“I see Ward winning this one easily as he will get into Dawson’s head and roughhouse him with butts, elbows, and other semi-dirty stuff that will upset Chad’s fight plan. Dawson complained to the referee several times about Hopkins’ tactics and while John Scully will do his best to prepare Dawson, Ward is no Hopkins and will prevail by a dominant UD. This is a bad matchup for Dawson, particularly given the catch weight and the home advantage for Ward. It reminds me a bit of Leonard vs. Hagler in that respect.”

tonight your gonna see dawsons power smoke ward like frochs left at the end of their fight that jacked ward up and made his mouth piece pop out. martinez will smoke chavez. HBO is showing the KLITSCHKO documentary today and thats AWESOME!!!!!

Tonight, tou are going to see the smothering of Chad dawson.
This will be like against Kesler and Bika. SOG is going to break Chad from the inside; put him out of his rythm, then laten take hiam apart..

BTW, watch the scale when Ward weighs in. Ward adjusts it, then an official by his side adjusts it. Just before Ward steps off the scale you can see it bouncing upwards–this indicates the weight slide was set at too light a weight. My money says Ward weighed over the 168 pound limit–at least by half a pound. but they let him slide. Too late to screw up this fight now.

In this day and age of drastic weight cutting I’d say Kessler is a normal sized super-middleweight. If same day weigh ins were still in place I think he could still make the weight pretty comfortably. Both he and his trainer said he could make 160 if the right fight came up. I think it would be a real struggle for him to get down that low, there are many fighters who fight or who have fought in divisions below that who probably weigh as much as him come fight night. He’d be outsized by most of the guys in the division if he moved up to 175. Allan Green looked much bigger than him when they fought at the 172 catch weight. Why Kessler fought him at a catch weight is a bit of a mystery as he only weighed in at just over 169lbs and it gave Green, who has a huge frame and is very big for the weight, a big advantage by not forcing him to weaken himself to get down to 168.

Nick Cannon needs to go back to entertaining elementary school children. Walking unrehearsed, staring at the paper in his hands, walking in circles, turning his back on the audience…some pro. He sucked.

Ain’t no way I can see Chad getting any kind of decision if it’s close in Oakland. No Chance.

Can’t see past Ward in this, even though I don’t like him much (the whole SOG thing annoys me).

Ward is too adaptable, has plans B,C and D and Dawson coasts too much and isn’t active for every second of every round.

I’ll be very surprised if this is anything other than a UD for Ward (other than maybe a No Context for head clashes)

Kessler is not moving to Lhw, since his three next opponents have been decided, these fights will take place in smw. A fight in Denmark, Winner of Ward vs Dawson, in the states, and Froch in Nottingham. Concerning weight, Kessler is a big smw, he is not that tall, but still a big smw. Like Kessler, I believe that a Pro boxer should stay in shape, all year round, so not to have mess with hormonal levels, including insuline levels, making you tired. I agree with those that say that Dawson looks weakened. I don’t have to watch this fight. It is decided.

Go dawson, ko the buttheading grapler

Posted September 8, 2012 3:36 am

Dawson will need a ko to win. I do do not see that as a likely outcome. Ward is a good fighter made a lot better by the help of the corruption of the home town punks that get a meal ticket for pretending to be blind. All Ward has to do is his normal holding to stay out of trouble and his team of judges and his ref will do the rest.

Man, this site is really in the dumps these days. There was a time when the weigh in for the biggest fight of the week would be added to this site immediately. Now, people hardly even post concerning fights like this. Hmmm….

Dawson, physically doesn’t look terrible. but to me, it looks as though he couldn’t lose another ounce of weight. Perhaps, it’s just that I’m using to seeing him at 175. But it looks as though those 7 pounds make a big difference. We’ll find out tomorrow…

You often hear it because it’s true — styles do make fights. Ever watch a fight with two counter punchers, where neither wants to play the aggressor? Or two fighters who both like to do all their work inside with lots of holding and clinching? If you have, then you know these styles together often produce a boring fight, however put a counter puncher in with a guy who wants to work inside and you will likely have an exciting fight. So, yes, it’s true, “styles do make fights.”

