a couple of good lefts from Sergei, and it looked like he did not like getting hit. He may have a chin of glass, we just do not know yet. Put him in with a real tough guy like Arreola.

Posted August 10, 2013 11:40 pm

Seriously, Tark

Call into the show tomorrow and state your reasons why you feel Deontay isn’t a product of hype and you truly believe he would be able to handle pressure fighters like Chisora, arreola, and Stiverne?

I won’t belittle you and I promise I will give you sufficient time to state your case.

I really like Deontay and truly believe he has the potential to be something really special. But I won’t be completely onboard until he’s shown how he handles adversity in the ring. Because we really don’t know at this point in his career.

Most people in the industry trust me enough to divulge a lot of potentially incriminating information because I know what I’m talking about and am not just a stool looking to create news.

One of the reasons why it’s pointless to debate anything with you concerning this topic, is that you say things without explaining anything and it makes you sound like a fanboy.

For instance, you claim that Wilder is a good boxer/puncher. How so? What does he do…show your boxing knowledge. Let us know what you think you see.

When have you ever seen Wilder react to pressure well and handle fighters who can fight proficiently on the inside. Has he shown exceptional footwork? What have you seen in his brief time in the ring?

Excitement in boxing? That all depends on how an individual defines excitement. Excitement often gets very different from fan to fan. I think the klitschkos are exciting as hell. The land the most brutal shots from begining to end and usually always ko their man. If they don’t ko him he takes one hell of a beating.

Heavyweights are usually exciting just because of heavy power and ko’s.

I’ve always figured it was just haters calling klitschkos boring. These same cats call floyd mayweather exciting. Now that’s the definition of FLIP FLOPPING

Posted August 10, 2013 11:15 pm

Herron says of Wilder…, “Something tells me that he hasn’t reacted well under pressure in the gym and has trouble dealing with someone who presses him while fighting him on the inside.”

What told you that Herron??? A little birdie? The Wilder team actually made a Chisora fight… They were more than anxious to fight somebody like Chisora, a guy who had a recent title fight… They thought they would murder Chisora, but the fight didn’t work out due to Wilder’s scrape with the law…

Liakhovich was the 2nd best guy they could find to fill in… Unfortunately he’s much farther gone than they ever thought — even though he went several rounds with Bryant Jennings and stayed on his feet.

Now they’re looking for the next guy.. Maybe that will be Mitchell.. Maybe Jennings.. Maybe Chisora.. Maybe Price.. They can only fight the guys who will agree to face a big, tall, rangy, dangerous bomber.

Deontay is much improved since even 2012, but what have these one round knock-outs told us about Wilder?

Not much. I have a lot of respect for the brass at Golden Boy Promotions, but why have Eric Gomez and Robert Diaz been dragging their feet with the former Olympian’s career?

If you compare Wilder’s career to Mitchell’s, GBP has accelerated Seth’s level of competition long before Deontay’s…why?

Deontay seems to be explosive with good handspeed and elite level power…so why have they been so hesitant to stick the Alabama native in with decent competition? That alone raises a lot of questions.

Deontay seems to be more relaxed in the ring now as well. He has shown much better footwork in his most recent bouts, but has not been in the ring with a tough pressure fighter who can fight well on the inside.

Regardless of what some people seem to think, we have no idea how Deontay will react when faced with someone with those qualities.

Something tells me that he hasn’t reacted well under pressure in the gym and has trouble dealing with someone who presses him while fighting him on the inside.

With the genuine buzz floating around the boxing community, Golden Boy has no choice but to start increasing his level of competition.

Wilder may or may not be an elite level talent…only time will tell. Because no one, not even Wilder knows at this point.

Mac Foster was super easy to hit and had no jab… Mac had no stance and no footwork… Mac was big, tall, and strong.. He could throw hard.. Losing to Quarry was a little bit like Seth Mitchell losing to Jonathon Banks … The difference is Mitchell made a concerted effort to find out what the Hell he was doing wrong … and why he got hit.