IMO, chad dawson looks gaunt. Normally when I see a fighter look like that he gets beat easily, the vast majority of the time. I’m curious to see, how well Chad rehydrates. If he rehydrates well, he could do better than I think he will.

Posted September 7, 2012 10:18 pm

Tomato Can

lol, Chad Dawson by SD??? If anyone wins by SD, it’ll be Ward in a robbery. I think Dawson will win some rounds, in the early stages of the fight. but he’ll weaken in the mid to late rounds. At that stage Ward will take the fight over by rough housing, out thinking, and beating ward to the punch.

My mistake. I didn’t mean 154, I got confused with the weight he turned pro at. What I actually meant to say was he can make 160, which both he and his trainer are on record as saying, and I know it to be a statement of truth because I, Lord Gonzo of ESB, saw it with thine own eyes.

The “sweet science”–that’s another one. Put on some damn gloves, get in the ring and start swinging and see how much you think about “styles” and “science.” Really, man, what makes fights are the men behind the gloves. F’k styles and sweet science. Unless you’re a journalist, of course.

Peej, they both have KO power. Both Dawson and Ward have well over a 50% KO ratio with their KO percentage being nearly identical. That’s KO power.

Flash, you said: “I really don’t know if Ward will knock Dawson out or not but …” Then you predicted: “Ward by knock out in the 9th round.” Make up your mind, man. You should have your schizophrenia checked.

Posted September 7, 2012 8:50 pm

If the fight is reasonably close, or a REAL draw, they will give it to Ward.. But if Dawson wins by a comfortable margin, where a draw would stink the joint out, they will give it to Dawson.. In Ward’s last fight the judges were favoring Froch and wanted to give it to him.. But they had to be saying to themselves, “No possible way.” … Anymore, a draw in a lopsided fight is getting to be as bad as scoring with your eyes closed.

Posted September 7, 2012 8:32 pm

Kessler never said he could make 154… That would be almost like Chavez Jr making 154… Kessler said, “I’m moving to light heavyweight.”

Cosign Largo. This fight doesn’t take much analysis. Betting Ward by UD probably doesn’t hardly pay more than a straight win. Any suckers picking Dawson for the underdog payday are better off saving that dough and spending it at the bar. That’s what I’m doing.

Dawson is not going to KO Ward. Dawson has like 17 KO’s in 31 fights and Ward has 13 in 20 something fights. They don’t have KO power. Now not saying someone can’t be worn out and stopped which I think Ward may do to Dawson. Ill take Ward by decision or late round stoppage

Posted September 7, 2012 7:36 pm

Gonzo The Dragonborn

The tatts are deceiving. The first thing Ward said when he met Kessler in the flesh was he was surprised by his lack of size. He. like most people, thought he was a lot bigger than he is. Kessler is not big for the weight at all. He said he can still make 154.

Posted September 7, 2012 7:11 pm

too much analyzing…Ward is just too mentally strong for Chad & that’s all there’s to it.

Posted September 7, 2012 7:04 pm

Kessler was big for the weight… Probably a bigger super middleweight than Dawson. Dawson shouldn’t have a lot of difficulty with the weight. He’ll have a harder time with Ward, the crowd, and the officials. It’s like fighting Froch in Nottingham.

Posted September 7, 2012 6:46 pm

I know that doesn’t leave room for a draw… In this fight that won’t happen.