But Deontay Wilder is a much better boxer and defender than Mac Foster ever was… and even quite a bit better than Seth Mitchell at this point.. If Mitchell beats Arreola, even if he knocks Chris out, the Wilder people would have no problem at all in fighing Seth.. The Mitchell team might never go for it though. They’re not ready to commit suicide.

As a matter of fact just to ad lib on that I have to say I admire and have the utmist respect for fighters cut from the ilk of Gene tunney,Larry Holmes and Lennox Lewis who were not just Smart inside the ri.g but OUTSIDE as well. Each of these men became fairly wealthy and understood the business aspect of the squared circle and beyond, KEEPING their wealth as well. Especially Holmes. Very admirable.

Urone 2, I think MENTALLY yes, Lennox had gotten let’s say, beyond boxing. It was becoming evident since the embarrassing loss to Haseem Rachman. Which he if course avenged emphatically. Ali? The man simply accomplished a lot in his career and had a reached a loint where he had become mentally lazy or worn lut and it reflected in his preparations for later fights. Particularly the Jimmy young bout where he definitely had that spare tire you spoke of. Ali,Holmes,Louis each had their share of gimmie fights yes, but overall they stood their ground against some tough custoners and proved tneir mettle. I take nothing away from them. Lennox you are correct, made in the long run I sulpose the right move. He left with his faculties intact, wealthy and us now a family man. In that rehard the man came out a winner and ahead of many of his contemporaries. Cheers my friend.

Well, he’s the most tattooed. And that’s a lot of skin real estate on Wilder.

Posted August 10, 2013 9:27 pm

Is Wlad boring?

I guess it depends. I watch all his fights. I liked how he fought prior to Emanuel but understand completely that his current style is better suited for the long haul and increases his chances of winning. So there is enjoyment in seeing someone being able to adapt and continue to win because he is using superior methods to win even if they are seemingly basic.

If you want to learn what to do, Wlad is someone you would want to learn from.

If you want pure excitement, then maybe not so much. You have other fighters that are for that. Fighters that will risk it all for the KO and excite the crowd.

The variety is good in boxing.

Posted August 10, 2013 9:27 pm

I see Good:

Wlad’s “problem” with conditioning may have been just down to him not learning how to pace himself and control the fight like he should. After all, he has held a PHD in Sports Science and has access to the best in the field for many years now.

Stamina can deplete quickly for many reasons: Genetics is one. How big you are and how and if your heart and lungs are able to fuel your body properly. Big bodies tend to tax the heart and lungs more. Have you ever seen a 6’6, 245 pound Marathon runner? Probably rare. Although you do have some rare breeds of humans like Wilt Chamberlain who was Huge physically, very strong, and had phenomenal endurance. His body was built for it during his playing years.

Nerves. That can be a problem. You can have great endurance but if your nerves get to you, your heart can pump faster which will cause you to get tired quicker. Some guys are great in the gym but can’t perform in front of a crowd. Their nerves get to them. They are relaxed in sparring and tight in a fight. They tire quick.

Opponent. Your opponent can take control of the pace of the fight which will push you to work out of your comfort zone. Fighters like Wlad like to use the Jab and Clinch to control the pace. And control the center of the ring which he did differently in the 2nd Brewster fight.

Getting punched in the face and to the body can really mess you up and deplete your energy.

I’m not an expert on it though. I’m just relating some of it from experience and a lot from what has been said by the Pros who have lived and learned from it all.

You have to control your emotions. You have to control your body so that it doesn’t shoot out to much adrenaline which will burn you right out.

Posted August 10, 2013 9:21 pm

TNT…, “I believe that Wilder would lose to David Haye, Chris Areola, and TonyThompson. Wilder is a great atlete, but does he have boxing skills to beat the elete fighters”

Wilder would murder Arreola.. He would murder Thompson.. The Haye fight would be tough. Haye should probably be favored, but it’s a real dangerous fight for Haye anyway.

I would try to get a Bryant Jennings fight … a calculated risk, but the fght would go a lot of rounds… Deontay needs to fight a very tough heavyweight who can box well and go a lot of rounds and Jennings would give him that … Arreola would cave in 3 or 4 rounds max… He’s done.

Urone 2, Goodevening. That is precisely the point my friend. In todays state of affairs with boxing, its a out instant financial gratification for ALL parties involved. In most cases the young prosoect is rushed into a major title fight without having been brought along properly, having gained sufficient experience and real honing of their skills. The result more often than not a richer prospect but now a psychologically damaged fighter who has taken a beating by a more accomplished champion. Hopefully this won’t be the case with Wilder. In the days of Leonard and Hearns,etc.. They were brought along at a pace that produced, progressive results with each fight. That’s part of what made fighters of that ilk so special. Canelo vs Mayweather immediatly comes to mind as I believe Canelo though promising, is STILL a work in progress. Time will tell my friend with Denotay Wilder. Peace and strength

Posted August 10, 2013 9:18 pm

….. “I remember seeing a video of Ali sitting on a table talking about no matter how hard he works out he can’t lose that spare tire.”

That is just total BS… You never see the Klitschko Bros with a spare tire and they’re 37 and 42… You think you’ll ever see David Haye with a spare tire??? He trains his ass off… Bernard Hopkins is 48 and you never see him other than in perfect condition.

It’s not age that gives you a spare tire… It’s laziness and a lack of work ethic.

Mainly to MEXICAN fighters.. If I were a boxer I would NEVER fight in the states, Not even for LOTS of money. I always ROOT for a BOXER that fights for another country against ANY American. Because I have SUCH a bad taste in my mouth watching what the AMERICAN JUDGES doing what they do BEST is CHEAT.. Like Larry Merchant said on NATIONAL TV.. Wilider looked very powerful fast and athletic against Lahovich. However fighting Lahovich proved nothing, after 29 fights. A fighter the has lost 4 of his last 7 fights, a professional stiff. I believe that Wilder would lose to David Haye, Chris Areola, and TonyThompson. Wilder is a great atlete, but does he have boxing skills to beat the elete fighters

Posted August 10, 2013 9:01 pm

Ali left a lot in the ring… A lot of half efforts against guys like Jimmy Young… Alfredo Evangelista… Ruddi Lubbers… Buster Mathis… Mac Foster… Larry Holmes… Leon Spinks … and he didn’t convince me he won 2 of his 3 Norton fights.

As far as Larry Holmes. He should have given Tim Witherspoon a deserved rematch, Tim gave him a Hell of a fight… He wasn’t ready for the 1st Michael Spinks fight… He padded his record with a few soft touches like Marvis Frazier, when he was 44-0 and Frazier was 10-0… He wasn’t ready for the Tyson fight.

spartacus 65,

I think Lennox Lewis was smart enough to know that his rein had come to and end. He was coming into fights heavier and heavier, I remember seeing a video of Ali sitting on a table talking about no matter how hard he works out he can’t lose that spare tire. At a point most fighter need to realize when the end is apon them. Most don’t, Lennox recognized what was going on and decided it was time to hang them up. Lennox was tired in the 3rd or 4th round of that fight I believe he was losing his ability to be in top shape, his time had come and he knew it.

I think Wilder has all of the tools to work with to get him to the top, but he may be lacking in defense. If his trainers don’t fall in love with his power and teach him to slip punches, roll some power of the shots that do catch him, hw will do good. He seem to have the speed and reflexes to be able to, and yet if a big opportunity present itself he maybe thrown to the wolves before hes ready.

Lennox Lewis left a very sour taste,in my mind by not looking to redeem his effort against Vitali Klitschko. Though he won the bout due to a very, very ugly gash over the eye if Klitschko, his lack lustee performance left some unfinished business to attend to. When you are a oriud champion AND you are being offered millions of dollars for a return bout YOU RISE TO THE OCCASION AND STEP UP TO THE PLATE. That’s what champions do. I will not downplay his reign as a champion. I will accord the man the respect due him,yet that still says a lot about Lennox as a PRIDE fighter so to speak. Klitschko even with that hudeous gash was quite willingly to fight on and if need be go out in his shield. That’s what defines a FIGHTER. Joe Louis,Ali,Holmes did not know the meaning of leaving doubts. Win,lose or draw these champions left it all IN THE RING. Just food for thought.