Posted September 7, 2012 6:43 pm

Gonzo The Dragonborn

Actually, I’d be very interested what Ward’s fighting weight is? Not once have I ever heard or seen anyone mention what weight he comes into the ring on fight night. Obviously, like most American fighters these days, he cuts a lot of weight to give him as much of an extra advantage as possible over his opponents, but I wonder exactly how much more he rehydrates to? Froch only puts on a couple of pounds after the weigh in – he was 12st 2lbs against Abraham – and Kessler isn’t big for the weight either and he probably only puts 2-3lbs on max on top of that. Ward looks like he walks around at about 14 stone and I’d hazard a guess that he must weigh at least 13 stone come fight night.

Posted September 7, 2012 6:41 pm

Chance this fight could end as a KO win for Dawson? 1% chance. A KO win for Ward due to head trauma caused by punches? 3% chance. Stoppage due to cuts or injury causing a technical decision before 12 rounds are completed? 18%. 12-round decision for Ward? 61%. 12-round decision for Dawson? 17%.

Ward got exactly what he wanted again. He always gets what he wants. Everything is always stacked heavily in his favour and yet still he tries to make out he’s a victim. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fighter with such a sense of entitlement as him. In fact, I know I haven’t.

OMG!!! Dawson looks like death warmed up. I didn’t even recognize him. I nipped into the kitchen to make myself a protein shake after the weigh in for Demarco-Molina thinking that that there was going to be an interval before Ward and Dawson cam on stage and by the time I got back Dawson was already on the scale. I had no idea it was him.. I actually thought it was some anorexic lanky beanpole welterweight who was fighting on the undercard. He looks seriously ill. I bet he probably feinted 3 or 4 times before he came on stage.

Ward by UD is the obvious prediction. Obvious because there’s no other possible result short of a technical decision due to one of Ward’s head butts opening up Dawson’s face.

Posted September 7, 2012 5:10 pm

Ward has a lot of weapons… Forearms, elbows, shoulders, head…even his fists. There is nothing spectacular about the chemistry between Scully and Dawson. They’re good together but Hunter and Ward have a stronger bond and communicate better. This is a very tough call because Dawson is a better boxer than Ward and the fight is going the distance unless there’s a bad cut, which in Ward fights can happen.. When at home, and the fight is this close, bet on the home boy every time—and that’s Ward. I’m pulling for Dawson but that’s the way it is; the fans will be cheering their asses off for Ward and that is hard for judges to shut out and remain objective …. Dawson would have to keep Ward and his bonker at long range all night while boxing and moving with massive energy like Haye did against Chisora. He has to tie Ward up inside with expert finesse. However the referee is likely to yell, “Fight out of those clinches men. Work a hand free and punch. STOP HOLDING CHAD–I DON’T WANT TO WARN YOU AGAIN—I’ll take a point.” …. CD needs to take an extra gulp of water between rounds to stay hydrated. The best thing is to take a few quick gulps within 10 seconds of the round ending to get those liquids surging into your circulartory system before the start of the next round. If Dawson does that he’ll be massively energetic and only lose 4 or 5 pounds during the fight… Of course everything would have to work out perfectly for Dawson and that’s pretty unusual in the other guys’s house. This IS Boxing.

If Chad gets a couple of clean shots on Ward, Ward will get knocked out. Chad does have Power! He stunned B-HOP a few times in the rematch and BHOP has an all time Iron chin. Ward is a great tactician but is also a very dirty fighter. Carl Froch did land more than a few clean shots on Ward!

Posted September 7, 2012 4:42 pm

Calzaghe did not beat Hopkins ‘easily’. He won a razor thin decision that could have went either way. I scored it for Hopkins. That said, I think Calzaghe would beat Ward.

Basically the same style but tweaked a little

Posted September 7, 2012 10:29 am

I agree it should have been at 175 but dawson wanted it at 168. Actually he wanted a catch weight but I Ward wanted 168 or 175. Dawson wanted his 168 belts he did not want to defend his.