Goodevening gentlemen. Let’s put this in perspective. Wilder is a very athletic heavyweight that possesses admirable speed and impressive power for his considerable size. What he brings to the tabke is excitement. Something the,Heavyweight division has been lacking for quite some time. However he NEEDS to strengthen his quality of opposition and step up now to the next level. You can only go so far feasting on former formidable fighters. His defense is still porous. His aggression is good but he needs to utilize hia obvious height and reach advantages much better. He still has a bit of balance issues. Would like to see his chin and stamina tested. That will tell the true story on Mr. Wilder. The Klitchskos? Respectable, fine champions who have represented the spkrt as a whole well. Waldimer, the gounger brother is a good fivhter , deceptively agile for his size and posseses good shock power. However his chin has left some question marks. Lamon Brewster and Corrie Sanders(RIP) come to mind. Emmanuel Steward remolded Wlad into the very formidable champion we see today. He has learned,to utilize his assets very well. Dr. Ironfist, impresses moreso, because he is a durable, resolute, albeit stiff boxer, yet a very effective boxer. His chin is certainly made of the right mettle. Wilder in my view has a better shot at victory against the you.ger Klitschko because he can reach him and I know Wlad is very aware of the resistence level of that chin of his. Better than Lennoxs chin most certainly,as he proved i tne Peters match, yet still a potential liability. Wilder however needs to improve his game considerably nonetheless before attempting to face either one of these men. David Haye? A publicity hound who embarrassed all of England with his shameful non effort against Wladimer. Truly embarrassing. Larry Holmes and Ali would have shown this fraud how to back up the talk. Cheers gentlemen, peace and strength.

Wilder must step up.

Posted August 10, 2013 8:12 pm

Wilder still needs more experience. He has the punching power to take anyone out if he lands flush.. I really think he has a bright future.. and even if he is not what some hope he is, at least he is entertaining to watch..

As for Liakhovich, he has been inactive and on the downside of his career, but I still expected more from him. He took Lamon Brewsters bombs, and fought back, but today he just looked like a man who just hasn’t taken a punch in ages..

Congratulations to Wilder, hope he stays active , and keep punching!!

Dionysus has almost a personal vendetta against Wilder. He’ll be tested and then we’ll see but you have to come down a notch, buddy.

Posted August 10, 2013 7:56 pm

Bloody site keeps eating my comments! this win for Wilder proves very little except that, at 29 pro fights, he is still untested. This in itself suggests a lack of confidence in his camp. Until he has faced several genuine contenders his is, at best, fringe. And don’t give me….he wanted to fight Chisora. Granted Chisora would a a major step up but he is only a gatekeeper. IMHO Wilder is still good at dominating C levels, nothing more. Hope he steps up and proves me wrong.

I agree, he doesn’t need to step up. It’s obvious that he’s perfectly content with fighting bums and nursing home patients.

FA, Wilder is athletic and was a fine basketball player. He would slaughter Jennings. Tony Thompson or Chisora might be able to take him deep. Then we will find out what we all want to know.

“Wilder has outstanding speed and power and he has the size……..If Wilder has a decent enough defense and skill then I fully expect him to go further than Jennings…” – KL, a good point when appraising prospects. Athleticism, size and punching power often signal a bigger upside than fundamentally solid but unspectacular prospects. Only problem is we’ve not seen if Wilder’s KOs are due to low level comp or other level talent.

Posted August 10, 2013 6:51 pm

@Bears- I agree. Wlad’s chin was at a point considered suspect after Sanders. But Several things after that were proven clear: sanders’ was able get that sledghammer of a left out of the holster deceptively fast, and it would ruin about anyone’s day if it landed solid. And as for Wlad’s chin, sanders left being no fluke and Sam Peter landing several bombs flush on Wlad showed that he was not “chinny” and can actually take a punch. Going back to Corrie Sanders (RIP), he had the nastiest, most devestating left, period!

Posted August 10, 2013 6:50 pm

Wilder can definitely punch, if he lands a punch like last night on anyone, they will get very wobbled at least, he can’t rely on getting his punch landed first though. when he fights better competition they might likely land first as well, so he needs to box more as well before fighting the top Heavyweights.

Posted August 10, 2013 6:47 pm

good to see wilder is causing some interest in the heavywts. He has some tough challenges here and abroad. Who is next for him? Probably Fran Botha! this guy is sheltered!

Posted August 10, 2013 6:36 pm

Wlads chin is just fine and every bit as good as lennoxs. Watch the sam peter bouts show u that. And even haye landed on wlad. People want to pretend wlads jaw is glass. Yeah right dude. He’s never been one punch stopped and he never got ktfo like lewis dropping like a sa of potatoes multipl times

Posted August 10, 2013 6:34 pm

Wilder certainly has the size @ 6’7″ and KO power to compete in the modern heavy weight division. He also has the physique that says he’s serious about his career, unlike too many heavies who look sloppy and out of shape. He’s also throwing his punches with more precision. Soon, against better opposition, we’ll see if his defense, chin, and most importantly, his heart are world-class. At this point, though, he’s definitely one to watch, one who could shake up the heavyweight rankings in a big way.

Posted August 10, 2013 6:24 pm

And popkins, I won’t deny that I believe Wladimir has a fragile chin. But that’s ok. It is better not to get hit than to let someone punch your chin to prove a stupid point. Wladimir has developed his defenses to avoid getting hit and that’s called the sweet science.

Posted August 10, 2013 6:24 pm

Wladimir would knock wilder TFO out because he’s 100 times more skilled. Wilder would get hit with a left jab, left hook, and strait right from a mile out. He wouldn’t see them coming and he would get hurt and knocked out. Wilder hasn’t faced a striker half as good as wlad who is an ATG and top 5 all time. I hink top 3. Wilder has literally faced nobody. If wilder is so awesome for beating a waaaaaaaaaay past it lyakhovic than helenius is a grand master for knockin out serg lyakhovic, brewster, and peter. Wilder awesome? C’mon man! Anyone peddling that folly is a stoog

Posted August 10, 2013 6:23 pm

popkins, I only saw the clip on the internet. Looks like the tall guy can do a one-two but I saw nothing else on the fight. Hey, I never said he was any good but that he has a lottery’s chance since he looks like he can KO boxers who he has fought, all 29 cab drivers. I like both K-brothers. Don’t get me wrong. They are the most professional boxers inside and outside the ring today but the style do not attract the lay fans out there who are running off to watch MMA. Dam, ESPN doesn’t even cover boxing anymore. They are covering UFC going to Boston. However, I don’t know if ESPN would cover Wilder even if the guy won the HW title. That’s a different subject for another blog.

Posted August 10, 2013 6:19 pm

One major reason Wladimir Klitschko would Knock Wilder TFO:

Wlad has been in with the very best of his era and he’s mastered his jab-straight right… Goodnight!

Wlad’s confidence conditioning and all skills are at peak champion levels.
He was trained by arguably the best trainer boxing had ever seen (RIP Manny S.)

Wilder is untested from fighting ALL nobodies and has amassed fake confidence. He has little round experience. Has never had to “dig deep” from facing a threat or adversity at any point.

Posted August 10, 2013 6:14 pm

“And Wilder isnt eything like the fast hardhitter Sanders.”….did you even watch last night’s fight?!

Posted August 10, 2013 5:56 pm

I’ll wait & see Wilder in against a quality opponent who still has respectable power, speed, Desire, & most of all some true talent before I place on any list besides potential Champion some day. At this point in his career he is only a fringe contender.

Posted August 10, 2013 5:49 pm

Fury’s the best !!!

Posted August 10, 2013 5:48 pm

Nice breakdown Slater. Wilder has more potential than any other heavyweight out there… great jab, athletic with a huge reach, quick hands, and awesome power! I’m glad they’re building him slowly, as he didn’t have a great deal of amateur experience. Another 5-10 fights over the next 2 years and he’ll still only be 29. With the extra experience, and assuming his skills have improved a bit…he could well be a worthy successor to Wlad and Vitali! Can’t blame boxing fans for hoping for the best, after all, there hasn’t been a truly destructive, exciting, crowd pulling heavyweight champion this century. Dempsey in the 20’s, Louis in 30’s/40’s, Marciano in the 50’s, Frazier in the 60’s, Foreman in the 70’s, Tyson in the 80’s/90’s…. We’re due another one!