Posted September 7, 2012 10:28 am

I just don’t see a Ward Ko -I can see Dawson finding a way to give up, without losing too much respect. Dawson should be honest with himself, he took this fight, because this is the only money fight around for him. If by a miracle, he wins over Ward, the smw world is open to Dawson. I am always hoping for the miracle, but the referee, the judges and the place, weighs heavily against a miracle. I totally agree with the fact that sparring and the fight, are totally different things. Ward will punish Dawson, in every dirty way, he knows.

well-reasoned and written – I agree w the conclusion

Posted September 7, 2012 10:22 am

flash knock down

Geoffrey Ciani needs to check with me before he makes a PREDICTION like this . I do like the way you wrote the story good job. Look the weight is going to be the difference in this fight . Dawson is a big light heavy weight his walking around weight is about 205 lbs and to lose 37 lbs. is just asking to much and to fight a guy like Ward in his home town is asking way to much. Dawson will be fighting for his life after the 5th round because he wont be as strong or sharp and the punches he will be getting hit with will have a major effect on him . I really don’t know if Ward will knock Dawson out or not but you did make a comment about Ward being smarter than Dawson . I don’t know how you came up with that and I don’t agree at all with it. oth fighters are smart and the one who excutes the best will have a big advantage. The first 5 rounds will be very competitive with some good exchanges between both fighters. In round six Ward will see that he is the stronger fighter and take it to Dawson backing him up going strong to the body. Dawson will be game and make one last stand but this will take all the energy Dawson has left Ward will smell blood and he will come at Dawson with everything he has. Dawson will know that Ward knows he is finished and will go out on his shield . Ward by knock out in the 9th round.

Posted September 7, 2012 9:57 am

Another nice article by Mr. Ciani. I agree with him that Ward has a better ring IQ but not that Ward is smarter or Dawson is less intelligent than Ward in any way. Dawson has the better technical boxing skills. He is a better boxer. Ward will cheat to win–yes–holding, clinching, grappling, headbutting are all fouls and Ward uses those tactics when he can and to his advantage. And in all fairness to Ward, hey–if the ref doesn’t call the fouls then they aren’t fouls, are they? Ward will need all his smarts to beat Dawson. Dawson will need all his skills to beat Ward. But, Dawson has recently beaten a boxer who has possibly the highest ring IQ of anyone in the sport today and that man is Bernard Hopkins. Dawson just beat the professor. Regardless, I believe the weight loss will negatively affect Dawson’s performance and fighting in Oakland will also work against Dawson. So, Dawson will have to fight very smart and be tecnically perfect as much as is humanly possible. I think it will be a very close fight. But for some reason, I think Ward is going to pull off the win.

Is this fight on in the uk

Posted September 7, 2012 9:52 am

Gonzo The Dragonborn

This fight is a complete farce. Firstly, Despite Chad and his trainer believes he is going to be drained at 168. He hasn’t fought at that weight for well over six years for Christ’s sake! I don’t care how good he looks or feels in the gym, this is a fight not a bloody sparring session. There’s a huge difference between the two and I think it was incredibly foolhardy of them to agree to this. And agreeing to take on Ward in Oakland was just beyond stupid, especially with them knowing in advance about Ward’s reputation as dirty fighter. They’re giving one of the dirtiest and most physical guys in the game every conceivable advantage and it’s going to greatly reduce their chances of winning. And if there’s any truth to the rumours about Dawson being knocked cold in sparring by Edison Miranda (and I’m utterly convinced there is after all the reading up I’ve done on it over the last two days), well Dawson’s chances are next to zero. He’s obviously completely dead at the weight and having to shift those extra pounds during the last week of preparation is only going to exacerbate that further. Fighting at a weight he hasn’t fought at in over six and a half years, drained to $%@#, taking on one of the dirtiest fighters in the game in their hometown, confidence shot to smithereens after being put to sleep in sparring? This does not bode well at all. Has Ward not had the odds stacked heavily in his favour enough throughout his career already? Talk about pampered.. he doesn’t want to make any concessions at all. It’s my way or the highway. Why should I have to put myself at a massive disadvantage like mortal men? Yeah, I’ll take what appears to the untrained eye to be 50/50 fight on paper, but me and my team will make damn well sure those odds will be heavily stacked in my favour before we sign on the dotted line, by hook or by crook we’ll get that W. There was no reason for him to stay at 168 at all after he sidestepped Bute.. he should’ve moved up to 175 and taken on a healthy Dawson at a weight he would’ve got major props for beating him at.