Posted August 10, 2013 5:48 pm

#1 Arreola #2 Arreola #3 Arreola #4 Thompson #5 Wilder !!!!

Posted August 10, 2013 5:44 pm

the hardest oponent wilder has faced is that hooker who took him4rounds,the mans a total fraud

Posted August 10, 2013 5:40 pm

Best US heavyweight would be proven by all the top level heavies fighting eachother to come to that conclusion. Having said that, it’s clear that this title of “best US heavyweight” means nothing and holds no true value. Wilder hasn’t fought Jennings, Mansour, Arreola, Scott, Thompson, etc…. So that’s clearly a deception at best. It would be fair to say Wilder seems to have potential. But the best US heavyweights are guys who have actually fought the best and have big names and wins on their records (ex: Jennings thompson and Arreola).

Posted August 10, 2013 5:35 pm

Put Wilder in the ring with Amir Mansour and watch the hype shatter like a Rock hitting a mirror!

Posted August 10, 2013 5:26 pm

Wilder is a bum! Flat out. I invite you all to stop buyin into the hype. Liakhovich didn’t look well before the fight and took alot of trauma in the war with Brewster and a Monster shot from Briggs. Not to mention he was all but retired and ten years older. So WTF did Deontay Wilder really do?!?! He also caught a stiff jab that snapped his head and pushed him back a few feet and I think it shocked wilder. I can say Wilder’s team is doing an excellent job keeping him away from dangerous fighters that will actually throw punches, move and cause him harm.

It may not prove Wilder is a good boxer but if he can reach Wladimir’s fragile chin…… first one to connect is all it takes to get that big guy.

I see Good:

There are robberies everywhere in the World. Many fighters have kept away from fighting in Germany that are not from that scene because of fears of being robbed.
Again, Robberies are global.

The Klitschkos would love to fight in America again but they’ll go where the Money is which is in Europe. Wlad has talked about fighting again in the States but said he needs the right opponent. Wilder actually might be that opponent.

Let’s not act like America has lost all its luster for being profitable in boxing:
Fighters still make millions here.

NEWSFLASH; Wilder to fight Bruce Seldon, then Danny Williams !

Posted August 10, 2013 4:24 pm

Hecdog…, You don’t know what you’re talking about. Right now there are many heavyweights who are big, tall, powerful and skilled..

Marciano was 5’10” and defended against light heavyweights because there were no good heavyweights.

Joe Frazier was also 5’10” and defended against little guys like Dave Zyglwictz and Terry Daniels… When he fought a 6’3″ X 217 puncher he got murdered.

Posted August 10, 2013 3:36 pm

I would take jennings to defeat wilder and arreola to defeat mitchel. Jennings to defeat thompson. Unless wilder landed a shot ha stopped jennings I see jennings outboxing wilder or outboxing him ladng to a stoppage.

I would rather have see abdusamalov vs wilder. That fight should be made if jennings vswilder can’t be made. Or arreola vs wilder thirdly. Or wilder vs helenius, or wilder vs winner of haye vs fury which I would be utterly shocked if fury defeats haye. That would unreal

Posted August 10, 2013 3:34 pm

Hosteen, what will it take for you to understand that Liahkovich wasn’t supposed to offer challenge to beat Wilder, but he was there to give Wilder some experience and rounds….obviously things didn’t work out that way.

Posted August 10, 2013 3:34 pm

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

Yeah… let’s find out who the best American HW reallly is! Match Wilder against the undefeated Jennings, who also beat Liakhovich.

The winner that match can fight Tiger Thompson — especially if he gets past Pulev — or the winner of the Mitchell vs. Arreola bout.

Then the winner those battles, needs to start going after the top contenders with a vengeance, trying to get a shot at a major title.

Posted August 10, 2013 3:23 pm

mitchell is always on hbo and wilder isnt on anything so of course seth is gonna win the poll !!!