Posted September 7, 2012 9:48 am

Great article which I agree with should the fight have taken place at 175. I do believe Dawson won’t be as strong at this weight.

Posted September 7, 2012 9:12 am

Lets hope Ward doesnt borrow a book called ” The art of dirty fighting” by Bernard Hopkins this sat. Ward might use dirty tactics against Dawson. He’s starting to head butt miore often than usual.

Anyone, in shape or not in shape, who has been on a diet, to go down to a weight, they had a long time ago, knows that it takes so much power, energy and mood, away from you. So you reach your goal weight, but in a weakened fashion, nomatter what kind of diet, and training regime you use. This is Dawsons situation. I agree with those that predict Dawson to be in trouble after round 3. Ward will use these weighloss problems, all the way. Two miracle scenarios: A Dawson win + A Ward KO victory. Ward can’t punch.

The Kingslayer

Nobody looks good when they fight Hopkins.

Posted September 7, 2012 8:15 am

The only smw fighter that could defeat Ward, in Oakland, was Joe Calzaghe, in his prime. He had a lot of inner games, and beat an old Ward (Hopkins) easily. Looking at Ward fights, you do see that it is difficult to hurt Ward, his holding, and movement, allowed by Oakland referee, makes it difficult for big punchers, to get a word in. Ward constantly interrupts opponents patterns, with the help of referees. The point is, Dawson will not be allowed to hurt Ward, Calzaghe would just make it happen. Calzaghe would beat Ward clearly on points.

Posted September 7, 2012 8:14 am

Anyways, both men have balls to step into confrontation like this – Floyd and Pac have something to learn from. May the best man win!

Posted September 7, 2012 7:46 am

Ward with his spoiler tactics will frustruate Dawson into despair after rd 4. If Dawson has that magic power to stop Ward in the 1-3 rd then he’ll come on top, but as the fight goes on: headbutting, wrestling, grabbing by Ward will slowly unfocus and ultimately mentally drown Dawson, demoralize and totally destroy his rhythm. He will just try to counter after 5-6 rd. An apparent if not wide UD for Ward or maybe Ward even scores a stoppage in the late rounds if Dawson totally gives it up. If they’d only box then Dawson would outclass Ward by wide margin, but with todays boxing for success there’s a big part reserved in spoiler tactics segment of the “boxing” game and Ward’s exceptionally good at spoilers game (bot smarter and better than Hopkins IMHO at least).

Posted September 7, 2012 7:37 am

Dawson will stop Ward by TKO (between Rnd 7 & 10)

Posted September 7, 2012 7:23 am

Very nice little article. A fight of this magnitude deserve such careful consideration and unbiased analysis and I commend the author for validating exactly why he thinks the “underdog,” will win. I think the odds are just ever so slightly too much in favour of Ward for this one though and expect a close but clear decision win for him. It’ll be a fair victory, what I would REALLY like to see however is, if Ward does get the nod and it is close, is for Ward to remove any doubt by stepping up to 175 to meet Chad in a rematch. Looking forward to this nonetheless.

I predict a close ugly decision, wouldn’t be shocked if it ended up a split decision, anyway I am rollling with Andre Ward 115-113.

I will pick Andre Ward as the winner by UD or MD at worst. Chad Dawson’s only chanse to win will be by stoping Ward so if Dawson can do that I say a late round stapage by KO or TKO.

Ward is going to out class Dawson. Ward UD.