Posted August 10, 2013 3:06 pm

What will it take for Slater to fully comprehend & understand that each and everyone of Wilder’s 29 opponents including this last one offered absolutely NO challenge to him going into the fight much less actually during the fight?

Posted August 10, 2013 2:55 pm

Peej, I’d go further than that, Wilder has definitely got speed, faster than a lot of other prospects out there.

Wilder isn’t ready for the Klitchkos but who is. I really like to se someone land on his chin to see if he has some good whiskers up there. But definitely got power. I would like to see his stamina tested too

Posted August 10, 2013 2:46 pm

Wilder’s power seems legit even though Liakhovich is really shopworn…Liakhovich was in one of the most brutal heavyweight fights I had ever seen with Brewster (which I think shortened each other’s career). Wilder must step up the competition… possibly against the winner of Mitchell and Arreola (which means he’d be facing Arreola). Jennings is getting traction and I think is more accomplished than Wilder. Andy Ruiz is also interesting but his weight will probably hurt him as he goes up against better competition.

Posted August 10, 2013 2:40 pm

Fight Aficionado, I’m not sold on Jennings, yes he’s solid and got decent skills……..but I don’t think he processes anything outstanding , a bit like Pulev, solid but not outstanding. Jenning also seems too small to mix it with the better big boys in the division. Wilder has outstanding speed and power and he has the size……..If Wilder has a decent enough defense and skill then I fully expect him to go further than Jennings for the reason I gave above.

Posted August 10, 2013 2:32 pm

Fight Aficionado

Tumbo, I don’t think a lot of guys were calling Jennings the next big thing even though his ring accomplishments vs solid comp is obv the best among American prospects. GBP has been more focused on hype and protecting Wilder’s 0 than positioning him into contention. It’s possible that one highlight reel KO already has put Wilder ahead of Jennings among boxing fans. In that way their formula is working.

Junio KLITCHKOS fight in Europe NOT USA. They want EUROS not American peso. They have NO problems fighting in the USA because they dont get ROB like other fighters because the K brothers KNOCK OUT their opponents or BEAT them severly. Like watching the first LENNOX LEWIS HOLYFIELD fight. It was a DRAW??????????/ Christ Lewis GAVE HOLYFIELD (Mr. Headbut the KING of HEAD BUTS Holyfield) A SEVER beating giving Mr. Headbut BRAIN DAMAGE. Oh Yeah it was a DRAW. Only in America. Going through Slater’s list is sort of depressing as it’s a sign of how truly thin the US heavyweight ranks remains. If Jennings and Wilder crash and burn then there’s basically nobody new on the horizon. As for Mitchell and Arreola, the winner will have some momentum but given Mitchell’s chin and lack of amateur background and Arreola’s poor training does anyone believe he’s a legit contender? And Mansour is an old hag beating up drunken bums, forget him.

Junio Well when the KLITCHKOS retire. SEND all BELTS directly to BROKE ASS ENGLAND. Do not pass go do NOT collect $200 dollars. Sad but TRUE gift wrap them and send them to LOUD MOUTH DAVID HAYE. Also remember that Wlad lost two of his three fights to Americans. He was retrained by an American. And is dating an American Girl. So he believes the hype America has to offer.

That said, Wilder is proving to be a big puncher but has to step it up big time to truly be considered a legit threat to Wladimir Klitschko. He has a punchers chance at this point. Wlad’s overall ability is on a whole different level…ATG level.

I’ve been saying Bryant Jennings is the best American heavyweight for the past year and Wilder’s KO doesn’t change that. What it does is give some much needed buzz to Wilder’s career. Now he needs to ramp up the comp to make him the No 2 US contender.

Posted August 10, 2013 1:37 pm

Wilder is a strong guy with long arms, and he can hurt you, but the heavyweight division is awful. The K bros are on their way out then there will be nothing but mediocre fighters. Sad state of heavy weight boxing.

Wilder and Jennings are in tested, but I think wilder will be great maybe not enough to beat a klitchow but to win world title when they retire. Arrello is good but he won’t beat any a or b class fighters. Thompson is good but pulev should win on late too or points. Scott was unlucky with chisora but he was winning but who knows what would happen after that point? The rest are crap so wilder is your best guy
